Can we have the rules treat all squadmates the same?

In the earlier ME games, if the squadmates fell in battle, they would auto-revive when the battle was won. But if Shepard fell in battle, it was Game Over, even if the squadmates were still fighting.

I'd like those two events to follow the same rules. So either it's Game Over whenever any squadmember falls, or the remaining squadmembers will keep fighting, even after the protagonist falls (with Game Over only occurring once the entire squad is down).

You know how stupid the AI is in ME1 and in ME2 with your squadmates, even with micro-managing?  I don't like that idea.  Just give me the critical mission failure and let me start all over again.

Sometimes Garrus loves to get into melee range with his big a** sniper, and go toe-to-toe with a banshee.  Sometimes Miranda wants to stand in the corner and look pretty.  And Jack likes to weaken their integrity by doing NOTHING.

Sometimes I've felt like a one-man show.

Plus if you fall in combat, would they revive you?  Would the battle drag on?  Soo many things the dev's would have to get right.

Republic Commando did this, and I remember it mostly working fine. You also could elect whether squad mates would attempt to revive you or fight on as they were. That game was built around the premise of your squad mates actually doing things though.

Anyway, I approve.

I don't think these things are insurmountable. Maybe they were on old gen systems, but they've got a lot more room to stretch their legs now.

I don't want a game over screen when I (or one of my squadmates, for that matter) die. I should be able to revive them, and they should be able to try to revive me.

Agreed. And on a similar note, your squadmates should do the same damage, have the same durations, have the same cooldowns etc. as you do (assuming the same gear/build).

Just because it was doesn't mean it always has to be.

Maybe it could be like kotor and dragon age, if we fall we play as one of the squad mates until the battle is over, or until we revive the main pc

This is something that Mass Effect should take from DA, that's for sure. I don't know why we can't "assume direct control" of our squadmates.

Well, originally you could. But some time in the development of ME1 they decided that only playing as Shepard would reinforce the whole 'Shepard's story' thing. Or so I remember it.

Personally if I'm  playing as one person I like to only play as that person, but I'm not sure it affects the game that much as a restriction the way things are right now.

CMF when squadmates get downed? hahah no. I would just tell the squadmates to hold position at the start of each mission and solo then, because their AI is retarded and it's practically inevitable that they will run into the loving arms of a Banshee at some point.

Now, if the player could be revived by squadmates a certain number of times, provided they aren't too far away, that would be nice. Killzone SP has a similar feature.

Oh, God. If you got a game over every time a squadmate fainted I never would have made it through any mission where Tali was required.

No way is that a good idea. AI are useless and if I fail because they're being scrubs, I'm gonna ragequit the game. They don't need to put their damn hands on me either. I only go down for Liara/Ashley/Miranda/Tali/Jack/Kelly/Asari Strippers on Mass Effect, not for the wussy enemies (although, maybe a phantom. She can stick her sword into me any day...  ). If anyone needs advice, here's a really old chimp...

A cookie for this man....

Republic commando's AI was outstanding. not only the enemy AI was awesome, but your companions was amazing too.

That trait in which they could still fight it out while you where downed was amazing. I usually asked them to rez me though :P

This same kind of mechanic is in the turn-based RPGs Persona 3 and Persona 4, and it's every bit as annoying there.

Thing is, having your companions revive you can be completely optional. When you get "killed", you can simply have a pop up asking you whether you want to reload or wait to see if you mates will get you back on your feet.

I'm all for a Dragon Age style system where we control all the squad mates, and the game isn't over until we all fall down.

This is gameplay decision not about fairness.

it's Game Over whenever any squadmember falls <- this would make gameplay nightmarish.

remaining squadmembers will keep fighting, even after the protagonist falls <- annoying and time-consuming if you can't control these squadmates.

If you found this annoying, you could just manually reload when the PC dropped. Except for you having to push two buttons, this would be the same as what you have now. It would even be faster since the CMF animation takes a few seconds.

It was presumably done to make it more akin to a shooter and less akin to a pure RPG. Many design changes in that vein followed X06.

I'd prefer the latter. The former would tend to encourage a high degree of micromanagement of squadmates, and combat in ME is really designed around AI control of squadmates. Also, I would like to take control of another squadmate when the MC falls.

It's a great idea.

I would like it if squad mates carried their own medi gel and can revive the PC if he/she falls in battle.  If we're all wiped then game over.

Play as Vanguard, you'll be killing enemies before your squad is even in range. Doesn't really matter who you bring, they are only along to look pretty and to make cutscenes more interesting. ^^

It would still be annoying even if you had reload option. Only system that would make sense is DA's, where you can play as your squadmates as well. Otherwise you would just look at games Al trying to shoot things to dead.
