So I plan on starting up another playthrough soon, and since my first character was a Champion-Tank, I figured I would take a more offensive approach with a DPS CC Mage, and what better way to do that than to spec into RF. The problem is I don't really know what's optimal, and what isn't my first playthrough was on Casual, and I didn't even finish it since a lot of unforseen circumstances got in the way. Well now I want to start fresh, and up the ante.

I basically want to know, what are the most optimal staves? best accessories for my spec? what stats should I focus on (Both offensively/Defensively) Give me some examples of what worked for you.

I don't have my equipment screenshots at the moment as I'm at work, however I've found with my Rift Mage that going with +critical chance and +critical damage turns you into an absolute SHREDDING machine.

My stave is masterwork'd with 10% chance on hit of 5-hit hidden blades and I utilise Lightning Cage heavily.

You don't hit massive crits (although Fire Mine can easilly reach 7k+ for me) but you make up for it with an insane amount of weaker hits. Your stave attacks alone can hit for 400-800 per strike, not including bonus damage from Lightning Cage and Hidden Blades or the multi-hit Energy Barrage. I only find myself using 3 skills at the moment - Lightning Cage, Energy Barrage and Fire Mine. These skills got me all the way through Jaws of Hakkon on Nightmare without a single wipe.

Now, admittedly, there's not any real use of Rift Mage skills in there - but the passives are what empowers Rift Mage's, in my opinion. Plus, Firestorm is always in my skill bar if I get the urge to unleash it.  ;)

I thank you for your reply, Though I do have some questions. Was stacking critical more damaging than say.. stacking attack? I'd also like to note that I've seen a lot of people say that lightning bugs out in combination with RF skills, is that not a thing anymore? Last but not least, do you find Firestorm to do more damage than say.. Mark of the Rift?

I'll be honest with you - I've yet to play a mage that went down the +attack route, so I can't give you an accurate answer on that. I don't know an in-depth amount of information on the mathematics behind it all. All I know is, I crit and I crit often.  ;)

I believe there is still some bugs regarding the Weakness status with Rift Mages, but because of the skills that I use it's non-consequential. I rely on Lightning Cage for increasing my DPS and my crowd control. I don't use, nor do I need, Pull of the Abyss, freezing, etc.

The only downside to the build, IMO, is that it's repetitive and doesn't require much strategy. Plant your large-radius Lightning Cage around the majority/all the enemies and just go all out offensive. Lightning Cage also prevents mages and demons from teleporting out the area, rogues in stealth often trip the boundaries and get pulled back to the center, etc. It's a very powerful and safe build that I've found exceptional in Nightmare mode.

As for Firestorm - I keep it there for personal satisfaction. I like being able to call it down whenever I'm in the mood to - generally on bosses.

However, if you want to play the part of Rift Mage, utilising their skills as well as the passives, I would suggest going down a slightly different route - utilise Pull of the Abyss and AoE skills to cause carnage for the enemy.

So your build was more about elemental offense than combining it with RF skills, I assume that's one way of going about it. I'm wanting to use those abilities though.
