Why do people get so mad and upset when I ask for more diversity in gaming...?

Yes, you make Shepard be whoever you want to be but WHY didn't Bioware show that? Why did they only show one Shepard-the straight white male Shepard in all of the promo?

Because Sheploo's face is iconic like the N7 emblem, that's why.

Because some casual fans won't know it's the same game without a consistent protagonist. It's called "branding".  I'm all for making the default female or another race or sexuality, but consistency in the marketing is important.

They can market it like Jacob and Evie Frye from AC: Syndicate, separately (even though Evie still gets nothing compared to the dude).

They can market both characters, it's still win-win either way.

It's stupid not to market character creation in a game that has it, particularly when by Bioware's own metrics gamers go with a custom protagonist over the default one anyway. That's part of why they didn't have an iconic Inquisitor (though they went with dudequisitor for their trailers).

I see what you're saying, but the character creation is a thing for Bioware. Is it really that big of a selling point for Mass Effect? I know people like it, but it's an expectation now rather than a new or defining feature. I also see it as an ease/ cost cutting measure, though I suppose it wouldn't be that big a deal.

And i'd prefer to never see this again. Like, always the male being the "default" in everything. Covers, promo pics, trailers, gameplays. Just.. no more of this.

And there's no canon Shepard.

I never said it was the default in everything. I said it's what they picked. Go find a different strawman to rail against. As far as their being no canon Shepard, we'll have to see what happens in the future. They had canon male Revan and female Exile for KotOR.

I'm neither mad nor upset. I answered your question. They made a default look and used it in their promotions. Why does it bother you so much what they did in promotional material when they hand you the power in the game?

Because quite frankly, that's what Bioware believs the majority of their audicence expect Shepard to be. A to a large degree I think they're correct. For most western audicences the military is a very masculine organisation, and yes most of those men are going to straight and white.

There's actually no way to know how many people are straight. Homophobia and heteronormotivity has caused a lot of LGBT people to feel ashamed of who they are and they simply just identify as straight, because society and homophobic straight people have made them feel bad about being Gay.

That's what expect Shepard to be? So? Even if that's true why does the default Sheard and the Shepard that was used for all the promo have to be white, straight and a man? And honestly even if it is true that a majority of people who play video games are straight white men, there's a reason why. If games constantly just focus on straight white men and other people feel less represented then why would they want to play those games?

You constantly reply to my posts and you're always in threads about minorities asking for more representation. You were trolling the other thread asking for more LGBT relationships in Andromeda and now you're in this one. Why does the LGBT community and People of Color asking for more representation make you so upset?

And no it's not lol the default Male Shepard is so boring and irrelevant. I want to projectile vomit every single time I listen to Mark Meer's voice. It's so emotionless and boring, and it's not even intentional. Like nails on a chalkboard.

I enjoy the comedy these threads produce.

You were trolling the other thread asking for more LGBT relationships in Andromeda and now you're in this one.

I ended my posting in that thread by stating I agree to a 2/2/2 split of the romances, some troll I am.

Why does the LGBT community and People of Color asking for more representation make you so upset?

Upset? Ha! That's hilarious. I'm neutral btw, I just enjoy SJWs being SJWs.

And no it's not lol the default Male Shepard is so boring and irrelevant.

BioWare's marketing personnel and a large chunk of the fanbase don't think so.

I want to projectile vomit every single time I listen to Mark Meer's voice. It's so emotionless and boring, and it's not even intentional. Like nails on a chalkboard.

Sucks for you because Sheploo is the iconic face of Mass Effect, your opinion is irrelevant

It just seems like you're getting so upset when all I'm asking is for more representation in video games...and yes it does bother me. I'm just so sick and tired of the same thing. I'm tired of like 99% of video game protagonists being straight white men.

Anyway, games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age are some of the only games where you can play as a Gay man or a woman and have people react to you as a Gay man or a woman. Homophobia and sexism are addressed in Bioware's games and that's a great thing...but it just feels that by using the same Shepard, the straight white man in all their promo they were doing what every other gaming company does and just focusing on one group of fans.

Probably because you're going about it by saying things like Male Shep is inferior, non-canon, and makes you want to projectile vomit. The aggressive approach is just going to make people tune you out.

I'm a good example of that. I don't care which gender protagonist gets used in the trailers, but when someone starts being obnoxious in their demands it starts to make me hope Bioware gives them the opposite of what they are asking for. So here I am, normally not caring who Bioware puts in the trailer, now hoping its a Sheploo clone just so I can enjoy the meltdown.

Your question is specifically why I mentioned the custom protagonist numbers. People do create their own character. Customising your PC is like customising your weapons and armour. These are features that should be marketed. Perhaps not to the extent other features of the game are marketed but there's a lot of research on how customisable products sell better, full stop.

Even accounting for that, the vast majority of people are straight.

As far as representation, I've gladly played Bioware games as female characters. I've also gladly played Metroid, Portal, Tomb Raider, and Hydrophobia, and I look forward to playing Telltale's Walking Dead, to name a few. True, white males make up a lot of video game protagonists, but it's that way in other forms of media too. But I have no problem playing games where the main character doesn't look like me.

True, guess that's why BioWare went with the Gender neutral approach with DA:I.

Well, in fairness, Shepard's sexuality never makes it into trailers. If it did, well...

What are you talking about? It always did.

Mass Effect 2 had Miranda.

And 3 had Ashley.

Not true. Over the past years the number of people that identify as LGBT has been growing and it's not because there's more LGBT people, it's just that more people are comfortable with saying who they are.

Hundreds of years ago the Catholic church used to hunt and burn people for being Gay so a lot of Gay people would say they were straight. As time went on and society has become (somewhat) more comfortable with Gay people, more people have decided to come out and identify as Gay.

It's still legal to murder people for being Gay in certain countries. In Russia, "promoting" anything to do with being Gay is considered illegal and women like Lady Gaga and Madonna, people who talk about LGBT rights were putting their lives in danger by even just going to those countries. In America, it's legal to fire someone for being Gay. Trans people can be denied housing.

So yeah...there's not necessarily "more straights" it's just that the LGBT community is so oppressed so a lot of closeted people don't identify with their true sexuality or gender because they know identifying and living life as a straight/cis person is easier.

:)

Besides, it's not like it won't be true since i'm almost 99% sure they'll use a male.

Again, I'm not upset. I would suggest that you're far too focused on this though. Now if your complaint was on the over use of the "military guy" or "space marine" trope, that would be different.

The games don't acknowledge you as gay or straight. They really just acknowledge if you're in a romance or not. They just allow you to have that homosexual relationship, but they don't acknowledge it in any special way, nor should they really. It should be just the same as any other.

Your question is specifically why I mentioned the custom protagonist numbers. People do create their own character. Customising your PC is like customising your weapons and armour. Yeah, but my point was also that the character customization is assumed to be there, and they do push it in the lists of features. If you wanted to market it in a trailer, you'd show video or screen shots of the Character Creator, not show different "Shepards" in different scenes. As JayHartRIC said, consistency matters. People would think it was a different character.

And today in the Middle East they hang gays and throw them off roofs. You're right that some people feel more comfortable "coming out", but even if you double the number to account for that, you get about 3-4% of the population here in the USA.

What are you talking about? The vast majority of people (like 80%) are heterosexual.

Try at least 95%, at least here in the USA. I suppose I can't speak to other parts of the world.

Heh, Mass Effect 2 launch trailer.

"The strongest, the deadliest allies." "Tali!"

Anyway. I'd love to see a trailer showing the protagonist in a continuous scene, where every time the camera cuts away, it comes back to a different protagonist -- male, female, different face types, different gear, the whole nine yards. Really show off the robustness of the creator. That'd be fun.

I like it.
