Yah, to echo a lot of comments, it'll come down to who voices the characters and if they do a good job or not. I can usually tell in the first half hour. Or rather, if they connect with me. Meer's voice didn't really connect for me. But I did two play throughs with a male character.
Will you play as M or F?

In the previous Mass Effect's, I thought about playing as a female simply to see the romances, but I do not like the idea of getting done by a dude. Even though it is not me, I still would be the person controlling her. Also, I would have liked to see some girl on girl action. But I would only enjoy it if I was involved.

Have to hear the voice acting first, that the main thing for me but romance options can play a role.
KoTOR- male as i liked Bastila more the kaidan carth (yes the joke would work better the other way around)
DA:O-male as i loved Morrigan.
DA2- both for acting
DA:I- incomplete data.
ME1-female for voice acting (mark meer did a great soldier, a soldier just wasn't the best choice for a lead in my opinion, still he made it work pretty well in ME2 and was really enjoyable in ME3)
ME2-male for Lawson
ME3- both for voice acting and Lawson/Traynor

Again -- I play both. First playthough as myself.

Both!
First will be a gal, though. I usually play as gals for connections, laziness issues, and that I also tend to have an easier time making a female face in creaters that doesn't look like it was attacked by weasels or struck by the God of Bambi eyes.
Though I will note my sexy Chiss agent in SWTOR has sort of warmed me on playing dudes for more than just "It's my fourth runthrough, what can I do different?" He's so pretty.

I don't cross gender roleplay. Feels ... weird.
I only play female.

M for the first playthrough, F making the decisions I didn't make the first time around for the second playthrough. After that it's whatever I feel like.

Well I think age ratings are done for a reason, yes. Given some of the posts in this forum it's clear that a lot of the people who play this game are about 12.
Yo do realize it's entirely possible to be 18+ and still in school right? That's not uncommon actually. You might have dropped out of school after highschool, but a lot of the smarter people among us did college and/or university after highschool and are still in school in their early/mid twenties.

Depends a lot on the voice actor choice.

Female. I don't feel a connection to the character otherwise.
WTF is this SJW sh*t? Just because women want some equal representation? We make up over 50% of the population FFS.

I will probably play as a female first then a male. For the first 3 games I played a renegade femshep and a paragon maleshep. May do the same thing if paragon/renegade choices are still around.

And a lot of the even smarter among us went to Graduate School, or took pre-Law followed be Law School. In those instances, one wouldn't, normally, be out of school until they were 25-27 years old.
Your post is swimming in condescension. I don't know if you intended it that way, but that's how it comes off.
In terms of the thread at hand, I'll play both, as I usually do. I'll start with male though.

My pattern tends to be: two female play throughs, then a male one, where I exhaust some of the options that I would never explore with a female self insert type of character.

if Asari is not available....female.
I always play females first...then i go on to a 5 to 1 female to male on runs.
