Like the Asari, judging from his post only without the need for a female partner. Or for an all-male race, it could be like male seahorses. They are the gender for that species that gives birth, so the BW team could figure out something along those lines. <shrug> Like the old show Alien Nation.
Or they could reproduce asexually (like by mitosis or something like that) but still enjoy pleasures like food and sex. It's an interesting idea for sure.
The only issue with asexual reproduction (specifically mitosis) is that it leads to two identical cells. So if a humanoid reproduced asexually, their offspring would be (more or less barring random mutations) identical to the parent. So, in theory, this species could/would be identical male individuals, at least genetically. Obviously, personality is mostly formed environmentally, so they could think and act differently but mostly look identical.
I mean along the lines of giving birth, without female reproductive organs
.
I think sea horses just carry the eggs with them, it's still the females that produce the eggs. Mitosis is an option, but IMO that would be more for an asexual species. Not that I'm against an all male species, just that biologically it doesn't seem possible. What we consider male is specifically something with male sex organs, which are not capable of birthing children. If it's a male species but it has a womb, I would consider the species hermaphroditic rather than pure male.
Correct about seahorses. The males only carry the fertilized eggs.
Something akin to mitosis, the body start to divide into another body, or throw it up or something, these are aliens, so there are different ways that may seem unconventional. The Namekian from Dragon Ball reproduce asexually, and they are all purely male race. As I said, in a pseudofiction world, so something like a mixing of DNA through touching or something like with the asari or some kind of way of attaining DNA from their partner would be possible. Maybe their gene is more prone to mutations and changes which would produce variation in appearance and physiology.
This is true. I guess the beauty of science fiction is that it allows you to stretch what we already know about science. I'm sure that they could come up with something. Because, let's face it, psychic asexual reproduction isn't necessarily scientifically sound but we all accepted it for the asari.
Here's an idea, and forgive me if this sounds weird. Okay, weird even for me.
What if there was a race that was all male, but who could change gender if needed for population? Like some types of frogs that are capable of doing that. However, it doesn't mean that all males do, and it could still be quite possible to have an Asari-like race of all/mostly males. There still is plenty of room for gay characters, and it could blend just enough of the science fantasy of the ME series with some real world science.
...I just blinked and realized I was having this conversation with a straight face. I think I need coffee.
I could roll with that.
Yeah, this is interesting. There are a lot of frogs and fish that do this, so there's scientific precedent. I just hope that they wouldn't go the shape-shifter route. Because I could easily see that happening. Plus, just imagine how many trolls posters on the boards would complain about that. "He doesn't count because he's not a real guy." I can already see the complaints......
Problem with it is......hot blue all male dudes don't sell as much as hot blue chicks.
True. Which is why the asari exist in the first place. And the species where we only see males at first (turian, krogan, salarian) weren't 'sexy'.
