Shepard is obviously off limits. Gagarin, Aldrin, and Armstrong are used elsewhere (places), and many Greek and Roman names and heroes have been put to use with planets and clusters. I thought Sagan would be a cool name, as he has inspired millions with the original Cosmos show amongst many speeches and classes. Grissom could be a possibility as well, as it can be a way to keep the trilogy tied to this new future.
What are your thoughts and predictions and why?

I would actually like a change, i'd prefer a set name an wee get to choose say a nickname just for the simple reason of ppl referring to me by my first name, i found being referred to as "shepard" or "commander" to be pretty jarring at times
While the first game used an astronaut's surname for the protagonist, considering this game's stranger-in-a-strangle-land setting, maybe they'll use an explorer from the Viking Age - Age of Sail?
If so Erikson, Drake, Magellan, or Da Gama would all make for good names.

If he/she is in command of a ship the protagonist should either be one of the Commander ranks or a Captain.
Modern frigates are usually commanded by Lt. Commanders, Commanders, or their equivalent rank.
