Let's be serious for a moment.

 

If the story plays in the far future, long after the trilogy... then wouldn't it be plausible that all the races of humanity got mixed up? Maybe we get a protagonist with asian, african, european and native american ancestors whose name will be James Huang Okoro? Who speaks with a french accent?

Pretty obvious there will only be a singular "name" everyone will refer to the new PC in audio dialogues, Bioware's been doing it for ages now. So I doubt a long last name with full first name. Maybe even just a job title (Pathfinder?).

My money is on Thirsk, or MacLean.  The two names out of the first batch of Canadian astronauts that are both easy to pronounce and general enough for a game marketed at the English speaking world.  Money is also easy to pronounce, but I think they may not want that homonym for the main character.

 

Though I for one would love to play as a Cmdr. Lovell or Cmdr. Glenn.

Shepard needed a actual first name. The guy/gal needs a default name. You supply the middle name just for your own saves.


At some point his friends, and especially his LI, needed to stop calling him Shepard. It was very impersonal.

I always wondered about the possibility of BioWare recording a number of names to choose from, and Bethesda did just that with Fallout 4. It'd sure suck if it was just John and Jane though.

I know this is bad of me, but honestly? I'd be fine with a preset name, if it meant, say THAT YOUR BEST FRIENDS IN THE UNIVERSE COULD ACTUALLY CALL YOU BY IT ONCE, LET ALONE GET IT RIGHT ON YOUR FREAKING MEMORIAL PLAQUE AFTER YOU DIED SAVING THE WHOLE GALAXY JEEZE EVEN ANDERSON GOT HIS ACTUAL NAME WHY CAN'T SHEPARD IT'S JUST TEXT I MEAN...

 

Uh. Okay. Anyway. Pathfinder is possible. But I would also be in favor of something less formal. Possibly a preset last and first name.
