As I understand it, there are 2 ways to save someone who's about to be sync killed: (1) by inflicting enough normal damage, or (2) by a missile.

re. missiles - I never seem to be able to get the missile out and fired in time. Is there any trick to getting it out fast, or is is just a matter of anticipating the sync.

re. normal damage - is it just damage, or is it stagger/force, or explosions? And is there any list of the type/amount of each that's needed to get them to drop their victim, on gold and platinum (if difficulty makes a difference)?

Thanks

I think you answered your own question for the most part. Only thing I can verify is if you want to be able to pull your rocket out faster, make sure you host or connected to a good host connection.

And ultimately you just have to anticipate trouble for your teammates with your rocket out until they escape sync-kill range.

Head shot a Banshee.. I have stopped a Praetorian sync with a KroSoldier's Fortification purge heavy melee.

Rocketing an abomb while they're being synched is the best. True teammates blow each other up.

Can't the biotic charge of the Krogan Vanguard also cancel out the sync kill?

There is a trick to dock in and out of cover quickly to pull out the rocket faster.

I believe they each have a force threshold beyond which they're staggered, but I don't know that for sure. A throw won't stagger a Banshee, but a Biotic Explosion will. I don't know if it's a question of damage or force, or both.

Usually you can stop Banshee or Praetorian sync-kills pretty easily, since they are quite slow. So if you see a sync coming, you can switch to a rocket normally, without the cover trick. Also you can pop a thermal pack to give you a 100% damage boost and try to shoot, but you have to do enough damage quickly, because they don't seem to break their animations in the later stages.

^ Don't forget to pop it a few times for good measure too.

Yes, UhCold made a video tutorial of this a couple years ago, it's quite effective

And OP, there are 3 things which prevent a synch

1. Missile

2. High Damage

3. Force of impact powers

The thermal pack method sounds more manageable than the cover trick, but I guess the main thing is awareness (like everything in this game). Thanks for all the advice & info

Yeah, if I see a teammate with his back turned (or, sadly, a teammate playing a Krolord) and a Banshee heading for him, I'll just pull out the rocket in anticipation of what is 99% likely going to happen.

Praetorians are easy though - they always do the melee poke-check before they pick someone up, which is my cue to break out the Cobra.

I thought it was Cain? Oh, my memory might be fuzzy.

Anyway yeah, there is a video on that on youtube for sure. Not that you'd need one to explain it: basically if you take hard cover while you're pulling out the launcher, and then you exit immediately, you'll have it out ready to fire, in a fraction of the time you'd need otherwise.

Also as mentioned, without missiles enemies stop a sync either because they received an amount of force high enough to stagger them, or because they received enough damage in a short time.

In Cyonans sheet you see at least the force needed to stagger certain enemies. Unfortunately it says nothing about the damage value.

why in the world would anybody stop a sync kill?

you are supposed to stop what you are doing and watch as your teammate dies. every time after you walk over their corpse, you shoot them in the face before you move on.

The force threshold is usually 1000 on Gold. But it won't help speccing throw for that. Bosses have a resistance after they get staggered and another throw will not stagger them while their resistance is active. I've tried a specialized build for that - throw staggers, just not when you need it.

Damage is the better and more reliable method.

I have saved teammates from sync kills by dropping an offensively specced Justicar bubble on the offending unit. This was on unprimed targets, so the stagger that comes with laying the bubble did the trick by itself. Save them pugs with style :)

The bubble does 1500 Newtons of force and all the bosses need 1500 to be staggered (Prime needs 1000 on Gold), so yes, it does work  :)

I've been dropped from sync-kills by banshees in solos more than a couple times for no obvious reason other than DoT from whatever I was using. (Incendiary ammo and inferno grenades come to mind.) Looks like she just switches to the warp-attack animation and drops her pray. Can't say if this is a glitch or something usable.

Also, speaking still as the victim of a sync-kill, if one has their Cobra out already, one can sometimes fire it when the sync animation has already begun. Not really an option to bet on, but it's been done.

Speaking as a witness, missile is the safest option, obviously. But yes, for best results do equip it in advance when you see the danger.

Shooting with the Cobra during a sync-kill only works if you were recovering from a downed state and she grabbed you as you were standing up. The problem here is: The aiming reticle or crosshair needs to be on the Banshee when firing. If you shoot when the crosshair is not on the Banshee, you'll miss and since the camera tilts upward during the sync-kill animation you will shoot up into the sky.

Yes, if the damage is enough, she drops you. It works particularly well with Flamer. Basically, if you have flamed the Banshee for around 2s, you're immune to her sync. I would not recommend to be grabbed as it is rarely a good idea, put keeping that in mind can allow a more agressive strategy sometimes.

It also works with Inferno grenades, Dark Channel, Reave, but it's probably more character, build and gear dependant for those powers.

Nah, Uh Cold made the video. There was an original quick swap guide here though:

Last night ran into an amazingly horrible Fury player who died at least 3 times each wave.  15 Revive Medal by wave 7.. I Had enough.   Brought a Praetorian to them, dropped it off on their head. I was so happy to see that Fury get eaten like a Pop-Tart.
