I have been playing this game for over 250 hours and would like to finish it.  Apparently something prevented me from getting the enchanted rune that destoys samson' armor.  I can't seem to keep all four players alive long enough to finish him off.  Just when I think I beat him, my last player dies.  Is there a way to get the rune from Dagna without going too far back in the game.  Origin has been absolutely no help in letting me know if there is code written in the easy mode that has Samson losing after so many boss fights.  They can't program a player to lose the game and not continue, or else nobody would buy these games.

P.S. -  I'm 63 years old and I just don't have fast reflexes, but I've gotten this far, and I just want to FINISH THE GAME.

Did you complete the quest that would allow you to get the Rune? Did you go to the temple with Cullen and find Maddox? Sadly if you backtrack to that point, you will have to go through the Temple of Mythal all over again.

If you are on the PC, there are a few walkthroughs that might work.  I don't know them, but a few people here might be able to connect you to the resources you need.

Now, if you are on a console, I'd recommend going for the level cap.  For that quest, probably about 20.  If you can restart before the Wilds, it shouldn't be an issue.  If you are in the Wilds, I really hope you have a Knight Enchanter.  If you do, and have them specced for fighting dragons, then take control of them and hammer away.  You'll need Cass as backup, Sera or Varric and if you aren't the KE, then bring Viv.  If you are she's a good choice anyway due to her Focus ability.  Healing Mists and Mighty Offense potions should help you through.  I've done it once, I was level 21 on normal.  If you really need to, drop the difficulty.  Spam Spirit Blade and make sure you can recover your Barrier with each hit.  Fade Cloak works well with it, as it'll give you time to get out of the way or avoid a nasty hit.  Stick and move, watch your mana bar.  If it gets too low, back off.  If you have armor that builds guard, use it.  Having a KE that has armor that can generate guard WHILE you are generating barrier can enable you to solo him, if you are patient.

Thats the best I can give.  Good luck.

Get an archer. Long shot spam him to death from a safe distance. Or take Sera and have her use the Thousand Cuts focus ability. Or both of these tactics, since Sera can be an archer.

The first playthrough, I didn't have Samson's rune, either.  I never even did the quest... felt like an idiot hearing about it later, actually.

I actually basically steamrolled him, though, because of two things: being extremely overpowered, and knight enchanter HAX.

The first game I did, I did all the different areas before the Wilds.  I think I was 24 or so.  Even if you're around 20, you should just be able to run over him.  If your lower, you hopefully have a save before the Wilds, and can go and level a bit (also, as long as you have a save before the Wilds, you should be able to get the rune- check your quest log, go poke Cullen, and check the War Table, there should be something in one of those places to lead you where you need to go).  The second was my main character being a Knight Enchanter.  Put on barrier, run up to him, hit him repeatedly with spirit blade, damage him when the barrier goes, jump back for a bit to throw lightning if neccessary, then close back in with barrier in spirit blade.  Blackwall acted as my tank, and I switched between him and the Inquisitor, keeping Blackwall from charging bull off in to nowhere land.

Solas and Varric basically took care of themselves, although I probably used their focus abilities.  Definitely save up the focus ability to use on this fight.  If you throw your main's Mark of the Rift on them, and then either Varric or Sera's rogue one (either which is basically HIT FOR A LOT OF DAMAGE YAY), he's going to be basically half dead before you even start.  I was sort of concerned about whether I'd want to save my main to use the knight enchanter focus, but it ended up not being neccessary.  I did use a few healing potions, but there was (IIRC) a restock not that far from where the lt is fought.

Good luck!

It sometimes works to go in with full focus bars (upgrades too, if available) for all party members, then fire them off in sequence, using the effects from the last to boost you toward the next.  Sometimes bringing more than one element helps too by setting up cross class combos using the whole party at once.  This worked really well for me during the boss fight at the old temple in JoH, especially since the visual status effects let you know who's eligible for what.  I use the pause obsessively, without any shame whatsoever, because it really helps plan exploits to increase damage while covering those under fire.

You'll get there.

Do you ever revive your party?  Makes life much easier...and yeah, trick out Sera and take her for archer.  She's great for that fight.  Rogue DW does more damage, but you can keep moving her out of harms way and she'll just keep plucking away, just don't let her pull aggro off your tank;)

I'm not much younger than you.  It's not about reflexes.  You can even play this in tactical-cam mode, where you have all the time in the world to micromanage the entire party.

To play in real time, the knight-enchanter spec is the most overpowered in the game.  If you are not one yourself, bring Vivienne along and play as her.  You want to spec her well into the KE tree, and add fade step (cold tree), immolate (fire), barrier (spirit), energy barrage and chain lightning (both storm).  Don't forget her resurgence skill to revive and heal everyone (once).  Properly specced and geared-up, and after some practice, the KE is immortal.  I recommend a fire staff to take advantage of the energy barrage reduction of enemy resistance to staff magic, followed up by an immolate or two.  The passives in the fire tree are extremely helpful with keeping your spells available.  But fade cloak and spirit blade are her real forte.  You play her as a warrior with these, smacking your foe with the blade repeatedly; then charge through him with fade step to a safe distance, let him have it with barrage/immolate.  Charge at him (with fade step) again, fade-cloak into him.  Explode-reappear right inside of him for 10X weapon damage.  Then wail on him again with the spirit blade.  Repeat.

Nothing in the game survives this.  Nothing in the game can deplete your defenses, particularly if you craft a +guard/hit fade-touched item into your staff or armor.

could the Varric long shot spamming technique work here too? instead of dragon kill Samson? that technique with high critcal chance and removing cooldown on critical hit? I don´t know the details, but someone can surely tell more about it, if it is a good way of how to kill him of course.

I don't want to sound like a troll, but are you for real? If you've been playing for 250 hours you should be pretty much invincible by now! I don't remember the Samson fight being especially difficult when playing as a high level.

If you're under-levelled, under-equipped or just really bad at DAI combat just dial down the difficulty to casual for this fight to save going back to a much earlier save.

Hmm, forgive me if I come off douche-y but this is a little hard to imagine. Samson is not a difficult boss, even without weakening his armor, especially compared to Calpernia.

All weakening his armor does is slightly lower his health anyway. Considering the fight is completely scripted, it doesn't matter much at all.

There are thresholds in his health, when he loses a certain amount he gains temporary invincibility frames and morphs into a new, stronger form. Recognize when this happens and DO NOT waste your time attack him during these moments. You'll be wasting your effort and resources.

It would help if you're at least between levels 18-23. 250 hours in I say you should definitely be within that level range. Also if you're not wearing custom made Tier 3 gear by now WITH masterworks, do so.

Party composition: more ranged fighters than combat fighters. Close-quarters combatants don't stand much of a chance at dealing damage to Samson, he has unfair tactics. Ranged fighters do most of the damage, specifically Mages.

So my advice: Go in with a 3 Mage 1 Warrior Party, or a 2 Mage 1 Rogue 1 Warrior party. Make sure the Rogue is a ranged combatant.

In my playthrough I was a Mage Trevelyan and my party was Solas, Dorian, and Cassandra. We absolutely wrecked him. There is this legendary combo between three Mages that can obliterate any enemy in the game: Inquisitor casts Mark of the Rift, Solas casts Static Cage (upgraded), Dorian casts Energy Barrage. Both Inquisitor and Solas cast Energy Barrage as soon as they are able.

^ Just try that combo, you won't believe your eyes how quickly the enemy's health bar depletes. It's unreal.

So yeah just include more ranged combatants and watch out for his moments of invincibility. You'll cream him.

It is possible to get stuck on casual.  My friend and I play DA:i a great deal, but she plays on casual and dies quite often.  She doesn't like to use tactics, but *revive and getting everyone else away from him became her best friend.  She likes to play to play, but finds casual challenging enough.

If your playing the main fights, he is the most difficult IMHO.  I found the rest easier.  Even Corypheus at the end is easier.

I rolled temps for first play through and found Calpurnia much easier.  Samson is a super tank who does damage.  He can kill your parts especially if you don't know how to move out of range.

The Knight Enchanter is fun and over-powered.  I imagine Viv would be a great choice to play, but if you were going to turn over your controls, Archer rogue is the easiest, so I'd take Sera or Varric (whoever has highest DPS) and play them.

The trick is to 'revive your party'.  They will eventually kill Sampson if you keep raising them from the dead after you exhaust your health potions.

Also if you never did it, put your whole group into formal wear.  It will give them the best defense overall.

Just keep your tank, Cassandra or Blackwell, on him and pluck away with all your ranged characters, just keep them back and away from him.

If you need extra help, and you just can't see it, youtube a walkthrough of the fight.  Plenty of people will show you how they beat the fight.  Just search for walkthrough and add, name of mission, you need help on.

My 67 year old mother plays this game.  She got stuck on the Highland Ravager on casual and couldn't beat it for the longest time.  She is not going deep into tactics and thinking about passive buffs or anything like that.  She is not going to play using the tac cam and micromanage her party.  She just wants a nice casual play through of an RPG where she gets to kill some things and create a story.  What finally got her past that dragon was my brother (who lives in the same town as her, I do not), telling her to take Vivienne and control her and just wail away on the dragon using the KE spirit blade.  So I'm going to give you the same advice for Samson.  If used properly, your KE will always have a barrier up to keep you from taking damage.  So if you are a KE mage, just wail away with spirit blade and make sure you take a lot of the KE tree abilities (you can buy a respec amulet from the shop at your forge in the undercroft if needed).  I'd also recommend immolate, and some fire tree passives.Guardian Spirit and barrier from the spirit tree.   You can also take some of the lightning stuff as well - chain lightning.  The winter tree is more for passives and buffs rather than massive damage.

Having said that - make sure you load up on health potions regen potions and the like. If you have the health grenade fully upgraded take that.  (If you don't have that, it can be found under the keep in Crestwood.  You have to kill a spider named Snowball.)   Actually, if you can go back before the Arbor Wilds, take some time to upgrade all those potions.  Jar of Bees is always a reliable damage dealer and can be thrown into groups to create chaos.  Make sure the party you take has all their potion slots filled up. My mom only had her inquisitor's slots filled and didn't realize you could place potions for your support party members as well.  It was eye opening!

Crafting wise, cobble together the best Tier 3 armor using the best Tier 3 materials you have.  Make sure you do not put any beserk fade touched metals on your armor or weapons.  That will kill you off right quick.  You might consider crafting armor that generates guard on hit.  Several fade touched materials generate it - silverite, onyx, obsidian.  I got a fade touched cotton in on PT that generated it (saw it once, never saw it again, but I will use the heck out of anything that generates guard).  You could also try for something like unbowed on your mage or rogue which likes to pop off quite frequently as a buff.

Who are you taking with you on the mission?  I'd take Cassandra or Blackwall for your warrior.  My personal preference is to take Dorian as my secondary mage (I typically play as a Knight Enchanter mage - but all three mages will work fine for the mission) and either Varric or Sera.  I'd avoid taking Iron Bull or Cole.  They are both really squishy unless you want to micro-mange them or use all your guard on hit generating fade touched items on their armor (and even then they still both require more micro-management than anyone else).

Anyhow,  good luck!
