With specific regards to the inevitable asari, I want her to have a personality unlike the various asari we've seen thus far. We've seen the naive bookworm turned calculating bookworm of Liara, the succubus temptress of Morinth, the cold justicar of Samara, the haughty likes of the Citadel representative, the utterly insane of Benezia, the mob boss Aira, and the gruff half-krogan of Liara's mom (forget her name). You know what we haven't seen? An asari tomboy - not too gruff, not too bossy, not too crazy, but not really naive, cold, or even playing up her sexuality. Haughty? Maybe a little, but more in the "overconfident and headstrong" way than the "we've dismissed that claim" or "alpha b*****" varieties. Basically, I'm hoping for an asari Rainbow Dash.
Ideal squad makeup?

An Asari Vanguard, like Aria who's a renegade and has her own agenda.
Salarian STG like Kirrihe. Who I may have to decide to sacrifice in a heroic "Hold the line" mission.
Female Turian Sentinel , in a long term relationship with a female Krogan
Female Krogan Soldier, who is with the female Turian and eventually leaves the squad after getting pregnant.
Human Male Engineer, Leader of the Ark Project with whom the PC must defer to and gay LI.
Human Female Infiltrator, sort of like a female Joker. I want her to be my PC's long time best buddy.

Human Male Engineer, Leader of the Ark Project with whom the PC must defer to and gay LI.
That's basically the character I've had rumbling around in my head too. Something along the lines of someone who's in charge of the science department of the Ark Project. I don't know if I'd want the protagonist to have to defer to him, but definitely someone who is in no way a subordinate outside of combat.

Also given the fact that our characters are in professions where they could die tomorrow. I think casual flings with no strings attached should be available as well, although I'm certain this would really upset certain vocal people in 'murica.
We know pretty much that one of the squadmates will be Krogan - this from the trailer. So presumably the Ark leaves just before Wrex finds out that Shepard sabotaged the cure, and withdraws support. And even if he did know, I doubt he'd withdraw totally to Tuchanka. He'd get as many of his people on the Ark as he could before he went after Shepard.
So there you have that.

Here's how I'm breaking it down. I like the idea Feybrad had, but I don't think advisors and the type work for a game like this. That was good for an organization, but not for a military ship.
Party Members
(Doesn't Count) - The Red Shirt who dies in the first mission. A bright bubbly personality who gets killed rather quickly. Imagined as an asari, just to throw off suspicion since ME1 and ME2 were human men.
1.) Space Bond - A suave, smooth talking human male (white skin, blond hair, from USA, small scar) with a smooth talking personality, and a love of a few good jokes. An infiltrator skilled with a sniper rifle, and some minor tech powers based on disabling his opponents, like Sabotage and Damping from the first game. Romanceable by women
2.) The Straight - A female turian (masked with black face paint) who is stern, and listens to orders. Believes in the "spirit' of the team, and the mission. Tries to connect when she wonders about the true motivations behind everything. But in the end, steadfast and loyal, believing in the turian way. Turns down promotion because she feels she is not ready. Soldier type with assault rifles and shotguns, and various offensive buffs like ripping through armor or shields. Romanceable by men
3.) The Pragmatic - A salarian male (females are dalatrasses) (Green skin, mottled complexion) from STG, who believes honor and nobility are quaint notions, and has no problems being ruthless for the mission. He likes sneaking around enemy lines, sabotage, and intelligence gathering. Believes in the wheel of life, A descendant of one of the last members of the League of One. Uses light weapons, can cloak and uses heavy-hitting techs like Incinerate and Neural Shock. Not romanceable, but can become a good friend.
4.) The Mad Scientist - A brilliant asari matron (turian father, so light facial marking. Skin is almost turquoise with cerulean marks) who spent her maiden years as a huntress, but quickly discovered a love of scientist when she met a salarian working as an Eclipse sister. That salarian became her bondmate, and she soon abandoned the life of a merc in order to create many new innovations and inventions, naming a few in honor of her bondmate, who soon passed. She creates many of the things that new colonies in Andromeda will need, and likes field testing her work. Uses light weapons and has a mix of tech and biotic attacks. Romanceable by either male or female
5.) Space Indiana Jones - Human female (Colonist but Middle Eastern descent) who signed on for the adventure and helped finance the Andromeda mission. A dreamer who loves the idea of exploring new lands and new civilizations, believing the future of the world is among the stars. A biotic who always found herself bullied due to biotic misconception as a child, signed on for some military training due to incentives and to see the galaxy. Uses assault rifles and offensive biotic powers like Warp. Romanceable by men
6.) The Scout - Drell male who worked as a scout under the Compact, but served a hanar who thinks drell are second-class citizens, who tasked him to go on the mission, because the hanar wants all the credit for it. Believes in a form of siari mixed with the ancient drell religion. Wants to find a future for the drell, for them to thrive on a world away from Kepral's Syndrome. Uses a mix of defensive biotic powers such as Barrier and Throw combined with a shotgun, as well as a scouting drone. Romanceable by women.
7.) The Tech - Quarian male who was a scholar of the mass relays, (dark green suit) and used their technology to help create better mass drives for starships, which was his Pilgrimage gift. His brilliant mind has been sought after by militaries and people of a less savory nature, and he's had to learn to defend himself. Absent-minded to the point of silliness, but incredibly sociable, polite, and loves talking about quarian history. Has a mixed view on the geth, thinking that the Morning War was inevitable. Uses light weapons, and has tech powers focused more on synthetic opponents, such as Overload or Hacking. Romanceable by both men and women
8.) The Mercenary - A batarian female with a dim view of other races, thinking they are only valuable for their money. (slightly red skin tone) A firm believer in the batarian way of life, including slavery and the caste system. She will educate about batarian life, but from a point of superiority. Skilled with weaponry and believing in overwhelming force and getting paid to it. Worked as a member of the Hegemony, and would never admit it, but left her world because it was too busy fighting itself.

This is my favorite kind of thread.
Mysterious A.I. companion. Not a geth, a hardware based entity with a complicated history. Slightly mutable form. This time, we aren't helping them find their place in the universe, or come to terms with it. In fact, this character is more interested in helping us, both the protagonist in specific and organics in general. They're ultimately very altruistic. They might even play the role of a sounding board for the character. If anything, they're our therapist instead of the other way around. Sentinel Class.
Roguish human mercenary. He's hardened, jaded, a bit of a scoundrel. His biotics attacks are all red colored, for reasons. Vanguard class.
The other empathic species. An Andromedan species--new to us--with some powers of mental manipulation. There is some question as to whether this character is entirely trustworthy. Infiltrator Class.
I just want a friendly, grounded female human soldier companion. She could be warm and fun. Give us a female character who fits into a military or paramilitary role with easy camaraderie. Soldier Class.
The more gentle Krogan. Remember that adorable "little" Krogan in ME2 who was sitting around "like a Quarian with a tummy ache"? I want a Krogan "runt" with a relatively sweet personality. Engineer Class.
Asari unlike any we've had before. That's really all I've got, though I am partial to the "good" Ardat Yakshi concept. Adept Class.

2. Vorcha
3. Batarian.

Slightly baffled by the amount of thought everyone's putting into this...
I don't care. Give me 8~ squad mates with interesting personalities, a range of talents, and very big guns and I'll be happy. One of the awesome things about Mass Effect is not knowing who you're getting - remember how great it was the first time you met Legion? Would it have been the same if you'd already known all about him? No? Didn't think so.

I don't think anyone here is even pretending to have any actual knowledge about the upcoming ME:A. Just speculation to pass the time. Personally, I love seeing what other people want out of their next squad. I hadn't even thought of a Batarian companion, but now that a few people in this thread mention it, I kind of want to see one now.

Asari Infiltrator - Carries a M-98 Widow or your favorite shotgun. She's a Commando. Deconstruction of the blue space babe. Total cynic and isn't afraid to speak her opinion. Cusses. Also is attractive and is a Romance Option. Will be appreciative of gifts like weapons and armor upgrades. Must be voiced by a contralto like Claudia Black.
Female Turian Cabal. (not a romance option) - whatever class Nyreen was with the modifications for ME:Andromeda
Salarian Engineer (not a romance option)
Krogan Sentinel (not a romance option)
Human Vanguard (female) - romance option (bi)
Human Soldier (male) - romance option (bi)
Andromedan Alien squadmate Adept. (male and similar to human, romance option and bi)
Sorry about the lack of quarians, but we here at Bioware take your choices seriously and you could have killed the Quarians on Rannoch. Also the Batarians are toast, although I really liked their voicing in the trilogy.
Seems interesting, but 4 bi romance options? Please no. This kind of solution reminds me of DA2.
As to other suggestions, I certainly hope for new alien squadmates.
We are in a new galaxy after all.

Ideal squad? ok:
- Human male - vanguard (straight)
- Human female - infiltrator (straight)
- Krogan - male - sentinel (not a LI)
- Quarian - male - soldier (bi)
- Asari - female - adept (bi)
- AI like EDI/Dr.Eva - female - engineer (bi)
- Andromeda species* - male (not a LI or bi)
- Andromeda species* - female (not a LI or bi)
The ship's crew:
- Pilot - Human - female (f/f)
- 2nd Pilot - Turian - male (bi)
- Machinist - Human - male (m/m)
- Doctor - Salarian - female (not a LI)
*eventually add one of them to the ship's crew (maybe as navigator)

Let's assume the "seven party members" and "Ark Contingency" theory is true.
Two Human Sentinels at the beginning of the game. They are both medics with very different personalities. The one that is the same gender as your PC dies in the prologue:
1) Female Human Sentinel. Straight love interest.
or
1) Male Human Sentinel. Straight love interest.
The throwbacks: Four squaddies from alien races we already know and love.
2) Male Krogan Sentinel. Hey, not all krogan HAVE to be front-end fighters. Not a medic. Only a few decades old.
3) Asari Infiltrator: A hardnosed huntress in the matron stage. Yes, all asari are biotic, but who says they all need to be biotic enough use it in combat? Lesbian love interest, not bisexual, just to throw people off.
4) Male Quarian Soldier: Unfortunately, not voiced by Adam Baldwin. Still a badass adorable mofo, though. Bisexual love interest, because reasons.
5) Female Turian Adept: Because the people demand female turians. Some kind of biotic martial artist. Bisexual love interest, because the people also want to bang female turians.
the newbies: Two squaddies from the Andromedan races.
6) Female Andromedan Engineer: No idea.
7) Male Andromedan-of-a-different-species Vanguard: No idea.
The crew:
1) Male Turian Co-Pilot. He's not the funny one. Gay love interest, because reasons.
2) Female Human Co-Pilot. She's the funny one.
3) Male AI Navigator: Robot human-like body. Bisexual love interest.
4) Male Yeoman. Not bangable for the first time in the series. Probably dies if you screw things up.
5) Female Human Xenobiologist. A space expedition should have one. Bisexual love interest.
6) Female Human Mechanic. A cranky old lady.
7) Female Elcor Doctor. A skilled surgeon. Comedic relief.
8) Male Vorcha Custodian. Who let the vorcha in the Ark Contingency? Who cares, probably the salarians, anyway it's funny.

If the Khet are going to be antagonists in this game, then give me a Ket companion. Don't pull a geth and wait till the next game to make them nuanced and interesting. From the bat, portray both the good and the bad about them.

*Racks brain* Honestly I don't have much preference as long as they're interesting. Here's a few rattling ideas instead.
How about an asari that's not naïve (Liara), bookish (Also Liara), cold (Samara), a space succubus (Morinth), or haughty (Most other Asari)?
I'd like to have a Vorcha on the crew, squadmate or not. Maybe a Batarian. They could have interesting perspectives.
I'd also like to see a Krogan that's not into the ultraviolence (Or less so anyway), maybe a scientist.
A female turian squdmate?
I guess I just want stuff we haven't seen before.
