I think 8 is the absolute max. Beyond that you're either getting shallow companion content or you're getting shallow quest content.

ME's selling point was the squad, even more than anything else BioWARE has done.

So I want 7 or 8. Maybe 1 DLC (but don't make me pay unless I get a kickass mission to go with it)

Six is perfect, it allows for each one to shine, for each one to be one of the classes, etc.

Seven works for me, before the inclusion of any DLC companions.

Though, I suspect that there won't be any more DLC companions.

I hope we get some fun prominent characters that aren't on our squad again, in addition to that.

6, plus two important non-squadmate characters, plus the player character = 9

and 9 is my favorite number

I have great reasons

I agree with the general consensus of 6-8. But more importantly, if the protagonist of ME:A is going to be carried over into future installments, I'd much prefer less squadmate fluctuation from game to game. Replacing almost the entire ME1 squad with all-new characters in ME2, only to have those characters play relatively modest roles in ME3 was a major mistake IMHO.

I think 6 or 7 is good. We can only bring so many people with us anyway at a time. Wouldn't mind extensive character development for less squad mates.m. I felt the 9 in DAI spread things a little thin.

I agree, though across multiple games, I suspect that a number out of the group will end up being either mutually exclusive, or be scripted to die somehow so that there's a fresh face or two in a subsequent title.

Seven.

I think Mass Effect 3 had the perfect squad size, if you include Javik. With seven you get a good mix of gameplay classes and personalities, without there being so many that some of them suffer in the content department.

Mass Effect 2 for example, with its dirty dozen, had a very little to say. None of the squadmates interacted with each other and a few them didn't even have much to say to Shepard, including a fan favorite like Garrus. (unless romanced)

Another problem I have with having a really large squad is that I end up having little or nothing for certain squad members to do. Samara and Thane were basically shelved for the entire game, and I just had Samara escort the crew in the suicide mission so that she did something. I have this thing about squad combos for missions, and I'm not fond of having such a large group, because I end up just favoring a few while the rest end up being chaff. At least with Mordin, I have a good excuse to leave him behind a lot, since he's the only recruit with a good solid reason to be on the ship. The same thing happened with Cole in Inquisition. He never went on any missions. He just lurked forever in the attic.

That usually happens to me regardless of squad size, though. Like I'll usually mess around with everyone the first time through, but then I settle on my favorites for dozens of replays. Like I can't remember the last time I deviated from Kaidan/Garrus, Miranda/Kasumi, Kaidan/Garrus, Alistair/Morrigan/Zevran, Isabela/Anders/Aveline, and Dorian/Cassandra/Vivienne. That's actually sort of a positive for having big squads so I'm more likely to have enough characters to make a team I genuinely like. If one of those three had been cut from DAO, I would have been forced to drag around someone I seriously disliked. (Although DA characters tend to make me rage more often than ME characters do.)

I agree with the forum consensus of 6-7, 6-8 range.  As someone who feels compelled to use and interact with all of my party members, I like having just enough to specialize a party for specific situations, while not having so many that I have to strain to use them all. Assuming we have the same classes moving into the new MA universe, I like the idea of having a character representing each class, with a couple of character specific abilities.  That's my favorite mix.

I actually found ME2 dealt with this reasonably well, at least on the harder difficulties. In order to complete Insanity, I found I had to take along a squad tailored to the specific mission I was doing (e.g. if there's going to be a lot of Geth, take along techies) rather than just grabbing the people I liked most. (Of course, maybe people better than me at the game can do it with any random people). Certainly there were characters I favoured, but I wasn't even close to keeping a fixed party the way I've done in...well, every other BW game. (and just to note, I think that is a very good thing, and I hope BW go back to it, instead of ME3's "everyone can just spam combos against all enemy types and win regardless")

As for the original question, yeah, somewhere in the 6-8 range is best. Gives good variety without overloading you and leaving each individual rather shallow.

Six is the magic number because it provides optimal class/power differentiation and characterization. 6 is hard enough to weave into a focused story. Every squadmember should be essential and beyond six this is almost next to impossible as the central story starts to take a backseat as you get overrun with tangent-ly related character/side plots which muddy the narrative. Keep it simple, less is more.
