I'm probably wrong, but I got a hint of Firefly from the ME:A trailer and the speculation that ME:A may be aiming at being more of a space western than a military based space opera. If so, this is pretty intriguing to me for numerous reasons.
- I think there is more than enough story potential available in the setting of a rogue freelancer/outlaw operating on the fringes of Andromeda societies to re-invigorate the franchise. Having the main character cast as some military officer would bring inevitable comparisons with Shepard and the previous trilogy, and show a lack of imagination in Bioware to recover old ground.
- I think that leaving formalized military setting would lend to a more dynamic crew environment that is not restricted by the inherent hierarchy of a military chain of command and offers potential for conflicting opinions and objectives within the crew that inform the story line or side quests
- Also having the hero inhabit a more mundane role could set up that threats and challenges derive from more mundane antagonists. I sincerely hope we don't see a form of Reaper 2.0 type of threat underpinning the ME:A and that the main story avoids being another Power fantasy with a central Mary Sue that the Galaxy revolves around. Galaxy's revolve around super massive black holes and that is what Shepard became for me in the longer term.
- Having a more mundane setting would be better served with a more mundane vessel. Having a Millenium Falcon/Serenity type vessel rather than another Normandy lends a different character to the ship. Leaving the slick design aesthetic for a more grubby and lived in type of thing and making the process of maintaining and upgrading the ship play more of a role in story or side quests
- Enabling more diverse character building options; possibly the chance to become a "robber Baron" type of character that carves up the New Frontier for their own ends.
Does anyone else feel intrigued?
