How about..Cmdr Warner, Gardner, Ballard, Bering, Conrad or perhaps Edi-Moreau ![]()

Being addressed by a title throughout the game is the worst option they could go with. Sure people can choose their name but it doesn't actually affect anything and it is very awkward in conversations and character interaction.
It was weird enough being called Shepard by your close friends and romance option so I hope they just go all the way and have a first name.

Nope. Title and nicknames are the way to go. And not everyone uses first names to refer to people all that often.

Well it's most likely going to be symbolic name, like Shepard was: leading the flock trough the Reaper storm.

I already corrected that and said more neutral name, instead of universal.
What's the difference between 'neutral' and 'universal?'
Anyways, in 2011 it was reported that the most typical person in the world was a 28-year-old Han Chinese male, so if you want a name that is as neutral as possible, you'd probably go with names like Chang or Zhang. By 2029, it's estimated that India will overtake China as the most populous country in the world, so you could say that names like Ram or Patel would become good candidates for a 'neutral' name.
Of course, I suspect this isn't what is behind the request for a 'neutral' name; if you want a name that closely corresponds to your own ethnic background because you'd prefer to play as a character of that background, then feel free to say so, but I would strongly resist the idea that names from that background are somehow more universal or neutral than names from everywhere else.

Ranger? Traveler? Something like that, presumably.

By 2029, it's estimated that India will overtake China as the most populous country in the world, so you could say that names like Ram or Patel would become good candidates for a 'neutral' name.

Perhaps neutral isn't the right word either, sorry. Not sure which would be, without always ruffling somebodys feathers, which is not what I want to do. And no, I definitely wouldn't want a name that corresponds to my own ethnic background. It would sound so bad that it's not even funny. ![]()
But anyway, I leave the whole name thing into BW's hands and be happy with anything they come up with. They did well with 'Shepard' and I trust them to do so with the new protagonist, as well. ![]()

Shepard is obviously off limits. Gagarin, Aldrin, and Armstrong are used elsewhere (places), and many Greek and Roman names and heroes have been put to use with planets and clusters. I thought Sagan would be a cool name, as he has inspired millions with the original Cosmos show amongst many speeches and classes. Grissom could be a possibility as well, as it can be a way to keep the trilogy tied to this new future.
What are your thoughts and predictions and why?

I hope it's Armstrong.
Besides being a great name, it would be a nice tribute to Neil Armstrong, who passed away in 2012.
Haha. I couldn't help it.

I think a canon nickname that is different than the first name could work as well.
You just need something more personal than rank and last name for some conversations.

I'd love to see them use Tereshkova, after Valentina Tereshkova, but they've have to record every line that used the name twice, since Russian sir names are gendered (Male would be Tereshkov, female Tereshkova). If they wanted to stick to US Astronauts, Ride, after Sally Ride, or Jemison, after Mae Jemison would be awesome. I'd prefer Ride, because she's no longer with us, and I think it would be a nice tribute, but it's a marginal preference over Jemison. Both of them are amazing people.

I'd go with Walker. Walker will take the leftovers of the Milky Way and guide them all to Tomorrow-Morrow Land.
