I have a problem with hypocritical people, I find them intellectually disgusting.

For example people who use a concept that is supposed to empower women to instead oppress them and dictate what they can and can't be.

Not sure how are we opressing anyone with wanting them to wear acual armor in combat instead of high heels. <_<

Yep, Game of the Year anyone?

Getting GOTY in 2014 is like bragging that you won the science fair contest because you were the only one who showed up.

Put DAI in 2015's lineup of games and see if it gets GOTY. Hell, it won't even get 2nd place in terms of WRPG GOTY with Witcher 3 and Fallout 4.

Some game had to win 2014's lackluster of a lineup gaming year where most anticipated AAA titles were DOA, might as well been DAI since at least it wasn't DOA and delivered something.

I think that what he/she is trying to say is that many feminists go around like "OMG stop oppressing me, I can wear whatever the hell I want! Let women walk outside bare chested! Blah blah!" but when they see a woman in a game/movie wearing a sexy outfit they go nuts. He has a good point and I've seen many woman do that in real life, but it does not really applies in this scenario/subject we are talking about.

Speaking of my own personal experience, I spend 8 year s in the military, and at no point did I ever have the urge to rush onto a battlefield wearing nothing but high-heels and kevlar bikini.

So you find weak and incompetent people sexually appealing?

Do you believe femininity and weakness/incompetency go hand and hand?

Why not? On many levels, Mass Effect combat is as dangerous if not more so than modern warfare. So why shouldn't all combatants be wearing armor?

Also, I thought you washed your hands of this thread.

Video games tend to follow real life in some extent. Games that aren't that realistic often get labeled as silly and immature, when games that are more realistic, are labeled as more mature and taken more seriously in general.

I don't believe that's what they're saying or implying at all.

And honestly, I think a logical flight of fancy like this can be safely referred to as a "Majestic Jazz" at this point.

Well, I think the big difference here is that a woman is deciding what she wants to wear vs. male programmers deciding what a woman should be wearing in a game. To put it at a more real world example, if I'm a woman and I decide I want to wear nothing but latex catsuits and dresses, that's cool. But if I'm dating a guy who makes me wear nothing but latex  catsuits and dresses, that's sort of a problem.

It's a complicated subject. On one hand, yes, women can dress however they choose and should not be harassed or, even worse, raped for it. That's not the point being made here though, as you intuited. Here's the thing, it's one thing for a real woman to choose how she wants to dress and another thing to be told by society that she must present a certain way. It's problematic when women are only depicted in one way by, primarily, men. And let's face it, advertising, movies, tv, video games, comics, etc usually depict women as sexy. So were sending two messages, one is that women are only valued for their sexuality and at the same time are responsible for what happens to them (rape) when they dress sexy.

How does this relate to armor in Mass Effect? Well, we're being shown that a woman's purpose is to be sexy at all times even when she's in combat. It's stupid. It's insulting. It's degrading. And, I, as a consumer of this product am going to complain. Loudly.

Yes, I admit I have seen that too and it indeed gives feminism a bad name. I thought we were talking about combat tho. But this thread turned into something else it seems.

No, but it's still immersion-breaking, and it panders to the silly notion some men have in their heads that a woman's primary goal in all situations should be being "sexy."

By the way, the argument "I don't care what they wear on the ship or in town, but if they're going off into battle" has won me over. I'm super in favor of character's dressing like their personality dictates, but I'm now in this camp.

See? You CAN change people's minds. Even on the internet!

What is this black magic :P

Then why didn't we fight the Reapers riding on dragons and swinging magic swords, armored in leather speedos and chain mail bikinis?

I mean it's a science fiction videogame setting, amirite?

You would prefer them to use the ugliest woman they can find?

I was wondering how long it would take before someone brought in rape culture... Took much longer that I had predicted.
