Can you make a Mass Effect game in 2016, focusing on "exploration", without space combat / space flight?

Sure you can. Some other games doing something doesn't necessarily mean the Mass Effect series has to start doing it.

I'm content with a few good cutscenes for space combat.

Yes, but many fans have been wanting space combat for years now.  I would love to see it make it's way into this game.  But if not, I won't be disappointed.

You never ever want to cram a game with too many mechanics.

I think one interesting idea (and maybe an economic one at that), would be to have space battles/exploration not take place in a cutscene but take place real time from inside the ship. Your main character can do some captain-y stuff and all you feel is impacts, evasive manuevers, the sounds of weapons firing, inertial dampeners, etc from the inside of the ship. It would be more of a cinematic experience than a mechanical one, but mechanically it would be an extension of the dialogue system vs adding entirely new ones.

Can't think of any games that do it, but in my head it would be like an interactive version of this:

Tbh, ME1-3 didn't makes space combat seem like it'd be all that fun to do.

I think there is a real danger this game is trying to do too many things. In my opinion the game should mainly be about story, decisions, characters and hybrid shooter/rpg third person combat. I am already worried we will spend upwards of 50% of our SPer time driving around or running fetch quests. So I don't really want more distractions for the devs.

I just can't see a way of BioWare adding something like this that would be fun for me to play, especially after trying my hand at their space combat in The Old Republic. I would recommend just looking for a developer that has the team that works well in the space combat area and follow their projects for I think that would result in a final product that would be fun to play.
