I just found this. And they made me happy.

Its not SJW to want more diversity. There's no such thing as forced diversity. Diversity have always existed within the gaming demographic. Bioware have been working at this for years even before these social movements gain its traction. Mass Effect have its own diverse human NPCs; South African, European, Middle Eastern, East Asian, South Asian, Latin American. They did Jade Empire, despite my conflicting feelings about it, which do have realistic East Asian looks (even more so than a lot of Asian RPGs). Its a nonissue to demand more when they're already heading toward that.

CCs do allow inclusion from everyone who wish to create their own version of their character and enhanced CCs experience for the protagonist will affect the gaming environment especially with background NPCs. For a story-driven RPGs, details like these is what made the game immersive with high replay values for SPs.

Not trying to sound like an SJW here, but BioWare should just do their best in having a character creator with the ability to create a good-looking character, regardless of race. Afros, dreadlocks, hair sticks can be cool.

BioWare should just do what they can.

There's nothing wrong with being a Social Justice Warrior. Don't let them fool you. Especially, when you look around this world and see so much friggin madness. How could you not be SJW? I see the term being used as a slur to undermine and disrespect. Then I look up and see people being murdered in their church for what they look like. I see gay people in Russia being snatched off the street. Kept and tortured while being video taped.

I am disgusted by it all.

There is some very real shyte going on all over this world that must be pushed back against. And yes it does filter down into things like video games because we are a part of this world. We are a part of what's going on.

I mean, yeah, I think people just get tired hearing about it all the time. Hell, I get tired of hearing about it. It can be too much, and you just want to get away from it all.

And there are things that some people feel are a big deal, that I don't understand, or think is a big deal. There are issues I never even knew about before, but I would not look to demean those with such concerns.

Ack, whatever. I was actually just gonna post some good old fashioned West Side Story gifs:

this is the so called gamergate:

tumblr_luesoclg0B1qz6f9yo1_r3_500.gif

and this is the so called sjw's:

tumblr_lt9jehwgLI1r317bvo1_400.gif

........

Anyway, that said, I think you're right. And really I think DAI did a great job of allowing players to make a variety PC's. The skin tones were nice, and the hair textures were good. Although the hair selections and overall quality were...meh.

ME, though, has always been good with natural looking darker skin tones.

The people who are derogatorily called SJWs aren't complaining about those things. They probably don't even know they happen. They are far too busy being offended by everything.

Easy, because SJWs live in their own insane universes:

Unfortunately, those universes bleed out into real life:

and this is the so called sjw's:

Actually, they (as in AGGers) suffered a major blow at this year's E3 due to their infamous talking heads being clueless hypocrites. Yay I guess?

That is an awesome pic, but you do realize those are RL models from a photography studio and not characters from the Creator, right?!  ^_^

I would be so happy if I could make characters that authentic in either the MEA or the DAI creator!!!

You guys are doing the same thing, though.  Being offended by everything. Living in your own insane worlds. And I say "You" in general. I'm not sure about you all specifically.

But I've seen...Idk what they are..Gamergates? I've seen them freak out. I've seen them respond to even reasonable suggestions with a vitriol that seems disproportionate. While throwing the term SJW at them. Or feminazhi's and all that bullshyte.

And I've seen the "sjw's" ....get, uh, over the top.

It's disappointing all the way around. I thought we had things more sorted than this now.

And while I understand what the so called sjw's are pushing for, although I don't always agree with what they want, nor certain methodologies they employ. It's clear what they're talking about.

What I don't understand is what the people that are frustrated and angry with sjw's want.

I haven't had any trouble making other races. Three black Shepards, two male and a female, as well as a male with Japanese ancestors. I have a few presets I build from. Also, there are Asian eyes in Mass Effect...not all asian eyes look like the ones people typically think of (which the ME asian eyes are), but they are there.

Just take your time and mess with the cheekbones, jaw line, and brow height...just take your time is all.

Pics and face settings if you please. or it never happened!  ^_^

I've made a few "Asian-esque" faces, but never something that could stand up well in my opinion as to how an East Asian face (as opposed to Pac-Islander) really looks.  I have never been happy with the faces I made, not 100% anyhow.  The closest actually came when I made my Hawke in DAI, and she somehow ended up being closer to my Asian family features than my Inkie did, which made me cry.

There were some very good looking Asian Shep's in this thread. I didn't know it could be done.

edit: i've tried. and you know that moment when you finally get to see your Shep. you lean in close as the cam is about to swing around to Shep's face and then....

KOTOR is an older game and not as visually impressive as Mass Effect, but its CC was better in that regard.

Lol, no, they're cosplayers who made their own costumes, the photography watermark is just to show they pics were professionally taken. In fact, the guy is friends with a lot of my friends who were cosplayers themselves.

And it is really possible to recreate Bya's Shepard with her looks via CC (even her hair was styled right) and she actually made a Black Widow.

Except that people are labeled SJWs for talking about anything even mildly related to gender/race/orientation. You want the female PC to show up in a trailer ? SJW. You want dreadlocks in the character creator ? SJW. You want more than one gay option ? SJW. Now people feel the need to preface everything they post by saying "I'm not a SJW" (like the guy asking people what gender they were gonna pick for their MEA character).

It's kinda lost its meaning.

I think my Shepard looks japanese. Though someone here said he looks more Native American ^^ Well at least he's non-white character.

In other hand although DAI's CC is most vast from what BW has I find it hard to create East Asian looking characters with it. Haven't manage to do that yet.

Well, you had a choice of half a dozen different presets for each gender. There wasn't really any character creation involved beyond that and picking a name. I thought it was enough for that game though.

I used the default preset for all my male Sheps and that worked just fine for me.

Well when I see it happen it's usually because it's not "It would be cool to see a female Shepard trailer also", but is instead "I'm sick of seeing men". The former just wants to add, but the latter wants to replace with their preferred whatever and is more annoying.

Edited to make it less absolute.

Maybe you're not looking in the right places. I mean take a look at this thread: the OP, a white woman, asks for more options to make non-white characters easier to do in the CC, doesn't say anything about being sick of white people, and you've still got someone on the first page bemoaning the need to be politically correct. What she asked for is no different from all the other threads asking for more hair options, or asking for tattoos, but she's the only one accused of trying to be PC.

My preference is that either they show off as much variety as possible by having a different protagonist in each trailer (thus showing off the CC) or have two (one male one female) "faceless" ones (much like the single promo image we have) to show that both sexes are playable but not implying there is a "correct" face.

However, if, they were to chose one single design and use it the way they used Sheploo, then I would, out of boredom, prefer it wasn't a white male dudebro. And likewise, if they chose two premade designs, I'd prefer they weren't a white male dudebro and a white redhaired female. Not because there's anything inherently wrong with those things, but because they've been done before, and variety is, as they say, the spice of life.

And while there are a few people that might go further, I certainly get the impression that the vast majority of those who say they want something other than a white male "default" protagonist hold a similar position to this.

(and frankly, if holding a position like this makes me an SJW, then, well, I'm an SJW and proud of it)

About as much as discussing anything on a video game forum 'really matters'.

There isn't much else to do on one but discuss video games and what you want from them.

Why would I go looking for it? Anyway, I maintain that most people got the wrong impression because of the poor thread title, which belies the innocence of the request. Then some racist came on whining about white men.

If it's that important to you, found a studio and make games. Seriously though, when there is a CC, there is even less incentive to invest in making your character look a certain way in advertising. They were doing a military setting, so they used a stereotypical military looking guy.  They are in a majority white country, so that's what they made Shepard. It's as simple as that. Are you seriously going to look at an ad and buy the game based on what skin color the character is in the trailer?

It might influence someone's decision one way or another, for legitimate and non-trivial reasons.

This ground has been tread and retread but still bears repeating - there are an awful lot of "heroes" out there who look an awful lot like John Shepard. Maybe we change it up every once in a while, if only for variety's sake if not for the multitude of other worthy reasons that exist.

In any event, I still think a character creator is one of the most important things a game can have these days. I wish they'd stress that over emphasizing a "default" protagonist.

Am I going to? No. Would some people? Possibly. Especially if they are of a minority group rarely represented in advertising.

But I don't object to ME using Sheploo as the default. I'm saying that, if they use a default in the future, it would be more interesting, and thus better, if they were to mix things up a bit. And it's not that important to me, I'm certainly not going to boycott the game if we get another white male dudebro (well, unless said dudebro was the only option to play as...). I just think it could be improved with very little effort simply by adding some variety to the default character should they decide to go down the route of using one as the "face" of the game.

Character creator is a wonderful thing.

As for ethnicity or gender appearing in the advertising? I suppose that depends on the target audience a company is going for.

I'm not bothered one way or another. If Bioware used a Korean woman in the advertising, I'd probably raise an eyebrow because of location and then create a character I prefer anyway and get on with my life.

I'm not particularly bothered one way or another how companies choose to advertise their products.
