Perhaps you should ask yourself why any developer would sensibly want to make a game where you're the Spanish Inquisition? It's like wanting a WW2 game where you're the Waffen SS.

There is nothing wrong with making a game where you're part of an inquisition similar to the Spanish Inquisition. I'd actually quite like that.

There is also nothing wrong with a WW2 shooter where you're part of the German army or the Waffen SS. In fact after having Germans as cannon fodder for over 30 years now (with no one batting an eye over it, we're quite good at dehumanizing the enemy and Germany was the enemy in WW2 after all) I'd say it's about time we'd get a shooter where we're playing as Germans shooting American/British/Russian soldiers.

Usually I connect more with male characters, so in my first playtrough, I will roll a male. Especially since there will be gay romances, so I'm definitely trying that first.

That being said, I just don't know why everyone likes Jennifer Hale so much. I just couldn't stand playing femshep because of that deep manlady voice >_<' When I roll female characters, I want them to actually look and sound feminine, otherwise I'm just replaying my male char in a skirt (no offense to lesbian girls, but I want variety here). That's why I loved Alix Wilton Regan, the british voice for the fem!inquisitor, and Jo Wyatt as Fem!Hawke. If we got another Jennifer Hale, I most likely will play this only with a male char.

I will do a bunch of play-throughs as both sexes. Eventually I'll prefer one voice actor over another and stick to that sex.

Edit: Regardless of my sex, I mostly always played a male Shepard because I don't like Jennifer's voice in ME. Other games? Sure, but I prefer Mark way more when it comes to ME.

You got it backwards. It's the other way around. Masculine and feminine traits are not assigned to men and women respectively, it's the other way around. We assign certain traits as masculine traits because they appear more often and more dominant in men (and vice-versa for feminine traits and them appearing more often in women).

Independence, aggression, assertiveness, etc. are considered masculine traits because they're dominant traits in men.

Empathy, gentleness, sensitivity, etc. are considered feminine traits because they're dominant in women.

Yes, there are always exceptions (but exceptions prove the rule) and no, I'm not saying women can't be aggressive or men can't be sensitive, they most certainly can and there is nothing wrong with that. I'm just saying that these traits appear more often and more dominantly in men and women respectively.

You do know that "prove" in that phrase actually means "test", and implies that the existence of exceptions should cause the rule to be examined closer to see if it should be a rule at all, right?

Except the Waffen SS were not regular soldiers, and were quite involved in atrocities and local genocide, might as well make "Auschwitz Simulator 2015".

The Waffen SS are quite like regular soldies, except they had the extra duty to keep law and order and functioned as a police force for the German Empire. You'd be surprised how many "innocent" people were part of the Waffen SS, having absolutely no clue what was really going on inside the camps and legitimately believed that they were doing the right thing.

I'm not sure if there is an English translation, but if there is, I'd advice you to read the book 'Montyn' by Dirk Kooiman. It's an autobiography about Jan Montyn, a Dutch farmer who ended up in the Waffen SS at a very young age and who fought the Russians in Courland for a long time. Only at the very end of the war did he and his platoon learn the truth about WW2 and turned themselves in to the American soldiers. Only during their trial did they learn that Hitler was systematically killing Jews and other minorities in their camps.

Not all people in the SS were bad guys, and it would actually be super interesting to see a game from the perspective of an "innocent" SS soldier.

Some women have lower voices. It doesn't make them men and women are more than their voices. Also I don't know how you are combining deep voices, men in skirts (drag queens?) and lesbians together. That sounds pretty messy.

Jennifer Hale definitely sounds feminine in ME. Not even remotely masculine. Your male in skirt comment is puzzling, as is your mention of lesbians.

What you are asking for is a higher voice then, maybe something more girly?

So you want all the flavor of a game about the Spanish Inquisition or Waffen SS, but none of the meat?

*edit: This it totally off-topic now lol, we should probably move this to a new thread...

Male, unless there's a really hot lesbian chick I can romance.

Yes, I'm that shallow.

There's no point in sugar coating it man, it's best just to be honest. If there's an amazing lesbian romance(preferably with a human female since I'm really not a fan of shacking up with aliens), then I will be all over it once I finish a couple of playthroughs with the male protagonist.

Female and I'll probably try and have her look like me. Then my second playthrough as a male. If the class system in the trilogy still remains, then I'll be an Adept and then an Engineer respectively.

I want both, but there really is no point in just playing a pure evil bad guy. There is no conflict in that, no drama. Playing a bad guy who believes he's doing good and doing the right thing is much more interesting.

And yes I agree. This is an interesting discussion though. Maybe I should make a thread about it.

Interesting. I get the feeling that some people may not have spoken to a lot of women throughout their lifetime to believe that Hale's voice is in any way masculine.

Jennifer's natural voice is actually gentler and lighter than her badass video game voice. Her Totally Spies's Sam and Cinderella voice (yes, that's FemShep singing) is nearer to her real voice.

I actually like women with deep voice. I'm mid-20s and I still sound like a teenager... maybe I should take up a smoking habit or something.

She acted as Mandy too. It was so confusing when I first found out about it. Her annoying laughs haunted me since I was as a teenager.

Female. I always play female in all games if I have a choice.

I don't really know why.

I have heard rumors of players that pick a male Shepard, btw. I think it's just rumors.  :P

Depends on the hair selection in the character creator.

Female. If the game offers me a gender choice, I always pick my own gender.  I have plenty of opportunities otherwise to play males, since 99% of the time in games with a set protagonist, that protagonist is male (typically a white, scruffy, bearded, brown-haired male, at that). And while I have greatly enjoyed my time playing some of those guys, it's really nice when I can slip into the pixelated skin of a character of my own gender.

Actually, most of my friends are girls, and I know what one sounds like thank you very much. But I have to admit, my previous post does sound confusing and I apologize for that.

What I intended to say is that when I roll a girl character,  I want her to sound girly. Though but feminine. I like female characters like Arwen or Eowyn (From LOTR) Merida (Brave), Samus (metroid - yes she uses a catsuit but apart from that, she is not sexualized ), Lara Croft (from the last reboot) and Katniss (hunger games). That's the kind of woman I like to roleplay when I make female characters, maybe trowing a little spice making them evil (or good that does shady things).  And that was what aways turned me off from femshep. To be fair, the problem wasn't just the voice, was the fact that bioware didn't bother to make different animations for the two genders. In all the cutscenes, Femshep acted exactly the same way as broshep, completely manly. Yes the same thing happened in dragon age, but just in the cutscenes, in game the females didn't move like the males, and the softer voices helped.

I think that part of your problem with FemShep is that she wasn't a young girl, she was a full grown, full blown, grizzled veteran of the galactic special forces.

In that regard Jennifer Hale was pretty spot on in how she played FemShep.

Hale's voice is nowhere near masculine, but the voice she did for Femshep is a couple of octaves lower than her real voice, and you can really tell at times because it sounds off, especially during her Renegade dialogue in ME2 when she was trying to sound like a badass, it just didn't sound natural, so I can see where people are coming from with the voice thing. Even then she still sounds nowhere near like a guy.

For me it's gonna depend on how well they do the default PC for female. I only really like using the default, and I didn't like the model for femshep all through M1 to M3, and the ME3 one looked nothing like what they had on the cover. If its well voice acted I'm gonna go female, I chose male for Mass Effect 1-3 and I could never get into the female story just due to the voice and appearance. Not saying Jennifer Hale is a bad voice actor, she did amazing, I just don't like the sound of her voice personally lol.

Well, maybe a little. I like making young characters in general (as you can see by my avatar pic, even my broshep look like he is in the middle 20s), but that was not my problem per see. I just wish bioware fixed the cutscenes for the diferent genders, not just make one for the males and reuse every situation for the females. They did this a little in ME1, the scene in chora's den were you meet the drunk c-sec guy (forgot his name), and of course, the romance. But in ME3 (never played ME2 with a femshep) I've seen no scene like this (apart, again, from the romances).

And as I said, the deep voice really turned me out. Maybe if the tone was a little softer - like she did for Lightining in FFXIII - I would enjoyed playing femshep more. But, in the end, is just a matter of taste lol. If they give two voices for us to choose like they did in inquisition, I guess everyone will be happy.
