I could do either/or. My first is male though
Will you play as M or F?

My player characters will be female. I don't see the character as representing me but rather see myself as something of the Jiminy Cricket in the relationship. I'm the little guiding voice offering direction, saying who should die first and who to help. As for how this relates to a female character. I simply find helping a lady more enjoyable than I find helping another male.

No clue what SJW is.
Nevertheless, I play both male and female protagonist.
I roll a male character for my first play through. Then, getting tired looking at my butt, I roll a female character from then on. Of course, if Quiet was a playable character, you know which butt I'd be looking at (that's a deliberate shot for all the negativism directed at her by the morally superior).

1st and primary playthrough will be male. After that I'll most likely eventually playthrough with all available classes and have an even mix of male and female.

Depends on the VAs. If the male doesn't sound like a plank this time, both.

Male I am male, I feel weird playing otherwise. If the male VA was really bad I might change hat but I'm not sure. For ME it worked out for me as I preferred Meer by a large margin in all 3, I actually never liked Hale in ME. Her vocal intonations didn't really gel with how I felt the character would do those scenes. Meer for me nailed a somewhat stoic soldier evolving into a team leader with more empathy.

Female. I always play as a woman first and foremost whenever I have the option. However, I'll probably give the male character a shot eventually as always. While I prefer to play my own gender, I don't play it exclusively.

I'll do a female runthrough for each class. I'll play through once as a male (with whichever class I liked best) just so I can say that I have.

Unless, and until, I've done at least a few play-throughs playing a female is the only thing I will play because... well... I am one and enjoy not being forced into somebody else's box for a roleplaying game. Otherwise, it would be a shooter, or something equally non-immersive. It's not a matter of social warrior, or something such. It's a matter of what sort of hero can I relate to or see myself being in the sort of roleplay that is... roleplaying.
Once I've gotten my fill of attacking every angle I can, then I'll push my RP limits a bit and see if I could play a non-stereotypical male role; or how I would imagine/want a non-stereotypical male to be... less thinking with my guns and my bits.
(Yeah, I know someone'll give me flack for that last one. File 13... round one in the corner behind the desk)

Male. I will most likely never play as female because otherwise I just don't feel a connection between me and my character.
Good post i agree, ill never understand how people can play the opposite gender and call it role-playing. Its weird an says alot of the person doing it.

I always play as Female when given the choice. Why? well because I am female. ![]()

It's playing the role of someone else. Role-playing. What you mean is making a self-insert.

A total tossup for me. Which voice actor I like the best may be a deciding factor. Unless the game is horrible, or commits a train wreck of an ending similar, or close to what ME3 "achieved", I'll probably end up playing at least two playthroughs, one with either sex.

to date I have only played female in a M or F game twice. once for Traynor and once for Sera. This is simply because I loved those characters more than most of the male options.

I haven't decided yet. But I prefer not to make all of my protagonists identical -- especially those existing in the same fictional universe.
I don't want my Pathfinder to be the living reincarnation of Commander Shepard in everything except tone of voice. lol
