This thread has restored my faith in BSN.  I was fully expecting to come in here and see a bunch people praising the ME2 approach to high heaven.  That game was the worst for me because the cast was so inflated that a bunch of the squad barely made it off the bench (outside of their recruitment and loyalty missions).

I think that 6-7 is exactly right for me.  This way everyone gets used frequently.  I prefer 6 just because it means one of each class, but I'd be fine with one (maaaaybe two more).  I think ME1 and ME3 got it right.

I also don't mind mutually exclusive characters, although I understand how people can see them as 'half-content' characters.  I liked the Ashley/Kaidan and Samara/Morinth decisions.  I also like the idea of some characters possibly dying depending on the decisions that you make.  The Wrex decision in ME1 and the suicide mission in ME2 is a good example of this.  My only issue with this is that, after the first playthrough, it becomes painfully obvious how to avoid this which makes the their death more about the player choosing to kill them.  I prefer the first type, where you have to choose between two as it means that there will always be casualties in some way.

According to the leak there's going to seven which is excellent. Less characters than the "dirty 13" mean the writers can develop them more.

I didn't know that the leak identified how many squaddies.  That's good to hear.  7 is right on point for me.  And, if that leak is accurate (which it looks like it might be), we already know a bit about two of them.  That means we've only got 5 more to uncover.

To be honest, that's my favorite part of the pre-release time on BSN:  using clues to suss out how many companions/squadmembers, who they are, and what class they are.  I love that ****.

For me the answer to the question depends entirely on the size of the game. The problem with ME2 was that the squad was too large proportionate to the game; there weren't enough missions to take everyone on.

It also depends on just how customizable the squadmates are going to be. The strength of ME2 is that each of the squadmates had a unique build; the characters who stayed on the bench were the ones that didn't complement your preferred playstyle, but each of them had a niche to fill. If the squadmates are going to be more customizable, then you don't need as many because you can spec the few you have to fill that niche.

I regardless, I would actually like something in the higher numbers. Maybe not 12, but at least 8. I want room for interesting and diverse characters, a lot of different perspectives, and a lot of aliens. I want a krogan, a batarian a geth, a vorcha, and an Andromeda native on the squad; to fit all that in and still make room for the four mandatory humans, the turian, the quarian, and the asari, that takes some doing.

I don't mind having plenty of bench warmers, really. Adds a bit of replay value, experimenting with new squad make up, getting new ambient dialogue - though ME was never really about squad banter outside of elevators.

That being said, if they do have a larger squad, I want them to expand on the mechanic from the Suicide Mission from ME2. And I have been calling for this since ME2 came out. When I'm on a mission, I have my squad, and I want to be able to assign the other squadmates to active, not sitting on their hands on the ship duty.

Hell, if they have a smaller squad, I still want that feature.

I'd say...Six...at the very least.  Having 12 might be overboard, though. Yeah.

It'd be interesting if each of the characters was representative of one of the six classes.

Two humans (for human-lovers)

...And four or more aliens for the xenophiles.

Whatever number they feel is appropriate. A different number is ideal depending on the story and shape of the game, so I can't presume whats gonna work now. I don't know enough about the game to have an idea.

Six or seven is a good number for me, though I would also like some non-squad crew to be well-developed and interactable (like the pilot or medic).

So the equivalent of ME1's crew size, plus a Joker, Traynor and Cortez. Seven squadmates with two of them being mutually exclusive would also be interesting.

Six or fewer. Quality over quantity.

Hmm, that could definitely be interesting if certain companions only joined based upon the personality type you play.

ME1 and ME3 hit a sweet spot. I'd rather they keep it small, unless we're given options to kick people or simply refrain from recruiting them a la Dragon Age.

I believe it less about numbers and more about what to do with them. ME1 had almost half the number of crewmates comparing to ME2 yet squadmates were much better developed in the second game. They were even better in ME3, where they felt more alive through interaction inside and outside the ship. That is, those who were not utterly butchered by ME3's story.

But if I had to give a number? Eight.

8 seems like a nice even number.
4 male
4 female
Only 2 humans
1 turian
1 krogan
1 asari
1 salarian
1 quarian
1 batarian

No new species in there? Naaaah

Anyway personally I care more about squad makeup than squad numbers. I'd like to see stuff like:

- diversity of all kinds

- a few new or "new" species (Andromeda natives? Unseen Milky Way species like Raloi? Unheard of Milky Way species? Hell even the token 'unique' squaddie like Legion or Javik type scenario)

- underutilized Milky Way species e.g. Batarians having a turn in a slot

- minimal humans.

Maybe 7-8 companions and 2-3 NPC crew members like Joker, Samantha, etc.

I'm hoping for six squad members and six non squad members as your inner circle. DA:I and ME3 both proved a character doesn't need to be a party member to be a successful "companion". It feels unbelievable that 90% of the people you interact with are badasses. I want more Jokers, Steves, Samanthas, Josephines, etc. People that are heroic when they need to be, but they aren't your everyday badass waking up to slap the world around.

No.

I for one want the races we already have to be fleshed out, before Bioware starts putting in new ones. I'd love a female turian and female krogan since we have never had one as a squad mate. Also a male quarian and batarian since they haven't been done yet. Wouldn't mind a drell as well, maybe not dressed like Thane for once!

Why do people want new races, when we haven't even seen all of the original races yet? I mean we didn't even get female aliens until ME3. Still haven't seen a female Batarian, volus or elcor yet. Not to mention only a handful of hanhar. Less humans, more aliens in the next game. Any new alien races will be welcome, just not as companions.

Because we're in a new galaxy, and 1 companion as a new race wouldn't hurt anything

Six or seven works really well. The major problem is there are probably going to be more species than slots, and I'd like there to be at least one new species on our crew.

1 Krogan
1 Asari
1 Turian
2 Humans (one biotic)
1 Newbie A
1 Newbie B

(In all honesty, I could do with having only one human on my squad. Quite easily.)

We can then slot the other species into non-combat roles. Doctor, Pilot, Head of Agriculture, President of the the Colony, etc. If the game really does focus on colonization, then these people will have to be important, I'd think.
