I've played a keeper without barrier before.  It's pretty fun.

So I dunno. Were these guys being unwarranted jerks, or should I stop playing Perilous? Feeling kinda afraid to show my face around that difficulty despite all my prior Perilous wins. ;/ Were all the groups I played and did well with probably disparaging me for my (mostly) lack of Barrier and just had the good grace to not boot me? I definitely don't want to be the weak link or seem like I'm not a team player.

being unwarranted jerks is my opinion, you guys were already way into the run.

It's your game experience that matters the most. If you enjoy your class with a specific build that doesn't include what is considered a mandatory skill, by all means go ahead.

Some pugs are just relentless when kicking someone. Unfortunately they don't realize they're denying someone the experience they're entitled to. Even the less experienced and geared players (not saying that you are, btw ;) )at lvl 15 or higher should be able to attempt perilous. What makes it even worse you got kicked while - from what I can tell based on your OP - things went pretty smooth.

My advice to you is to forget about these people and write them down on your blacklist. Please DO NOT stop playing perilous because they were harsh (and very wrong) in their judgment. As Gya said previously:

Some people need to learn to cope without barrier. If they're playing in PuGs, they need to deal with it. If they can't deal with it, they need to get out of perilous. You should keep playing whichever way you enjoy.

you should not stop playing perilous because you got kicked(not stay heartbroken so easy ;) ), another thing you should not enter pug to be a barrier monkey  , if you can take care of himself without barrier -_- , fk hell is a pug does not last forever  , you will not fail to make friends because you not using barrier and possibly if you make friends will be more mature people in the game and that  don't care to mediocre things, to the point that not kick you just because won't use barrier   ;)

Nah, you didn't have it coming, people need to be able to play without a barrier caster babysitting them constantly.

I personally prefer to play the elementalist with barrier because a lot of players suck and it's easier to finish the game if they have some barrier on every now and then. But I would never kick a player for not wanting to play that way. I've played with offensive virtuosos that didn't cast much barrier and was ok with it.

I quote this because I had a similar experience this weekend where I was doing a perilous PUG and I was playing offensive virtuoso. We played one match and it went pretty well, I topped the board by about a 100% over the guy at #2. People went down a few times when things got hairy but I killed everything and raised them back up. They made some little nasty comments about my playing. We went into the second match (Tevinter ruins) and right up the stairs by the first treasure door, everyone went down except for me and a Katari. We managed to kill the first group and one of the guys said something like "I need to play virtuoso next round and nobody will go down". I shrugged it off because I'm thinking "I didn't go down... you did. It's not my job to keep you alive." The assassin could not be rezed in time and he went into the fade and just dropped out of the party. I don't blame him. We went on and got to that long rectangular room in zone 2 and the Katari went down again and they said something like "you should never play virtuoso again". I just gave up. I quit out and hit a random with just me and the assassin that dropped out of the last game. We 2 manned our way to zone 4 of Elven ruins.

No one should be totally relying on a barrier caster to save their rump most of the time unless in lobby a team is set up that way.  I can't imagine not using barrier for a keeper due to the number of barrier related passives but they are still more than viable with no barrier, they still have one of the very best abilities in the game with static cage.

Sooo....other characters are just fine to be built only about themselves, but Elementalist has public duty to take barrier(Keeper too, I guess?), huh?

The same old "you are not good enough for us" mentality. It never dies.

And Firestorm. Don't forget Firestorm.

People kick for the most idiotic reasons.  I don't even mind if people are afk... the only time I feel like kicking (but don't anyways), is when a player spams "Come here friends" at the gong.  wtf?  This is just beyond rude.

Finding other players in public games is so rare today, I'd never kick someone lol. I drag randoms for free carries, I'm that lonely.

Don't need it. I have my build with stone fist, on big mobs, if i got into a good position, no one can touch me. even on perilous.

Firstly, those guys were idiots asses, and they did you a favor by getting you out of there.

Secondly, xp + survival reward wise, barrier is too invaluable to avoid taking on the Elementalist on Perilous. There are other abilities you need before barrier, Firewall, then Death Siphon and Firestorm, in order to control the battlefield. Fire Mine optional but recommended most of the time, but you should have barrier by level 13-16.

I've done barrier less builds on Keeper and Ele, but the XP is too good given they aren't burst kill everything kits. Virtuoso is OP kill everything almost instantly, but Ele / Keeper is not.

In fact Barrier is part of Ele's burst damage due to Chaotic Focus passive, consuming barrier to boost fire mine damage to absurd levels-- instagibbing every non-elite enemy / non fire resistent enemy for 4-5k (no resists) to 9-10k (fire vulnerable).

Sorry for the late reply; the day after I posted this thread, I had to go up and housesit till yesterday at my aunt and uncle's house/horse boarding place, where the internet is terrible ;P

Thanks for the support, guys, it means a lot ;3; I'll keep trying Perilous with the characters I feel confident with (mostly just my Elementalist), and hope I don't get booted much in the future (and also hope that blocking the guys who kicked me doesn't make it even harder to find decent Perilous matches). I appreciate the build advice too- I'm sure there are better builds than the one I use, which use an earlier Barrier and Firestorm, the one I use is just what I'm most effective with personally- a stronger build will do little for me if I'm flailing about never knowing what to use when. (and as noted, I DO get Barrier before I hit 20, it's just pretty much the last thing I get- I very much like having it, mind you, I just like having other things even more ;P)

I may have to try Fire Mine sometime, though, perhaps in place of my workhorse Wall of Fire! I've heard good things about it.

Lately, I have specced out of barrier for Ele because the group that I occasionally get to run with has no need for barrier. I instead go with WG/FW/Immo/SF to set up team combos and FW for CC. The xp generation seems to make up for not having barrier and everything is burned down fast enough that I don't miss the extra survivability.

In most private matches, barrier seems like a waste but in pugs... fuggeddabowdit!

Would I ever kick someone for not having barrier in a PUG? No, because I'm not their dad, nor am I the boss of them. If they proved to be terrible and don't contribute, then I might just leave the lobby next game and find another.

I have this guy called dragon250fr who doesn't like me and another frenchie called Pepsi with the same problem

So I end up in his game where he is a very bad lvl 12 arcane and I'm a decently leveled ele trying to save his sad ass.

He's on his mike trying to convince everyone to kick me (these other people are dead mind you)

So I rush into a big group, I die, he dies and I get the exp

That felt good
