Given that Mass Effect 2 produced most of my favorite characters in the series - I have more favorite characters from the list of squadmates in ME2 than there were squadmates in ME1 or 3, I don't buy the argument that quantity/quality is an either/or issue.

I agree. For me, I was never keen on Tali in any of the three games, Jacob in ME2 and Javik in ME3. More choice is better and I would like an uneven number of squadmate possibilities (7 or 9) with 2 being mutually exclusive so we end up with 6 or 8 (preferably 8). My wanting this is pointless though because I pretty much believe the survey was real now and if it said 7 that's what we're getting. I can live with 7. I also wouldn't mind DLC characters but I know a lot of people hate the idea so it's probably not gonna happen.

After reading all the posts here it also seems that everyone hates human squadmates and wants as few as possible. I'm in the minority here but I prefer humans; or at least human looking aliens. I never warmed to Tali because I could never see her face, turian's have these rock faces, salarians and drell are just an enormous pair of black eyes looking back at you. Krogan are probably the most expressive after asari. If we have another quarian, they better not be masked or they're going to get ignored. They seems more like robots to me than EDI does.

I don't really get the human hate, but my favorite characters from the trilogy were Kaidan, Miranda, and Kasumi, so that's probably why. Anyway, if we do have exactly seven squadmates, I'm hoping for three humans.

I think 7 would be fine, but I'm not opposed to 9, either.

Start off with a lot... and don't make them so easily killable like ME2.

The good thing about a big squad is at least a few will appeal to people of all walks of life. A little something for everyone to get attached to.

Squad members are easily killable in ME2? Wow...I have to go out of my way to end up with anyone dead....

Not to me, but generally speaking, yeah. Each one of those characters (besides Miranda) has multiple "fail points". That's worse than Wrex and the VS.

And Bioware has to appeal to the lowest common denominator playthrough to continue their stories, so it ended up screwing over the ME2 squad in ME3.

If they're gonna do a cast as big as ME2's again, you need to be able to cull it a little yourself. It was just too damn big. Either the ability to kick people/refrain from recruiting people, or lock certain squadmates behind certain plot paths (which is what I think they should have done with ME2).

But actually (accidentally) hitting those "fail points" only happens if 1) you didn't play all the game or 2) you're an idiot. And even if you fall under category 1, most of the time you'll be able to get round it provided you don't fall into category 2. In which case, what's that problem with companions dying? Being an idiot should be punished.

I dunno man. I thought ME2 was pretty forgiving here. I had to basically metagame to kill people.

My first playthrough ever I got the achievement where everyone survived. It's easy, I know.

The point is that if something IS possible, then Bioware's MO is treat it as basically "very" possible. I'd rather them not shoot themselves in the foot like that this time.

Before ME3 was released, I remember reading Mac Walters saying how he regretted this... he wanted to fit in the ME2 characters more, but he said it was too much trouble to devote a lot of content to them. I'd rather they not do this to themselves this time. Not so quickly at least. That's all I mean. Make it possible to have a long "ensemble" story instead of chipping away at all the characters, to the point where they just devoted a lot of content to Liara and Garrus.

I thought the SM was so comically transparent in who you needed to send off that it was mostly a joke to figure out. It was actually the "escort the team back" choice that was the hard one.

I sent Zaeed, Tali, Samara and Mordin to escort with zero casualties.

Part of me was hoping that Zaeed made it to the Normandy alone. Just like old times.

You'd think the least proficient fighter wouldn't be the good candidate for an escort mission :P.

It's the hardest choice, but provided you make the (blatantly obvious) correct choices elsewhere, I think you can get away with using pretty much any loyal person for it.

Sadly, the most killed characters in their Infographic stats were Legion, Thane, and Jack (and Tali, I think). My favorites. Apparently 30% of players got them killed. And only 50% fully upgraded the Normandy.

Don't underestimate how bad people play. :P

If you send, for example, Garrus/Grunt/Zaeed on escort and the other two with you, Mordin dies holding he line. The same could happen Even if one of the three remained behind.
Sending Mordin on escort is the only way, I think, in saving anyone and picking Who You want in the final mission.

Not if you, say, send off Grunt. I got lucky in sending off one of my low military value peeps (can't remember who) but it was funky logic.

I want to see different alien companions than last time, but if they went with 6 total companions, and throw in an Asari, Turian, Krogan, Quarian, blah boring been there already.

So either they do 6, and drop us something new and fresh, or they give us 10+.  I would personally prefer the later, I greatly enjoyed the larger team of Mass Effect 2 over the other two games.  Just because they failed to use those companions correctly in Mass Effect 3, doesn't mean they can't make it work this time around, as long as they properly plan out the games in the series(assuming trilogy again)

Really? I'm pretty sure when I did my NOLB run (my first playthough of course) I sent someone combat related, though I forget who. I know Mordin is the safest choice, but unless you've messed up elsewhere, there's a fair bit of leeway in it from my experience.

Come to think of it, I like how they handled DAI. Some companions could be rid of, but not all of them could get killed. It's possible to see them again. While at the same time, you get a pretty big group if you go the completionist route. Especially if you count the advisors.

It depends on the combination of who you send off and take with you - if you take away high combat value ppl with you to fight the reaper sending away e.g. grunt can screw you.

I'd like no more than 6 or 7 companions and 2 to 3 support characters like Joker, Traynor and Steve.

12 companions in ME2 were waaaay too much for me, I barely even used half of them and can never even remember them all (I think of Grunt for example as "not Wrex" when I remember him at all). I also think DAI could easily lose 2 or 3 companions to develop the rest and the advisors more.

In general I'd like less but more developed companions with more content in future Bioware games.

At least 2 humans so my speciesist not-Shepard doesn't have to bring disgusting aliens around.

Other than that I don't care much, but the least Krogan/Asari the better.
