I'm no expert, but the previous iteration of Frostbite rendered brown skin just fine. In Battlefield 3, the US assault soldier was a man of color. Now I am in no position to judge how well it was done, but it looked good to me.

I'm not minimizing what's happening in the Middle East-I'm talking about what's going on in America because I'm from America and I'm Gay and I've experienced homophobia here. I know LGBT people that have been murdered for being who they are so I'm saying that homophobia is a problem here in America, the country that a lot of people like to call "the land of the free", as well.

I said you're minimizing it, not dismissing it. Now who's putting words in whose mouth? You're equating what goes on in the US with what goes on in the MIddle East and there is simply no comparison. It's not just homophobia; that could be anything that a gay person feels offends them or a way to escape dealing with something. There are State sponsored executions.

 

Again, while you're right that we can't know the exact number, there's no way it amounts to a significant percentage. Get over it.

Because it was shifted from being about the CC to being about representation in promotional material, with the other nonsense being added in. Sorry to assist in the derail because there was nothing wrong with your initial question.

Anyway, what do you mean by my "first world problems"..? Homophobia is a *worldwide* problem-it's something that happens in first world countries as well as third world countries. Don't try to teach me about what homophobia is. I've experienced it and as I said, I know people that have died because of homophobia so I know more about it than you do.

 

You literally just brought that up out of nowhere. You keep saying this and you can keep saying it as much as you want but that doesn't make it true. I'll explain this to you, again. There is no way to say how many LGBT people there are in the world. LGBT people are oppressed and ashamed of who they are because of homophobia and transphobia so a lot of LGBT people identify as straight/cis, so saying there's more straight people is just an assumption and nothing more.

Except that he was white in the beta, and the change wasn't carried over for the first person perspective so your arms were still white even in the final game.

Fallout 4 - You can create a male or female of any skin color.

Dishonored 2 - You play as either white male or as a white female.

Mass Effect: Andromeda - You can create a male or female of any skin color.

Star Wars: Battlefront - Edited: You can play as either male or female. 

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - You play as a white male.

Assassin's Creed: Syndicate - You play as a white male and white female.

Batman: Arkham Knight - You play as white male.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 - Edited: Apparently you can play as either male or female of any ethnicity

Dark Souls 3 - You can create a male or female of any skin color.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - You play as white male. Edited: And as any rescued character, male or female.

Horizon: Zero Dawn - You play as a female.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - You play as a white female.

XCOM 2 - You can presumably recruit a variety of soldiers of different genders and skin colors.

The Last Guardian - The play as an asian boy.

The Division - You can create a male or a female as far as I know, presumably of any ethnicity.

For Honor - Not sure - probably male only, judging by a trailer, but not necessarily white - for the sake of the discussion, let's count it as white male.

 

Edited: Out of 16 biggest games of this year's E3, you play a white male only in 3 of them. That's 13%, not 99%. That's much less than a quarter of all major AAA releases.

So yeah, your argument is simply untrue.

I just finished playing AC Rogue and both Adewale and Achilles (two black characters) had white hands.  lol!! I doubt it's a bug, it seems more of a result of them using one model and throwing everybody's head on it.

Likely. In the BF3 video I linked above it was due to all the classes in one faction using the same first person model despite obviously different garb for each of them. The white arms on the black medic was the most egriegious example, but you can also see that the 3rd person character model has long sleeves that entirely cover the skin on the arms anyway.

That's bizarre. Adewale's model in AC4 had no problems like that.

You can easily create a non-white protagonist, you just have to be competent and patient.

Easily? I dunno. But you could create a different ethnicity, true. In the previous games I was able to make a near perfect Faran Tahir (Star Trek 2009's Captain Robau).

Would still like to see more complexions and hair types moving forward however.

Yes, you make Shepard be whoever you want to be but WHY didn't Bioware show that? Why did they only show one Shepard-the straight white male Shepard in all of the promo?

USian answer: They get mad because they're usually libertarian/republican dude bros who think Fox News is journalism and that the representation of the white, cis male straight protagonist in 95% of video games isn't political, but "social justice warriors" asking for more and better representation is "OMG, dudebros everywhere are under attack! P Ceeeeeeeeee! Stop pushing your agenda on meeeeee! Waaaahhhhhhh!" They operate under magical thinking--playable characters that represent them are "normal" and the default....anything else is "political correctness" run amok, the agenda of destroying all. white. males. They're full of it and they don't even know it. Also, they tend to say things such as "Anita Sarkeesiannnnnnnnnn!", "____________ agenda" and "gamer gate is about ethics in journalism" (that last one is particularly snort-inducing).

Um, I'm libertarian and no, that's not a common belief among the men that are in that party.  My husband is apart of the same political party, so please don't go there.  In fact, please don't go there with politics in general.  This is not only an unfair blanket statement to make about both political parties, but conversations about RL politics get removed.

 

As far the rest, I can see where you're coming from.  I completely do, to a large degree. I've been posting in threads asking for more diverse representation for over 3 years on various BioWare forums.  I even started an email campaign over representation once apon a time.

 

However, this is incredibly hostile.  I'm not saying one side is better than the other, but someone has to be the more reasonable here.  Flinging insults back and forth, whether you are a "SJW" or a "dudebro" (two phrases I loathe in the same sentence) is never going to lead anywhere productive.  It only leads to this circular fight and division among game fans on the BSN (and elsewhere) that's been extremely toxic.

 

My suggestion is to remain calm and cool and try to put the worst of those folks on ignore.  There is some folks you just can't reason with.  The more you argue your point, and the more passionately you do it, the more the other person is going to be convinced they are right.  It does matter which "side" of this debate you take.  

 

It's not right for a few loud men to lash out at anyone that wants social change.  It's also not right to lash out at "dudebros" that have a problem with this.  Two wrongs don't make a right.  Besides, many of these "dudebros" have varying reasons, and not all of them are as extreme as the examples you've posted.

Speaking as a white guy with a dark stubble and short hair, I think it's only fair gaming make the incremental step and lengthen the protagonists hair.
