I know this is an open forum for anyone and everyone; however, why do people come to BioWare's forums to hate on their games?

I simply don't understand the appeal of trolling.  Is it fun to trash other people's taste in gaming?

What are these people seeking and what do they get out of it?

I've been trying to map my brain around it, and I got nada.

Cam someone please explain the sadistic pleasure jollies derived by hurting other people's feelings by trashing something they like?

What I don't get is that it's very much intentional.

Where does one learn to derive their happiness (or mitigate their unhappiness) from flagellating other people's fandom, on a site that's intent is discussion; however, most of the people that come to it would be fans of it.

Discuss please.

Gimme a W...Gimme a T...Gimme a F?

Seriously, WTF?  I'm told to ignore them...yeah, that just means I talk less in threads so as not to cause conflict, but doesn't resolve anything.  Grow a thicker skin? I'm practically walking callous; I'm seriously seeking insight.

What is the major malfunction?

So far you're making more noise than the trolls themselves.

Plus, not everyone who bashes something is a troll. Some just think feature X is bad and maybe there is a chance of X getting fixed in future installments if a lot of voices disapprove of X now.

There is this. Also, people who dislike something are more apt to complain than are people like something are apt to praise.

But not all of the hateful posts are trolls. Some people have legitimate complaints, or feel their (sometimes unreasonable) expectations weren't met by the game, or are just genuinely unhappy with the product for whatever reason.

Yes, that's me making a ton of noise.

I far exceed every troll on BioWare.

If all four legged creatures are horses, I am by far the biggest troll anyone has ever seen!  I'm huge.  Little dogs everywhere.

See?  I'm punchy.  I'm never punchy.  Seriously, al the negativity on DA:I and the new ME general discussion topics are wearing me down.
@nightscraw

I had considered the like vs. dislike complaints (though I didn't mention it), but I'm glad you brought it up and gave it voice.  It is a huge point.

No, not everyone who disagrees is a troll, agreed; however, before last week I had never really seen anyone truly "trolling" BioWare, so to me the last week has increased exponentially from none to some.

Most people who had complaints about DA:I prior to last week were just complaining about shortcomings of the game.

That being said, this last week seems to have gotten a bit nasty.  Am I just being uber sensitive?  It is entirely possible.  If I am the only one that feels this way, then it could be just me.

People go to things they don't like in order to vent about why they don't like it. This doesn't make them trolls. People enjoy their freedom of speech. They realize this does not mean the right to be read or listened to. You are free to ignore it, and if it bothers you, then that's what you should do.

People want to be able to express their opinions. They want to get their ideas out there. They may want to be heard, but even if they aren't heard at least they spoke up.

Some feel that their criticism will be constructive.

Some want to talk with others of like mind and feel some vindication for how they feel.

As long as people aren't breaking rules regarding common decency, I see nothing wrong with this. The alternative is to become a totalitarian world run by elitist snobs, a.k.a. the Wikia websites.

I haven't seen any change in the amount of trolling. People criticizing games is normal in a gaming forum, so I don't know how you get from that to "troll." I'm pretty sure most of these people are saying what they actually think, so I can only assume that the issue is that you disagree with them. I don't happen to see that as an issue.

Personally, I have never had my feelings hurt because someone else said they didn't like something that I liked. In fact, I am even friends with people who don't like the same things that I do.

BioWare should release an HD Remastering of Shattered Steel, then make a cinematic trailer for Shattered Steel 2.

BioWare has strayed too far from its roots, BioWare should go back with a mecha shooter game.

There was always negativity. People rage when they don't like something. Happened with DA2, ME3. Where you around after ME3? March 2012, it was a war zone around here. Factions. Movements. Meltdowns. Ban hammers where thrown. Sub-forums were locked. Mirandalorian Wars. Team BirdsallSa. The Synthesis Threads!!

Things are actually quiet now.

Ya, the forums were pretty crazy with the whole Retake Mass Effect and whatnot.

I'm not sorry that I did add to it a bit, but it did get crazy.

The vast majority of game players rarely even visit the official forums, and fewer still bother posting on them, you just need to check the number of registered forum members/active posters against the number of copies the game has sold (if available) to realise this.

The ones that do post tend to fall into several groups, those who like forums and enjoy the social aspect and are active on them on many different Game Company sites, those seeking  technical help or game strategy advice, those who would like to post feedback and discuss the game hoping the devs will take notice and those who enjoy a good  argument.

The latter group contains some who could fall into the type of poster the OP refers to, but not all of those are what the forum moderators would class as trolls, so the moderators tend to only step in if a thread turns into a flame war.

If certain forum members post threads that annoy you, simply ignore them, if they are really trolls the last thing they want is to be ignored. ;)

Not really sure there is any need for this thread, it's hardly helping matters is it?

I agree that there are some trolls on this forum, but I've also seen users accused of trolling just because they criticise Bioware. BW is one of the big names in the video game industry, of course their games are going to be compared to their contemporaries.

War gets the blood pumping! Now... some people lack the mental capacity to actually go to war, so come to the internet to start one. Human nature. Way to deal with it.

Why though? Why does people not liking the things you enjoy affect you in any way? This may sound a little callous though it isn't intended to be I promise, but if you can't handle people disagreeing with you, or criticising things you like, or just negativity in general. You are going to find the Internet to be a harsh and unforgiving place to be.

Don't know what you or others know as trolls, but the definition I grew accustomed to long ago was less about them trashing people and more about getting reactions you could play people with. Then again, back then trolling was an art form and more satire than straight up antagonizing people. Stuff like "skip SP, MP is the only important thing" wouldn't categorize as trolling, that's just being plain stupid, too obvious and entirely predictable. That's like punching a baby and then patting your own shoulders for being subtle ...

And haters simply gonna hate. No point in deigning them with anything more than just that.

Well, even Bioware's best games have their fair share of problems. I'd guess there was once the mindset that the devs would read such criticisms and it be taken into account for the next upcoming whatever.

But that was before the dark times.

Before the Mass Effect trilogy ended.

After that whole thing, I wouldn't blame any of the devs for not daring to step foot here.

The snark can only have increased from there. (I'm guessing. I haven't looked outside of off topic in a while)

But I don't really see that as a problem though. Its reflective of people's perceptions.

Take the Fire Emblem thread. A new game announced and  the branching story's been split into two games for some reason. And all we really do in that thread is openly mock the thing. Many still love the series I'm sure, but we make light of a goof like that for what it is, with a few distancing themselves entirely from the next one.

I'll take a few good jests along with the spirit to just get over it and move on over the butt hurt and rage the like we saw from some 'retakers' any day.
