VA matters more for me. I need to be impressed by the VA, generally. But in terms of gender, most likely female will be my pick.
yeah I think that's kind of why most of my playthrough's so far have been female in DAI as I was really impressed with how well Alix did as the Inquisitor.
Commander Shepard has always been a male to me, just always has been, but maybe because I'm a guy. I have tried playing as jane in Me3 but after having carried Mr Shepard through the three titles dozens of times I couldn't get over the change.
As with every BioWare game I've played before it, my first playthrough will be with a male character and the second will be with a female. I'll then base future playthroughs on what I want to get out of them, and what I enjoyed more.
Balding male to role play myself unless default ME:A protagonist is another cast model & voice actor since that's kind of ME's thing and on a similar thought I'll likely use the default male Fallout 4 for the first play through.
I never actually thought Jennifer Hale was THAT much better than Mark Meer, in fact I think some people were being disingenuous over how good she was. She honestly sounded bored with the way she delivered some of her lines. Her acting range was either this mumbling or whispering tone of voice.
I mean skip to 5:50 and listen to the way she delivers that particular line:
It really sounds like she's fighting sleep while she's talking.
I'm not saying Hale turned out a bad performance, and I know it comes down to personal preference, but this whole attitude people had back in the day that Femshep was "The True Shepard" or that Hale was amazing and Meer sucked, really bothered me. Plus I honestly thought Mark Meer did a great job.
Ahglock, Tyrannosaurus Rex, dragonflight288 et 2 autres aiment ceci
I like having a personal connection with my characters, so it would be a refreshing change to play a female protagonist for the first time in a new game.
My standard mode for the last number of BioWare games is; Game one, male goody two shoes. Game two, female snarky beotch. (Am playing a nasty snarky elf rogue in my second DAI play through right now.)
I'm female and I usually play as male first for the eyecandy, then I play a second time as female.
I'm male but thats why I like playng a female sometimes for the same reason a bit of eye candy for me. I 've got DVD's of the Buffy series and Charmed which have kind of kick ass girls in them fighting the vampires/demons and that. So being able to create a sexy kick ass girl of my own is one of the things I love about Bioware's games. Especially if she's a mage or a biotic

I wouldn't go so far as to say people are being disingenuous. I don't think Meer is terrible, but among all of the voices he actually does for various characters in the game, his role as Shepard leaves me the coldest. It just doesn't resonate with me. I don't ascribe to the "One True Shepard" idea, at least insofar as I only consider her such for my own personal canon. I consider the divide between the voices of Hawke to be much smaller. I think Boulton does a better job of M!Hawke than Meer does for Shepard.
I disagree with you about Jennifer Hale in regards to her voice acting and acting range but in regards to Mark Meer, I believe he was told to give a very stoic performance and I consider it to be a well-done performance for the most part.
The reason I believe he was told to deliver the voice in the way he did is because I consider him to be capable of delivering quite different performances such as the voice he gave Jethann and Hybris respectively in Dragon Age II.
