Why would anyone buy such trash in the first place?

I'm saying that the acquisition by Microsoft wasn't a good thing (though Bungie probably wouldn't have survived much longer anyway). It was so stagnating that the studio that resulted had to repurchase its name and run.

The death knell of Bungie as a developer of some of the best PC/Mac games was real, and happened just as people feared it would.

But some of those Bungie devs work for MS again, if I recall correctly. They've must have liked it. Kind of like Casey Hudson going to MS now. Must've had a good relationship with them.

But this is slightly off the point.

Any time somebody asks me a question I don't want to answer I'm going to respond with:

"...It's about value."

"Do you want a boy or a girl?"

"...It's about value."

"I'm not going to buy the game again just to get two DLC."

"It's about value."

lol, pretty brazen of them. Maybe they're aware that Destiny is overhyped crap that no one should buy anyway, so that's why they're so flippant.

Sounds like Dark Arisen all over again. Except Dragon's Dogma was actually worth getting.

Trying really hard to resist a joke about the People's Republic of China here.

I was going to say, DD did the same thing, but I enjoyed that game.  I can't speak for Destiny, however.

It's also an idiotic answer. It is about value: specifically the Eurogamer interviewer thinks he isn't getting value.

DD did an expansion with the original in it with an expansion price tag. Isn't Destiny doing an expansion with the original in it with a full game price tag?

No, they're selling an expansion at an expansion price tag.

They're also selling a collector's edition at a premium price, and people are whining about the CE exclusives and trying to make the argument that the collector's edition price comes from including past content (rather than being a fairly standard markup) and that they deserve some sort of discount so they can get their decals or portraits or whatever.

people who bought the game day one and have been dealing with the nickeling and diming from this terrible game should not have to buy the game again to get special content, at least not collectors edition owners. That's just terrible.

Technically he's right. People will buy stuff if they want it. The trick is to make them want it, they seem to have missed the trick.

That's every game ever made.

You can argue about CE exclusives and CE versions of expansions (which is really rare—I think mostly only Blizzard has done it in recent years), but it really has nothing to do with this particular game. You're either willing to pay for the stuff, or you aren't.

A new CE being priced at $80 is nothing unusual, and there was no version of events where you would only have to pay $40 to get all the extra stuff just because you bought into the game heavily at some earlier time (and really, if you're still playing enough to want whatever in-game crap they're shoveling, you obviously already got your money's worth—and if you don't feel that way, what are you even doing here? you don't want the content, but you're offended that you'd have to pay for it if you did?).

Technically he's right. People will buy stuff if they want it. The trick is to make them want it, they seem to have missed the trick.

Apparently, the physical CE is starting to sell out.

So I'd say they did just fine.

Am so glad this never came to PC

I'd have been tempted to buy and then very disappointed.

But it's not an answer to what the Eurogamer interviewer said. That's the issue here. He's having a conversation. When someone says they're not convinced your product has value, saying it's a question of value is meaningless.

It's just bad PR speak. He should've been drilled better on how to answer. Most AAAs are given taking points and deflect questions with regularity but this one was really bad. It's not like he was ever in the position to answer candidly and it isn't like he was the one who dictated the pricing policy. But yeah.

"Players don't think this is a good value proposition."

"We think it's good value."

"Gamers don't."

"It's about value, what players think it's worth."

The only takeaway from this is that the expansion is priced where it is simply because Bungie and Activision are greedy and want to milk the consumer.

Apparently sales figures are proving him right. It was of no value to the reporter, but many people feel it has value and have paid money for it. That's how business works. <checks to see if Luke Wilson is about to be cryogenically frozen and "Ow My Balls" has been green lit for pilot>.

Sorry, couldn't hear the Destiny interview over Halo 5 Guardians!

Honestly, if you're going to buy Destiny get the bundle for a nice, cheap price. Don't buy it now.

And to be honest, why I still play the bare bones game is beyond me. I guess it's because most of my good friends play it. I need to drop it and focus on getting better on Halo 2.

Or kick those friends out and import friends like me from abroad to play video games with!

Compare it to Borderlands 2 and its rich missions.
