What is with the perception that the Talon isn't that powerful a character without Cain Mines?

Because people can't look past the absurd damage that Cain Mines do. After playing around with the Talon quite a bit, I've settled on a no fitness build with Arc Pistol, so I can get the utility of both arrows as well as the spike damage of the mines.

Plus the heavy melee aimbot is good too.

No fitnees. What madness. I glitch him all 6 and do whatever I want.

I can't get HTH challenge points with his Omni-Bow, so I hate him. Also, Jason Voorhees slasher film mask.

I think he should have been arrow only, and Cain could have been something like "Explosive Arrows."  Granted, I really only like AP arrows now, but you could rework the bow so it doesn't have an AOE attack possible at base, and that would be what the explosive ones are for.

I find the ragdoll from Concussive Arrows to be somewhat irritating.

Cain mines are just so stupidly broken that most people (not BSN) can't fathom playing him without them. Melee build archer is pretty great I would use it, but the key rebinding bug on PC is a pain.

Cain mines are perfect the way they are, if you use them like they're intended to. To protect a team's flanks. I don't get how anyone could hate them if they're used as a defensive power only. The infamous spammers of Cain mines are just assholes. Just kick them. I honestly wish there were more powerful powers in the game.

You can't kick them. All other players in a room will have to kick as well, and they won't know what you're doing since there's no text chat.

Thats mostly why I left. I could smell lamers a mile away and couldn't avoid playing with them.

Yeah, putting something that is brokenly OP into a game and then just expecting people to not use it is really poor design. Things like that only fly in this game because it is PvE. I've no idea how the Merc even ever got past any sort of playtesting unless they just don't have it. He's not like the GI where you at least have to be able to aim well to truly break the game.

Oh, I forgot, they playtest on Silver. Merc probably isn't any better than most other grenade kits there because everything already dies in one hit from all of them.

Because off-host his arrows only hit enemies a third of the time.

He still can OSK most infantry in the game and dispense of anything armored very, very quickly. I get the low health makes him more difficult to play and the key binding is bullshit but the guy gets dismissed to easily as a one trick pony. AP arrows are one of the best abilities in the game and if not for the completely ****** broken Cain Mines maybe they would get more love. He is still one of the quickest armor killers in the game even if you completely disregard Cain Mines.

Can you explain the key binding issues for us console peasants?

Did you ever watch any of the Developer demo videos?  Only one of the devs was even good at this game.

Why are they a-holes? This is a team game, where the goal is to kill people as fast as possible. If someone wants to spam them, take the credits.

What percentile of characters / builds are we considering powerful?

This

From what I can tell, about half the content in this game is 'OP'. I try to come up with a small list of OP stuff and it ends up being this huge list, with the majority of content ranging in OPness depending on match set ups.

I have only played the Merc a couple times, and I'm probably doing it wrong, but this is how I do it:

http://kalence.drupa...!34G51313!85GE5

Legal missile glitching .. although I still haven't really gotten my timing down with him, so only the first spawn of each wave dies en mass

Edit: Oops, I stuck the wrong mod on that gun, supposed to be an extended mag there, using AP ammo, I don't need the AP mod

You think requiring better aiming skills makes us peasants. The gaming world also revolves around consoles and sloppy seconds PC ports. So were's still at the centre of it all. So cheer up and feel good you don't have to play games with mice and typing apparatus because devs are that lazy in their PC ports (BioWare included).

I actually remember, when they streamed a gameplay on FBW to introduce the Reckoning kits, AIU, PUGgernaut...etc on SILVER.

The struggle was delicious.

Bah, he sucks with or without them, really...

Meh, I mean Cain mines are ****** broken. I won't argue that but what if BW took away the Drell's cluster nades.

Exactly! And Cain Mines were designed to be a defensive power. Bioware should have limited the number of Cain Mines - and - not have it where one explodes if a fourth mine is activated. That way, they could never be spammed. This would lead to a different playstyle...one that's not going to result in lots of hatemail.

The detection on them would need to be tweaked as well. They sometimes don't work properly.

Yes, I remember watching it live and couldn't believe it. That and a BioWare dev even said they test and balance everything on Silver difficulty. Silver. Difficulty. Not a typo.

While I don't really see how that's relevant, they pretty much did that for some months, before GC was released. And Drell were still effin' amazing! B)

Although not everyone agreed, back then :P

It might have had a part in it. But the biggest reason has always been... Just because they're awesome

The problem with Drell at first is most people played them like dumbasses. Movement speed is their wheelhouse but a lot of people stood around firing like they were soldiers. Venom made them even more easy mode on Plat even, wide AOE stagger, spike damage, and priming.

People like to spam what's broken. AP arrows and Concussive arrows are extremely effective and capable of making the talon merc viable against any threat, but they do seem lackluster compared to the cain mine making the talon look meh in the eyes of the power gamer used to his mines. I haven't had the no damage off host issue (if I read a previous post correctly) as a problem, but it does seem like sometimes you might as well use no fitness as he gets dropped even with max health fairly quickly. Might just be perception but an individual's perception is their reality.
