That's a good shout.
Something Russian would provide a nice balance.
No, thank you. Even though the game is set into the future, these current days a Russian name wouldn't sit right. I definitely wouldn't want to play with a Russian character in any form, even name only. I mean no offence to Russian people but I hope BW chooses a neutral, universal name that works for everyone and in every country.

I don't see how you can have a universal name without making one up. Names are part of one's history, they are by their nature specific not universal.
As for Russians, I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly and I'm not sure I want to know. Russians are people, like any other, and their trials and achievements are still worth remembering.

Well, maybe not universal but a neutral one. And I'm referring to current and resent past actions, and threats of Russian leadership and military. We're also adjoining neighbour to Russia and trust me, not everyone here are currently all happy campers. I do respect the people, the history and achievents highly, make no mistake about that, but it doesn't mean I want to play as a Russian character. Like I said, I mean no offence, it is just how I feel and I have the right to feel that way.
I'd prefer something less english this time. There is a lot of cool chineese and indian second names (Li, Chan, Achara, Gandar and so on).
I also agree that there should be voiced first name, because in previous chapters they didn't even care enough to use it in letters. Several names for choice would be even better.
Nazara is fine too.
Captain Sparrow of course!
Female: River Tam
Male:John Crichton
Gun Name: Winona
Stargazer = MIND EXPLODE

My most despised attribute of ME games... the forced name.
Steve
Let's be serious for a moment.
If the story plays in the far future, long after the trilogy... then wouldn't it be plausible that all the races of humanity got mixed up? Maybe we get a protagonist with asian, african, european and native american ancestors whose name will be James Huang Okoro? Who speaks with a french accent?
I can't take anyone that speaks with a french accent seriously.
I would actually like a change, i'd prefer a set name an wee get to choose say a nickname just for the simple reason of ppl referring to me by my first name, i found being referred to as "shepard" or "commander" to be pretty jarring at times
I know it makes me feel like theres no point in naming the character.....unless they give us a small list of names to pick from that have been recorded but bioware need money for that

Jack/Jill O'Neill. Why not another Stargate universe name? I can't think of any good reason.
Bob.
Gago.
Spike Spiegel
Columbus?

The alternative is every character referring to the protagonist as 'Commander' or whatever his or her rank is. That might work in some scenes but it would be bizarre in romance dialogue, or dialogue between the protagonist and characters he or she is close friends with.
I'd much rather the character had both a set first and last name than a fully customizable name that never shows up in dialogue.
Andromadeus/Andomedrea Maximus.
I always wondered about the possibility of BioWare recording a number of names to choose from, and Bethesda did just that with Fallout 4. It'd sure suck if it was just John and Jane though.
Well, isn't John and Jane Doe the usual default names for people who haven't been identified yet? That's probably why they gave Shepard the John/Jane names.
Though how nice it would be for the protags to have a set name and surname? What if the male and female have different surnames?

That's just not possible.

I already corrected that and said more neutral name, instead of universal.
