I've become rather obsessed with the background of my female human mage Inquisitor and have been searching for more lore on the Free Marches, and Ostwick in particular. There's obviously reams dedicated to Kirkwall and a surprising amount to Starkhaven given (well what I felt anyway) Sebastian's rather minimal impact in DA2.

Yet for any human rogue, mage or warrior in DA:I - the leading character! - there is nothing about Ostwick as a place or in the history that I can see, aside from the very little you can glean in-game. Nothing about the major houses there or families, the role of Ostwick in the overall history of the Free Marches. The Free Marches in general seem to get rather little attention paid to them comparatively to other regions of the game. Yet my character comes from there and I find it strange that there isn't more of a back story available. Perhaps I have missed it? but I am on my fourth run-through and still can't find out really anything more. It would be good to have more. I'm kind of making it up as I go along which is fine to a point but there's a difference between choosing dialogue options for my mage with Josephine discussing my own family compared to the history of a whole country.

Love the game, best yet and can't wait for more. Just a bit more background would be awesome. Thanks :)

I researched a bit too, but found only one true thing of interest that caught my attention. If I'm a Trevelyan, I am related to Dorian. Lol

If you look it up on the Dragon Age wiki, you get a more extensive background on the Free Marches. Ostwick is mentioned, specifically when the Qunari invaded long ago and landed near it.

Modest in temper, bold in deed.

That's house Trevelyan's motto. Other than that, your Trevelyan's history is mainly of your own making.

As a mage, this shouldn't be too hard to create, since the Circle is mostly all you've ever known other than what you've read about. So you can choose how your circle was. My mage for example suffered some abuses from templars many years before, but that all changed eventually with help from his parents. From that point it was peaceful but boring. Through Vivienne I was also able to set my mage as being relatively older, around 44, and I was also able to imply that he was a senior enchanter by saying he and Vivienne's mentor... I think I said he didn't see eye to eye with her or that he didn't know her that well. Something like that. Some slight headcanon required. Then there was Lennea in the Gull and the Lantern who confirms that my mage was always talented and whatnot.

That's all I can really tell you about it. My warrior and rogue playthroughs aren't canon, so I just ignored most conversations related to the Trevelyans.

As for Ostwick, it's got two big walls, it's near the ocean, and your dad runs it. That's all I've read about it.

Bann Trevelyan doesn't rule Ostwick. The Trevelyans are just an important noble family there. The city is ruled by a Teyrn.

There's a banter between Blackwall and Sera where Blackwall mentions that in Ostwyck they roll cheeses.  It's culture!   There is also a mention somewhere--I think in the general "The Free Marches" codex entry--that Ostwyck is considered to be Dullsburg by most of the rest of the Free Marches--that the people there are staid, stodgy, and overall kinda boring.

IIRC when you talk to Josephine about your personal history, you can say something like "oo, interested in the eighth most important family in all of Ostwyck, are you?"

All it says about Ostwick in World of Thedas is that the qunari first landed near there when they came to the Free Marches. "The city-state's famous double walls show the effect this had on its people's nerves."

But at least it's not Tantervale. *Spits*

It's so bad that it makes Kirkwall look good ;)

Varric and Vivienne have some banter about the Free Marches and Tantervale is apparently the worst of all the city states.

Tantervale is supposedly grim and gloomy because the city and it's guards are obsessed with super strictly enforcing Chantry law. WoT says "A street urchin will get a year in the dungeon for something that will get him a pat on the back in Val Royeaux."

Which makes me think that one of the comments that a Mage Trevelyan makes about the Ostwick Circle being so boring that the Mages didn't so much rebel and rise up against the Templars, as just sort of quietly leave along with them, sounds a lot more like the "canon" fate of that particular Circle?

Does seem like compared to the other city-states, the Qunari taking over was probably the most interesting thing to happen to Ostwick in centuries.
