How are Ciri or Ellie "background" characters? The former is not only playable but one of the most significant characters in the Witcher series and the latter has a hours worth of gameplay in the core game (or did you forget the part where Joel gets absolutely rekt?) and a entire prequel DLC especifically created to reveal something very important about her past.

 

Ciri's barely even in TW1 and TW2. I enjoy that series but I still think it's funny that you spend two games looking for Yennefer and end up finding Ciri.

Last of Us Remastered might include the prequel DLC about Ellie.

 

As for the picture, it's irrelevant. The reason the industry is like that now is because people have been wanting it for a long time. Get an "all time" picture or one from 1999 or something. You can't say there's no problem with female or color representation, then cite the result of people wanting female and color representation. It's like saying things weren't so bad for Jews in 1939, look at Israel.

 

And Ciri in the TW3 is a low bar.

To be fair, there is also the distinction between main character and protagonist. I haven't played The Last of Us, but from what I know, while Ellie may be a main character, Joel is the protagonist. It is possible, though difficult, to have more than one protagonist, so maybe someone who knows the game can explain to me how Ellie is a protagonist; a primary actor.

She's alluded to in TW1 she's not present. I pretty sure she's alluded to again in TW2. I only remember one of the convos about her.

Ellie might not be playable in the main game (except some mission where Joel is seriously injured), still she and Joel and both main protagonists, just that Joel is the playable one.

 

Then Ellie gets her own DLC.

When marketing a product you don't focus on the 3/5/10% of the market but the broadest possible group, and specially not when that demographic are the most aware of it already, that would be stupid to say the least.

I have no idea what the vast majority of people are, but like I already said, homophobia and heteronormotivity has caused a lot of LGBT people to stay closeted so there's no way to say how many people are Gay or straight...

And no you're wrong. Lol. I've talked about Catholics being homophobic once before. That's twice, not four times...and if you think being Gay ANYWHERE is a privilege, then you don't really know what you're talking about.

And today in the Middle East they hang gays and throw them off roofs. You're right that some people feel more comfortable "coming out", but even if you double the number to account for that, you get about 3-4% of the population here in the USA.

If we are counting female main characters to male main characters in video games the count will still heavily favor male main characters especially as protagonist. It's true that there is games where female characters do have more screentime, but then again there is lot more games with male main characters. It's pretty clear reality in gaming industry. And it seems like developers have been tackling this more cause more people have spoke about the issue so we have games where you can play as both sexes at least little amount of time or games where you can choose your character from two set protagonists- female or male. Which is good, but it's useless to talk and pretent that the numbers are equal.

 

However why are we discussing this in this thread? That is about skin color and races of PCs? ^^;

 

Personally I'd like CC where it's easier to do characters from different races. Like including monolids for eye-options would be nice I think.

That's just not true, I check my privilege on a daily basis as per Tumblr orders and I'm indeed incredibly privileged for being born in a Catholic country full of mostly Catholic people where being gay has literally zero impact in my life.

I was talking to a co-worker today..  We were talking about the lack of minorities in video games as main protagonist characters.  He's a mexican male, and I am a black male.  We both have NO problem with whatever race, skin color, gender, etc, the developer goes with.  Our biggest concern is giving us the option to create a character resembling ourselves.

That's actually true. There are very few preset black protagonists in video games. The only ones I can think of right now is CJ from GTA San Andreas and Lee from The Walking Dead.

Sure it can happen anywhere, but it's institutionalized in the Middle East. I do notice that you brought up the Catholic Church's past but want to minimize the Middle East's present.

This isn't directed at you; you just made me think about it. Notice how much we're talking about what the person looks like. For me, it's much more important to have well written characters.
