Nevertheless, that's not what's going on here. I can almost buy the Garrus romance, because they didn't make him more human looking in order to have Shepard involved with him. It's making aliens fit human ideas of attractiveness so people can enjoy being Captain Kirk that I take issue with.
Humanification of aliens is a very common thing in sci-fi in general.
I suspect that Garrus and Tali were not intended romances until BioWare saw how popular they were with fans in Mass Effect 1. After that, it's not like you're just going to change the appearance of an entire species. Plus, Turians are still pretty human shaped to begin with.
When it comes to a lot of female characters, we still have the tendency to want to make them sexy looking. Tali was very obviously designed that way even if she wasn't a LI yet. The ME3 collector's edition art book straight up admits that Ash's reworking was to give her "more sex appeal". Even the purely non LI characters like Kasumi, Samara, and EDI are all designed to look sexy.
That's not something that's likely to go away, since as a species we just enjoy looking at attractive people of our preferred gender. People talk about it being "horny boys" but women do it all the time too. They just don't always openly talk about it like us men do =P
