Unless there are voice commands, two is the max a console player can control. That said, I actually liked the Kinect controls.

I expect that's not true.  There are ways to assign the controller buttons more efficiently.

You're also assuming no pausing.

There are only so many buttons, we were stuck with one button being a do all action button, anyway, which hurt the PC port. Even with pausing, you are talking about extremely long pauses to go through all of the menus, and there would be zero way to to it live.

But there are combinations of buttons.

I don't understand why console games insist on using buttons one at a time.

I would like the ME2 Suicide Mission size companion list but with the ability to pick and choose who joins. If you want 5 or 6 fine, do it, if you want 12 or 13, fine it can be done. None of this "well they could have died so they are cameos" stuff again, that pissed me off bad.

Most games, including ME2 at times ask for more, but still you are adding a bunch of complexity just to add a few more live squad mates. Making more than two essentially forces you to do turn based combat, unless you are ME3 Shepherd power level where it doesn't matter.
To better answer the OP, As far as total companions go. I thought ME2 did it best, I also liked having the loyalty missions, though tying loyalty to karma level was misguided. The suicide mission idea of having a bunch of characters and assigning to roles was honestly one of the coolest ideas BW came up with. I'd like to have a large crew, where I could do that often. This would also cater to BW's best attribute, character development.

That's not the only possible benefit, though.  Getting users to accept multiple buttons (something people seem able to learn to play musical instruments) would allow vastly more complex control schemes.

My controller has over 100 buttons on it.  I hate being constrained by yours.

The more, the merrier. Id like about eighteen, which is about the max i can handle before getting confused.

Not all would need to be in your crew for the whole game, though. People could leave mid-story for whatever reasons.

Anywhere from 6 - 8.

Any more and Bioware would be spreading themselves too thin on the character content and they'll all come off as "cool" and "edgy" archetypes with shallow character progression ultimately ending up with the exact same mommy-daddy issues/revenge-tale told 12 different ways (see: ME2)

My ideal situation would be for them to write 9 different fully fleshed out characters, and only give us 6 slots on our ship that we can fill with squadmates. It would add a very dynamic aspect to the gameplay experience and narrative on subsequent playthroughs. It's what I was hoping for with ME1/ME2 squadmates in ME3. (e.g. Liara or Ash, Jack or Miranda, Ash or Miranda, Liara or Jack, Vega or Zaeed...etc)

At least 10, maybe more. ME2 had 12 and it was better for it. But..... I think 8 would be okay. ME3 only had 6 and it showed, the game was weaker because of it.

Preferably six (one of each class), but a couple more or less is good too.

Bioware probably won't do DLC characters again to avoid the on-disc controversy they've had with Javik.

6-8 is the sweet spot for me. Any more than that and I end up benching some characters for the entire game.

Basically 9:

females:

1 human
1 turian
1 asari

males:
1 human
1 turian
1 krogan
1 quarian
1 batarian

And if we're gonna get advisor-like characters (ala DA:I) then the following advisors:

1 male turian (military commander)
1 female human (ambassador/diplomat)
1 male salarian (spymaster)

That Idea I really, really like, as it allows for very easy Individualization while still offering up a bunch of different Characters.

I'd rather have only a few companions than too many.

6-8 is the least l'd want.

If we get Advisor similar to DA:I. then I'd like them to add up to around 10-12.

I like the 9/3 that DA:I gave us.

6,329,483. All of them bisexual romances. Especially the ones with tentacles.

Or I could settle for 6-8. :P

I'm not kidding about the tentacles, though!
