So, hardly anybody could dispute that Shepard's armour is one of the most iconic - if not the most iconic - things about them. But I've been wondering, what do you all think about our new protagonist saving the galaxy...not wearing a suit of armour?

Think about it, in total almost half of Shepard's squad fight alongside him/her in what is practically civilian clothing. To name a few examples, Miranda rocks the catsuit, Tali wears what is essentially a fancy hazmat suit and Jack is blowing people away wearing nothing but pants and a belt. And the belt ain't even worn in the traditional way.

You could argue that this is because of rule of cool and I absolutely agree, but the existence of personal shield generators and biotic barriers sort of justifies it. Your mileage may vary on this, though. Gameplay-wise it's the shields that take the brunt of the damage taken and with the exception of a certain squadmate, armour seems to be there just to look pretty (which is fine by me, why would you have a shield bar, an armour bar and a health bar?)

So, back to my original question. What do you think about our protagonist saving the galaxy rocking something else besides a big ol' suit of armour? Also, what alternatives can you think of?

Me personally, I wouldn't mind our Fem!Protag rocking a catsuit like Miranda. Lol.

Honestly, I miss the inventory system and giving my squadmates armor. Giving more defense, I hated they nixed a good portion of rpg elements.

To answer it, I don't like it. I absolutely hated when fable removed armor in 2 for sake of customization. Like they couldn't do that for armors.

Armour is superiour and the last line of protection.  Even stands up to collectours.  I want my character weauring it.

If you're playing an adept or something I guess I can see armour taking a backseat, but I will be a warriour on the front lines.

I prefer lean, form fitting armor for my characters. I do not want to look neutral, bulky, clunky, and masculine, but agile, flexible, feminine (curvy), and sexy. I think I have used enough adjectives! :P Before anyone calls me sexist against women; I am a woman, and this is just my preference. I do not want a catsuit armor, but I liked the concept for the female protagonist in the BioWare art and this fan concept art of the female armor. Both were very quarian in design.

I like the idea of female armor being more free and agile. I am, though, usually a heavy armor kind of guy in any RPG, so for males I want my char to look like a modern legionary - to intimate by looks alone. And, of course, to be safe when the bullets start flying.

I am with you 100%. I love more elegant, sleek, form-fitting armors and hope there is armor styles like it.

I like the armor that Shepard wore and if the main character is N7, that armor would be fine with me

I have a thing for longcoat/ duster armor, so I hope there's more kinds of armor than just military armor in this game. I can imagine wearing a duster and using the jetback as the coattail glides in the wind as I'm smashing my omni-blade on some poor fools head. Bonus points if its off the cliff of a mountain onto a grounded enemy. Would totally make the game for me.

I'd gladly sacrifice shields if it meant I could kick ass in a leather jacket.

You could go the whole way and give it a weight and more protection, (say DR to health or something). Give options. Because yeah, shields and improved movement do make a strong case for no armour. Of course hazardous environments are another matter.

If you mean things like poisonous atmospheres and hard vacuum then the unarmoured squadmates in the original trilogy did use what looked like sci-fi rebreathers.

Oh, catsuits? You're one dirty-minded bosh'tet, OP.

Have you ever seen a woman in an EOD suit? Woooo. Then again, a woman who is used to rocking that sort of armor would probably make short work with most men. Still, Combat Hardsuits are essentially a glorified EOD suit, designed to stop bullets instead of shrapnel.

That said, I'm a straight man, playing female characters in pretty much every game. But hey, don't look at me like some sick f*ck! Last time I looked, most of my female characters rocked full-body armor to some degree. Granted, not in modern-day games, where it's just a plate carrier over that uniform... It's actually immersion-killing when the armor with the highest rating in a game is pretty much armored bikini. For me, anyway. As I said, I ain't no sick f*ck. I think......

So, yeah. Civvies are fine by me... on the Citadel/Normandy and comparable areas of the Andromeda galaxy. Gimme various types of armor that look believable - I don't want another Mars, where Liara's running around in civvies in Martian atmosphere. Is that even survivable? (Pssst, nope - supposedly when Mars gets FRIGGIN' HOT, the temperature might not freeze your arse off in seconds - and I didn't even account for other possibilities that I've no idea about)

Id like to have a wide option of armor types and segments so I can craft the best armor for my class and play style. Id like to have the option to be  a heavy armored adapt that used pure offensive biotoics and wears the armor so he dose not need to keep up a barrier so his attacks hit harder. Or be a light and agile soldier that used his jump pack and quick feet to move and flank his targets wail not getting hit as much as a bullet sponge would. Im jsut saying why not mix and match to get a unique look and stats to best help your play style.

I detest armor that looks like it was painted on the protagonist just as much as bulky armor that looks like you could hardly move around in it without getting stuck everywhere.- I like the middle ground, somewhat form fitting and effective yet looking like real protective armor.

And this goes for both genders.

This was my favorite:

I'm hoping that they do like in Inquisition, that you can swap out armor for yourself and your companions and it reflects each character's personal style when they wear it, so we all get armor, but everyone can have their own 'iconic image' or whatever.

Because party members going into combat in civilian attire IS ridiculous. They shouldn't be wearing this stuff while they're in combat situations. And it's LUDICROUS that the quarians would allow the various squadmates onto their flotilla when they're wearing no more than a breathing apparatus, particularly since Jack can wander around half naked, leaving skin cells everywhere. Not to mention the fact that in some of those environments, exposed flesh or exposed eyes would still cause serious damage that probably could have killed whoever.

I disliked that myself. There were armors in DAI my companions had that I would have loved my character to wear but couldn't because it was solely for that companion.

Armour design aesthetic and in particular Shepard's is the most favourite element of ME for me, so I hope Bioware keeps to it for ME:A(with iterations of course). I really liked what i saw on ME:A poster floating around the forum right now and hope they don't deviate from that design language. Squadmates getting proper armour including helmets should be a given(Garrus was great). It would be nonsensical to see someone in Samara's, Miranda's or - for extra hilarity - Jack's outfit trying to run around on a planet surface in some acidic rain or at minus 20-30°C or on a surface of a planetoid void of any atmosphere.

I'd like to add something.

It's perfectly possible to get the ME:A main cast to wear something different than actual armour suits for periods of time during actual missions justified by the game's story: for example you get ambushed during shore leave, you are on an infiltration mission in an habitable environment etc. For such instances i'd like them to wear something clearly futuristic and yes, i do like bodysuits/catsuits for females, too. Something like this:

Looks fashionable, somewhat sci-fi, some cool visors/glasses also there and a bit badass, too.

Agreed, I don't want a skin tight, cameltoe catsuit but I like the look of ME:A's female pc armour because it looks protective but not bulky.

And doesn't have the codpiece the ME team loved putting on Shepard's armour.
