On topic: sorry Jack I'm not a poet myself to write a verse to answer your questions, so I'll try to explain it in a less artistic style.

The answer is: to farm challenge points, usually I can complete the 140K weapon challenge in one Plat game (provided the PUGs are not too OP) under 25 mins, for Gold game it requires two, and few Gold games can be done under 12 mins, so for better time efficiency I play Plat, also it's faster to complete the Map Mastery challenge.

Otherwise it's like what you said, boss spam and boring. When I want to finish character wave or extraction challenges I go play Gold, the easier way.

IMO, Jack's first words on the topic resonate the most meaningful part of this thread.  Majority of the other posts are fruitless, and don't carry much weight.  You're reading too much into all of this.  Maybe you need to just read less.

I don't understand the nature of farming. Why would anyone do it when they make it such a chore.

 

 

As is, for me Platinum is just the place to try OP setups and play with OP capable pugs or friends. Otherwise no way I a carrying the scrub of the scrubs on Platinum while I have no problem with this on Gold.

 

Soloing Platinum is fine too. As it's the only way fully test and push your killing effectiveness. But it leads to earlier retirement, so should be saved for last if possible. Getting too good too fast is retirement for a horde mode game as this.

are way too many players whom I encounter in gold who go in for total overkill,

killing everything in sight so fast that I barely get a chance to play. Different playstyles for different people, but for 

me, it doesn't make sense to be missiling spawns at the start of wave five. 

 

Thank goodness for the ability to ninja-switch lobbies from gold to plat while hosting; otherwise

you end up just getting really frustrated by scorewhores.

agreed. Players with the need to go overkill and try hard mode on gold should just leave and pug platinum or something. Some like myself enjoy playing gold casually.
