So how exactly did they get this "ark" to the edge of the galaxy and beyond, in under a year if FTL travel would take multiple decades to reach the edge of the galaxy, assuming they did it at a system that boardered the edge of the milky way? If you started at a place like Earth, it'd take 500,000 years to make the trip. And that's being generous.

 

And if we're not playing as the descendants, then this is going to be a very boring game. Cause there's gonna be nothing in the galaxy for us to find. This isn't fallout and it shouldn't become fallout. There needs to be places with people for us to go to and interact with. Not just 1 colony with a bunch of frozen people on it. Also, that's a nice theory you came up with, but it still doesn't answer the technology issue.

 

In the trailer we see someone make a jump to a planet in seconds that's in an entirely different star system. That shouldn't be possible to do unless they've created a means of travelling Faster then the current FTL technology.

 

How the **** would they do that if they're shoved in a flying vault, all frozen?

 

Was it a year? I don't remember where they give a time line other than that the time and space was different from shepard's story.

 

As for "nothing to find"? I don't get that.

 

You are commanding or in the command structure of a colonization effort. Once you land in a suitable planet, you start your colony then scout the surroundings for additional resources and possible allies/enemies. If you do find another suitable world, you plant another colony there (with your cryo colonists) and so forth. Sooner or later you will run into the any space faring natives. There is everything to find.

 

Also once they are in an actual system and not intergalactic space, normal FTL works because you have a planet to discharge so there is no need to create a new FTL tech. You simply wake up your engineers and start building scout ships out of your main ark ship (though a smarter way would have had one or two small scout ships already built or in a disassembled form).

 

The main problem will occur when you run out of cryosleep colonists and need natural reproduction. Then we run into a time lag issue but that can also be handled in several ways including adding in local indigneous populations

That's some nice structures they got there for being made of salvaged material. I didn't know they brought road-building tech with them.

This isn't mass effect. This sounds more like a clone of that Mobile game Fallout Shelter. I play mass effect for the action RPG, not to play a goddamn civ simulator.

ME1. You run around riding that mako and explore mineral sites and other relics after which you plant a flag. So was that mass effect? 

ME3, you run around scanning planets for mission locations. Then you plant a beacon. Was that mass effect?

 

Obviously you're looking in the wrong place for mass effect since ME1 and ME3 are "civ simulators"

You're obviously playing the wrong game if you think Mako Riding, War Assets, and Planet Probing was what made the Mass Effect games, and what most players took away from it. Not saving the galaxy in an over-the-top action movie popcorn flick fashion, or meeting new characters and getting to know them. No, those were just meaningless.

That would be a really cool tie-in IMO. If the Ark theory is correct, I'd actually love to start the game on the Ark when it reaches Andromeda. The reveal could be really cool way to introduce the new galaxy / cluster we're about to conquer colonize inhabit.

If there is an ark (or colony ship), it was definitely launch after the reaper-war. The trailer featured technology (Mako, body armor) that is years ahead of what we've seen in the trilogy. Besides, there wasn't enough time to build an ark-like ship. Nobody took the reaper-threat seriously in ME1/2 and all available resources were assigned to the defense of the homeworlds and the construction of the Crucible during the war.

I believe six months was mentioned specifically, but I haven't been able to play ME3 for years so maybe I confused that and the time between ME2 and ME3 which is established as six months. The point is however that it was less than a year definitely so less time than they had with the Thanix cannon, and that's not counting all the best minds being on the Crucible Project.

 

No, I'm operating under the fact that in Mass Effect 3 Bioware tells us that the top minds of our galaxy didn't have a clue how Reaper drives work by the time the Reapers showed up. Apparently Sovereign's wreckage wasn't any big help in regards to Reaper drives. Makes sense since in ME1 we see it go boom. 

 

All the Batarians who worked on the Leviathan of Dis project were indoctrinated. They served as Reaper agents and sabotaged Khar'Shan's defenses and fired on Batarian ships. Balak tells us this. 

 

For stars in galaxies, yes planets are a likely occurrence after a time. However stars in the void of dark space are a different matter. They get there because somehow they were thrown out of their galaxy, meaning their planets were likely shredded off of them due to the forces involved. 

 

The best minds in the galaxy don't know how Reaper drives work at the time Reapers show up, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't a problem they working on prior to their arrival. Sovereign was blasted into a million bits, so it is possible that there will still gaps in the understanding of how Reaper propulsion works, even if was already being studied. That would also be in line with the creation of Thanix weapons, which while an improvement on what the Council races fielded previously, were still greatly inferior to Reaper weaponry. The galaxy may not have had to start from scratch on replicating Reaper propulsion in ME3, but merely fill in the knowledge gaps on a project that had been in the works for three years.

However there is at least one, and possibly two, Batarians who were not indoctrinated and both knew about the Leviathan of Dis project and its consequences. Balak definitely mentions it if still alive in ME3, and if I remember correctly his replacement does as well if Balak was killed in Bring Down the Sky. I could be wrong on his replacement, but Balak I'm sure of.

 

With the complete collapse of the Batarian hegemony it is possible that more Batarian military or government officials than Balak (or his replacement) might have discovered details of the Leviathan of Dis project, and brought previously classified information on it, such as scans or details on Reaper naval architecure, with them when they fled into Council space. This would be decades worth of information on an intact Reaper delivered to the Council. I actually hope Bioware goes that route, as it would also give the Batarians something heroic to do for once, deviating from their usual role as mustache twirling villains.

 

As for intergalactic stars not having orbiting planets, that is incorrect. Some may have lost planets when ejected but not necessarily all, or even the majority. Most of these stars would not look different than stars found within galaxies. The only difference is that they are no longer within a galaxy.

We know nothing about how we got to Andromeda, so stop expecting to receive the right answer.

We will know when they will tell us. All this arguing about "No this is stupid, I'm right" "No you're not, I am!" is pointless.

"Reverse engineering" in science-fiction is typically space magic. It works at the speed of the plot, and trying to come up with a semi-coherent justification for what will get the Council races from A to B (if that's the way Bioware chooses to go) is a lost cause. IRL, even reverse engineering what (by sci-fi standards) amounts to effectively completely known technology that just involves a few technical innovations can take months, depending on the complexity. The example here, again, is Damascus Steel.

EDI had a habit of collecting and sharing reaper intel with other allied species (we find her mobile platform in the AI core at one point in ME3, uploading reaper intel to the turians). While Legion / geth VI is onboard, EDI discreetly makes inquiries, and having been in the reaper-mind and still able to share data with other geth still under reaper control, Legion complies.

So - Legion / geth VI feeds EDI massive amounts of reaper tech data that she processes to find reaper weaknesses, while also uploading it to other allied species.

Tech gaps filled.

EDI had a habit of collecting and sharing reaper intel with other allied species (we find her mobile platform in the AI core at one point in ME3, uploading reaper intel to the turians). While Legion / geth VI is onboard, EDI discreetly makes inquiries, and having been in the reaper-mind and still able to share data with other geth still under reaper control, Legion complies.

So - Legion / geth VI feeds EDI massive amounts of reaper tech data that she processes to find reaper weaknesses, while also uploading it to other allied species.

Tech gaps filled.

Is the Geth VI on friendly terms with EDI? I know he doesn't trust organics very much, so wouldn't share it directly with us.

Given how far out of the loop the Asari Councilor was regarding the archive, this project might have been started when the reapers first invaded, or maybe this was a Plan B they were working on in secret since the Battle of the Citadel.

Not sure it will be quite that long. But I get the impression it will be at least a couple of hundred years after they arrive.

 

That would answer questions about somewhat evolved technology. Allow a few towns to be established along with a small industrial base. But they still want to have a frontier feel to it so they can't make it 2000 years.

No. If it takes place hundreds or thousands of years after we first arrive, we would be in more of Andromeda than a single cluster with most of that cluster still unexplored, even if it is a huge cluster.

There would be no way that such a project can be kept secret for long given the logistics of it, the shadow broker, STG and cerberus would learn of its existence eventually. It also raises the question of why the council took the defeatist approach and decided to flee the galaxy instead of trying to find a way to stop the reapers especially with something like the prothean beacon containing information of the crucible.
