Maybe a stupid question but how do you do it? Without computers and stuff I have no idea how Dorian/Leliana/Inky could pull it off.

Against Cullen? I don't know about Leliana, but when Dorian cheats, he ends up losing. Same thing with your character. You only win if you chose the option to play fair.

They could distract Cullen and move some pieces around, either taking them off the table, switch some pieces around or nudge them to a nearby square. Then there is taunting, making Cullen loose focus via flirting, teasing or goading. Then there is something called false moves, which you move your piece without obeying the rules. They could pretend that it's their turn to move, even if they already moved their pieces. They could nudge a piece while moving another piece, as in their elbow might bump into a pawn, shifting it a few squares to the left or right. Or they might knock over a piece with their chest while moving a piece further on the board, make a note of it and when they raise the knocked piece they shift it by a few squires. Cullen might even let them get away with it, for the extra challenge.

Since they are playing hexagon chess there are more moves to make and harder to track the individual pieces, if Leli/Dorian/Inky don't know that Cullen is an experienced chess player they might think he wouldn't be as aware of foul play, or simply think that Cullen can't keep up with both the chess, cheating and the banter all at once.

Dorian might challenge Cullen to a Tevinter style of  chess, making up some rules in Dorians favour. Leliana has the sleight of hand ability from DAO, so she could pocket some pieces with ease. Inky has a gate to the fade in their palm, just open the tiniest of rifts to swallow some of the pesky pieces.

There are probably many other ways to cheat, which require more creative thinking. After all, you can cheat in pretty much everything if you put your mind into it. (But you can always be caught as well, so try to behave.)

The funny thing is that the Inquisitor and Leliana use the same cheats according to Cullen. It would be interesting to see them against each other. Mirror match! :D

I cheated once and still won. Then I felt guilty, reloaded and played fair... won anyway.

Weird. Could your cunning attribute determine it?

You move pieces when the other player isn't looking.

Unlikely, I played as a mage.

I wonder if flirting with him makes him let you cheat? I always flirt with him. And I've never lost a match.

If you play fair you always win. I don't know about when you cheat though. An interesting option is to let him win. The way he looks at you after the game leads me to think he knows you let him win, but he doesn't call you out on it.

Yep, it's flirting (just like the only way to win Wicked Grace is to be romancing Josephine).  Apparently, the advisors let you get away with all sorts of things if your romancing them...

As for cheating at chess, in my experience after some middle school chess club, people generally did it by trying to distract their opponent by talking and then quickly moving a pawn to a different location (usually to open up space for an attack in two turns- moving a pawn and then attacking in that turn will likely cause the person to realize what you did, as they wouldn't have left one of their other pieces undefended).  Occasionally people would try 'accidently' knocking over a piece, doing a 'whoops', and then setting it back up a space away from where it was.  A good chess player has the whole board in their mind, and thus this fails, but for middle school kids, it worked for a time- and for a casual match (especially if your flirting with the easily flustered guy you're playing against!), it may also work.

I've played around with it and always won unless I let him. He's no fool. Lol

It's like if you romance Josie. She'll let you win at Wicked Grace as Mikka said here. ^

It would have been rather interesting (hardly significant, granted), if by choosing "play fair" it would look at your cunning score. If it was over a set number, your IQ would win, if it was under, then RNG would simply be the factor...you might win, you might lose.

I'm sure it wasn't worth the resource zots for it, but it might have been a fun little feature. ;)

When my Lavellan was with Solas, I would sometimes use the heart option when comforting Cullen. They ended up having a nice, close friendship that could have been more in another life. It was really sweet. Sometimes the heart options are good for developing a warmer friendship without it leading to more.

I know, I did the same with my other Lavellan who was with Blackwall at the time (then, after he left her naked in the barn, she broke up with him, went to Cullen and never looked back -_- * Anyway, what I mean is yes, those flirts are really sweet  But this time I roleplay a Lavellan who doesn't flirt with anybody. At all. She just doesn't know how  Except for Solas (LI), I guess, but even with Solas, I missed half of his flirts on purpose because of that. And I really like the way her character is developing, too, but, alas, this means no hearts for Cullen... however strong the temptation may be :pinched:

Like in his throwing lyrium around scene. The heart choice in there might be my favorite in the whole game... damn

I always use the heart for that one, and when you check on him afterward and he asks if you're alright too. It makes sense to say "I care about you" even as a friend. I see no reason it should be just for flirting. My Lavellan was very loving to everyone in her group. I wish they could add an option so we could really bond with the ones we don't flirt with, but still speak to them in sweet ways.

I find it weird that playing fair always has the inquisitor win, especially the elven Inq likely hasn't played before considering they're Dalish

That little smirk she gives at the end leads me to believe he let her win.
