Can you make a Mass Effect game in 2016, focusing on "exploration", without space combat / space flight?

(Already a thing I disliked a bit in ME3: the last part featuring a space fight against the Reapers and... no control over one of the ships there. Even a RTS sequence would have been great (ala Suikoden / Dragon Commander for instance).)

I had the Mako in ME1, the Hammerhead in ME2 and something I didn't even have the chance to pilot in ME3.

With No Man's Sky, Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen coming and considering SWTOR had some space combat, would it be a major missed opportunity to ignore space flight/space combat?

I'm not asking for ME:A to be a space sim, far from that. But it's time to fully use the setting of the game instead of making it a "futuristic" Dragon Age with desert/lava/snow/forest zones.

For your inspiration:

I would vote against space combat, I'd rather leave that for flight simulators.

Do MEU ships map very well onto this kind of game? Bridge Commander was a bit underwhelming, IMO.

I've been playing Elite: Dangerous on Xbox One for the past week and my favorite part of the game is the free roaming/flying. Space combat is boring and tired at this point. Traveling and exploration are much more interesting aspects to me.

Haven't they already said there will be some form of it in the game? Sure they did?

Yes.

It's not like flying through empty black stuff is a particularly riveting form of exploration.

It would be cool having a space flight sim that replace loading screen but i really doubt that we will ever see it in game.

Since we are not the pilot of the "New Normandy", any space combat in the game will likely be done cinematic style as in previous games.

And they'll never, ever make a space combat mission as part of the main story, it's a 100% bad idea.

How is it a 100% worst idea than having missions with the Mako or the Hammerhead?

Yes. I vote against space combat, as well. The fights against those TIE fighters in Kotor always annoyed me to no end.

It was really ****** cool in Halo Reach though, but I simply doubt Bioware could pull it off.

Mass Effect was in general an entrance for Bioware to the whole gameplay-focused gaming thing (counting out their very first game of course) but in my own opinion they aren't anything remarkable in this regard. Anything ME3 did to spice up things felt decent but it stood in Gears of War's shadow (the game they tried mimicing) and DA:I doesn't exactly feel smooth in its approach to third person action-based combat either. Mako was bad in ME1 and despite of its upgrades I seriously doubt it's gonna feel the way it needs to feel in the new game... that's just Bioware's gameplay in general for me. It is kind of there but it just doesn't feel tight enough and if I wanted space-combat I wanted it to be tight.

Space sim territory is a whole other game and I doubt even Star Citizen will manage to blend both aspects in one game. Just give us the galaxy map and interesting planets to explore. I'd prefer maybe two major hubs and then lots of smaller maps for the individual planets. The formula they started with ME1 will work fine. If they're smart they'll build on that.

Let's be realistic, MEA just can't compete with SC in this gameplay aspect.

Instead of wasting ressources for this tiny part of MEA Bioware should rather focus on what they are good at and what is the main part of the game. Epic story, interaction with NPCs, realistic characters and bangin alien chicks like James Bond in space.

I don't know, maybe it's because I hadn't played a space-sim in a long time, but combat in in SC is super boring.

I'm pretty sure there will be space flight in ME:A. They made comments during N7 day regarding flying your own ship and the survey leak mentions it too.

As much as I like space sims (have invested heavily in SC), I'm not sure I like the idea in a Mass Effect game. I'd rather they concentrate on core gameplay features rather than a gimmicky space flight mechanic.

Of course you can. Having said that, there could be an option for having Star Wars Battlefront like space battles in, you guessed it, multiplayer!  :wizard:

Space combat? Does jumping from ship to debris to ship tailing a bad guy count as space combat?

Well, our ship won't be a single-seat fighter. The "Tempest" or what ever it will be called in the end is probably a frigate like the Normandy.

I am a huge SC/CR fan (being called a fanboy on numerous occasions), but I definately "don't" want to see space flight sim in MEA, leave it as a shooter and leave the space games to what they do best. :)

Cheers

Space combat is incredibly hard to get right... I'd rather not see them try and just focus on shaking up the third person shooting a bit.

Mass Effect 2/3 felt painfully generic.
