It was strange that this "play M/F" always crop up all the time. Just play whoever you want.

Its funny that I always get responses like "I can't play a woman since I'm a macho man and it doesn't feel right to play a woman" with Mass Effect and then in SWTOR, apparently every female character is always being played by a guy and there's no such thing as female gamers. There's no way to please everyone is it?

I never actually thought Jennifer Hale was THAT much better than Mark Meer, in fact I think some people were being disingenuous over how good she was. She honestly sounded bored with the way she delivered some of her lines. Her acting range was either this mumbling or whispering tone of voice.

I mean skip to 5:50 and listen to the way she delivers that particular line:
https://www.youtube....h?v=DbNNlOiPbPk
It really sounds like she's fighting sleep while she's talking.

I'm not saying Hale turned out a bad performance, and I know it comes down to personal preference, but this whole attitude people had back in the day that Femshep was "The True Shepard" or that Hale was amazing and Meer sucked, really bothered me. Plus I honestly thought Mark Meer did a great job.

If Meer had performed like Hale, perhaps I would have been able to play MaleShep.

But as he was, he was too aggressive and shouty, something I never want, especially from a male character.

I much prefer an even delivery, which Hale provided (as did three of the four voices in DAI).

Depends on the voice actor actually. I've been playing a female character in every game listed under my portrait mostly because i liked their voice (and a femshep made more sense for me anyway, don't ask me why).

Well I suppose if you like monotone delivery.

Which one didn't?

I didn't like the male American voice, but I might be equating it being a big booming voice with aggression, which isn't fair.

The other three I thought were excellent.

I dislike overwrought delivery.

I want to assign emotion to the line myself. A neutral delivery helps with that.

Definitely F. I'm required to play as a dude in enough games when I have the chance I'll go with the Ladies. I might have one M playthrough later on but I've never finished those.

Finally have a PS4 and a copy of Inquisition, now I just have to start from scratch to get to the damn DLC.

BTW this is my canon Inquisitor, Alec Trevelyan. He's a Rogue.

I'll definitely play as female. I'm actually really jealous of people who manage to play as their opposite gender. I've never even been able to get past Eden Prime with male Shepard.

Male.  I've tried playing females before but I feel like the immersion is not 100% full because I know they characters are not talking to me when they refer to me as a woman so for me it doesn't work to play the opposite gender

I'm not arguing with your take on it because how you hear something is personal. But the fairly consistent complaint with Meer on these forums is he didn't put enough emotion into things and hale put more emotion into things. Though they feel he put more emotion into the character in Me2 and 3.

I actually heard a lot of emotion in Meers take. I couldn't stand hales and couldn't get past the presidium with her. I thought there was supposed to be a lot of emotion in her takes I just didn't buy it.

I've never heard that.

Meer was aggressive and loud and entirely without nuance right from the start of the game.  And I wanted Shepard to be calmer and more cerebral.  Hale gave me more cerebral angle.  I'm also less insistent on cerebral characters when playing females.  I like to play against type.

Don't know, I usually alternate for genders in game. If I got it now, I'd be a female.

No offense, but
I don't believe that was my, or others point on why we can/cannot play as the opposite gender.
There are plenty of male AND females (noticed you disregarded that one) who prefer to utilize a character that is their own gender
But if you'd like to color me, or others with your stereotypical paint brush, so be it...

yeah that's what I was thinking of doing if I'm playing a male shep at the time Andromeda comes out I'll likely follow it up with a female protag if I'm playing with a fem shep then it's likely i'll go with a male one first off. I'll be playing both ways though

I like to play both. Though it has changed quite a bit since my younger days. When I was a teenager I almost always played male exclusively, because being a guy I just tried to create myself in the game's as much as possible, and then make decisions accordingly as well. As I've gotten a bit older though, now I tend to lean more towards playing female characters (though I'll still play some males to see the differences and get the full experience). There's a few reasons behind this. The most base of which I suppose is that now I feel like if I'm going to have somebody's backside on my screen for hundreds of hours at a time.....it might as well be a nice, shapely female's behind, but beyond that, I also do tend to often enjoy the voice performances more a lot of the time, and it allows me to more easily detach from playing "myself" and rather just roleplay as any kind of character/personality I imagine at the outset.
