Uh? What? Isabella seems the butch type for sure. A masculine female character. And Sera in Inquisition deifinitely fits the butch/Masculine set up.
Isabela doesn't strike me as "butch" at all.
And Sera is more Tomboyish....not butch at all .
I don't see Isabella that way, except in certain "artworks" in the players guide and in the comics. But as far as the canon game, she's feminine.
Sera isn't that feminine, but she is girlish. She's... the gross girl.
Didn't Sera have old clothes on for the winter palace? I mean come on.
At the request of the OP i'm just gonna not post here anymore hah, too tempted to offtopic and this post doesn't really affect me.
Can we please get to the ACTUAL topic of the thread? No more need to discuss Isabela and Sera or any older character right now.
Here is an idea on how the story could work:
The mage in question is a powerful former circle-mage, who has fun killing Templars for no reason other than they were bothering her. She also has a manipulative streak and tries to get the PC to help her wipe out members of her old circle. Overtime you can try to get through to her, only for her to use you at every opportunity to gain more power. Maybe a romance could involve her starting off using you purely for "entertainment" and then she dumps you for no apparent reason, and you find out later on in the story, and she did it to not cause any problems between the two of you.
OR, y'know something like that.
I'd like a romance like this but only if she softens up later down the line (like Morrigan). I'm just not a fan of romancing evil characters or characters that don't seem to fit the Bioware's "HAPPY EVAH AFTERRRR!!!" type of romances that are almost disney like sometimes.
Though at the same time I would also love, love, love a "white mage" / healer mage romance, who has a super sweet/gentle personality.
Would be cool to have that and the dark sorceress at the same time; kinda like ying and yang ![]()

I assume that the bold would be the idea. Would also love that, especially if the "white mage" were a bi male (not that I am bi, just for those who want it).

Isabella is big and masculine for Female. She just have other assets so it's hard to see.

So edited one more time, to open up to male version of the idea as well. Felt a bit sexist, personally. So post ideas on either gender of the power-hungry, dark, sinister mage.

After almost having a blood mage in your party in DAO, I think a mage like that would be perfect, but the one thing that DA games lack is a Dwarf LI!

That's not masculine. ![]()
That's not masculine.
Isabela has a sort "masculine" personality, but physically she's pretty hyper feminine and I can't really see any ground for arguing otherwise.
I know that she's canonically 'dead' in the comics, but I still think that if we ever end up in Antiva, Yavana would be a great companion and possibly a bisexual romance option. She might tick off a few of the requests from the OP. She's very feminine (physically, she's a bit like if Morrigan was styled by Isabela). She's 'power hungry' to an extent. She's certainly darker than the other f/f options have been. And, given that she's a Witch of the Wilds and Flemeth's daughter, I don't think it would stretch belief too much for her to have survived the events of the comics in some way. It's a bit of a stretch, but I think there's something there.
Please, no more characters that were introduced in the EU. It's lazy, I don't want to go and buy some novel or comic to know about the characters in my party. I wasn't a fan of Cole being a companion, and i'd rather Bioware created a new character than put Yavana, Maevaris or any other character from the EU in there.

Not really into having 'dead' characters coming back to life, but whatever.
No she wasn't.
I just remember reading that her concept art was supposed to be darker. So I think she was planned to be a scarier character at first, to fit with being a blood Mage. I actually like what they did with her instead, though.
Yeah, I think Bioware made the right choice in characterizing Merrill as they did in DAII. Having her just be a stereotypically evil and power-hungry blood mage would have felt too much like a cliche, and removed a lot of the ambiguity and nuance that really made her work as a companion. Besides, she brought some genuine warmth and levity to DAII, which the game really needed at points.

WIth the possible exception of Nyree, I can see where you're coming from. There's an unfortunate tendency (at least in a lot of video game franchises) to have much of the major character development and plot points taken place in tie-ins or transmedia installments, like novels and comic books, rather than in the core games themselves. There's no excuse for skimping out on the main story just because you can elaborate on any details elsewhere.
Les is more?
Why does he have to be gay? How about the well written character open to all? Should that characteristic top all others?
We have a gay Mage in Dorian already. Everyone else is bisexual.

Because that's what the OP is asking for, that's why?
Besides, s/he also originally was more interested in a female character for this type, which we've not had for f/f options. See the quotes of the OP before it was edited. It was for a feminine f/f character that fit this type. Dorian has nothing to do with that. Plus, Dorian's hardly a 'power-hungry' mage.
Also, what does "Everyone else is bisexual" mean? M/M options? So what? So because Dorian's gay, that's it? No other characters should be gay males because that box has been ticked?
I think a female Anders could work, but only as root and concept. Some personality changes would be necessary to make it "power hungry" enough. I'd definitely go for an anti-hero like Anders than a cliche villain type. Just look at all the reactions people have towards Anders, negative or positive, it shows the character was successful.
Its no coincidence that I liked every single mage LI Bioware has thrown at me, regardless of gender. So I somewhat understand what OP wants.
Maybe a female Qunari would do? Tortured since she was a child, she learned every bit of forbidden magic she could. But she still thirsts for more.
I posted in the what companions would you like to see thread that I'd like to meet a female Tevinter mage. I prefer complicated characters, so she could be chaotic good (which is not really what the OP wants, but I like the "hardening" idea so that a character can go different ways). The Tevinter nobles are wonderfully scary:
It'd be great to have a mage who'd never been under the influence of the Templars and is more sophisticated and competent than Merrill. I'd love to see this for a male mage as well. Dorian's great, but he's a little too goody two shoes for me, and while Vivienne is sophisticated, she's just mean and not charming at all.
A female Saarebas is one of the most-requested characters. You could also have a wild female Avvar shaman with the skull facepaint!

Yeah, that was a poor decision on gaider's part. If he wants to write books, cool, but I shouldn't have to read them just to play the game series.
His politics already override his storytelling in DAI, I don't really want to read them as well.
