I would rather play as any of the Mass Effect 2 characters. compared to the rest of the squad shepard looks only a little bit more interesting than Gordon Freeman. They all have a detailed backstory, and stronger personalities, they don't get involved with everyones problems, they are less than perfect, they're more real. I prefer them enough that I'd be willing to give up the illusion of character creation and go for lots more auto dialogue for the opportunity.
shepard is the most boring main character in mass effect

Because he was an avatar for the player I didn't mind the lack of personality or backstory to him. It was only in ME3 where he became a symbol to everyone and people treated him like a Mary Sue, and he acted like a Mary Sue too, that I started to really dislike playing as him.

Despite its flaws, DA2 protagonist is really well done. He could be a sarcastic dude, an angry person, or a diplomat, depending on how you play.

Eh it's the destiny of every protagonist in a game where you create the guy/gal in question. Isn't the Inquisitor boring too?

Shepard is boring? What? As far as RPG main characters go, she's hands-down my favorite. She gets enough of a backstory so you don't feel like she just dropped out of the sky, and the rest is up to you as a player. Who to befriend, how to act, who to kill or spare, what choices you make. I'm genuinely curious to know what other RPG main PC you prefer?

People must not have been playing them right then. My Shepard was an icon because of what she managed to accomplish, but it never once got to her head nor did she ever act like a mary sue. People treated her that way for a reason. Who the heck else was the galaxy going to entrust their fate too in ME3? The council? The alliance? Or the soldier who destroyed a Reaper and stopped the Collector's? Not to mention the galaxy knows about her killing the other two Reapers, solving the Krogan issue and the Rannoch War. Nobody else did what she did, or could do it. Even then she never acted better than her crew, she was just another part, but she was the one in charge as per military ranks so she overrides their choices when she felt neccesary.
I personally enjoyed it when Shepard got the respect she deserved. It made playing through the game rewarding and worth it to see someone I saved, but didn't have to, come up to me and tell me I allowed them to do great things with their lives.
Seriously, where are these complaints coming from? All I normally see is people super sad that the new game won't star Shepard... now suddenly Shepard was not a great character? Is it a coping mechanism? Next people are going to say that Anderson or Wrex wasn't a great character.

"My" Shepard wasn't really my Shepard with how many assumptions Bioware made on how the players would play them.

"But Shepard ... they'll follow him. He's a hero, a bloody icon."
Not to mention that the entire game of Mass Effect 2 was based on Shepard being the only person who could save the galaxy, hence he had to be resurrected.

Sucks to be your Shepard OP. Mines was freaking awesome. I liked my ME2 squadmates but I sure as heck wouldn't want to play them.

I think people are confusing character development with mental gymnastics to be honest.

Or we'd rather role-play than watch a play?

Yet not many people seemed to have enjoyed the character development of the ME2 crew, especially in ME3. I do think Shepard should have been given a good personal side story. But that doesn't mean the game would have been good if you were playing Zaeed or something. You still would have been the savior of the galaxy everyone is relying on.
