If Shinobi0602 is correct, The FB3 engine generates the planet terrain en masse , followed by the artists customizing them individually. Perhaps, for the purpose of each quest, treasure hunt, lost tech, rare resources, the alien "home worlds", pirate enclaves and so forth.
This is all goodness. However, I'm wondering if Bio continued smoothing the mechanics of orbital scanning for resources, life emanations, mineral resources or energy signatures. This is followed by landing a shuttle with the Mako inside doing the actual surveying / exploration of the target site. I prefer this cinematic rather than the ME1 one, where the Mako was dropped from the air.
Do we Need the Mako?
ME2 showed us that the landing shuttle can drop us off right next to the site. Why the Mako then? Put another way, the Mako appears to be limited in use and is not needed on every planet. Do we need it for establishing an Outpost or Mining base for the purpose of a detail survey? Or maybe for those volcanic planets that spew lava and rock into the air and the squad needs protection?
What do you think?

The right tool for the right job. Shuttles do a good job of getting you where you need to go, but if someone shoots at you, you crash and possibly explode. If there's a chance of my vehicle getting shot, I'd rather have a vehicle that can flatten the person shooting.
