I'm one of those guys who identifies male characters as an extention of me, and female characters as separate people that I can roleplay with a much wider variety of personalities, so I usually end up with one guy and a whole range of women. As for which first, dunno. It'll depend on voices, the character creator, what NPC (and thus romance options) are available and so on. Far too early to decide.

(my canon Shep was female for the record)

Playing as male for probably 2-3 playthroughs, then female if I feel like doing it.

I'm guaranteed to play female on my first playthrough, but I'll play male at some point after that. How soon will depend on the character creator, romances and voice. My fifth (and sixth) DAI PT was with a male because I really liked all three options available. With ME, I had at least 12 female PTs before trying a male, because I didn't like his voice or character creator.

the only times I ever played a female character in a bioware game was ME3 and DA:I. Just because I enjoyed the lesbian romance personalities.l

Not sure. I probably decide after romances will be announced.

I eventually play always as both F&M, but my head cannon Shep is female.

Male. I will most likely never play as female because otherwise I just don't feel a connection between me and my character.

Same here. I'm not saying that I can't play as female character (Resident Evil 3, Tomb Raider games and Metroid games are great!), but I just have a bit of a disconnection if I play as female.

Nothing against having a choice of male or female thou, I think more games should do it! :)

I too have a disconnection to my female characters, but that is exactly why I do play them. It lets me play a character that is completely different from me. it lets me do things I can't picture my male characters, who I do consider as "me", doing. Not saying you're worng or anything, it's just interesting how we all take things in our own way :)

Generally play as a male in SP but I gravitated more towards female characters in MP because I really like the asari and fury characters.

My go to is female when given the choice, but I play male from time to time, especially if the VA is exceptional.

I will play female first but if there is again amazing romance for male only I will probably break (DAI with Cassandra and Dorian, damn).

why not both? as an aside... I've never felt any of Biowares characters were particularly feminine... not saying the have to wear pink ribbons, or act like some hollywood starlet in a romcom, but... they're not very feminine.

I agree @mickey111 I think in the trilogy both Mark and Jennifer did a great job voicing Shepard and I liked the way both handled the responsibility. I have to admit though based on what I've heard of the male voices of DAI I think the female voices are far better on that game but not having played a male yet on the game I can't speak for the whole experience though. As most of the male stuff I've seen has been on youtube.

Depends on the voice actors.

If (one of?) the male PC voice actor(s?) is someone whose voice just clicks with me and the male default face is decent / it's relatively painless to make a decent looking male PC (yes yes, I'm shallow), I'm gonna mostly play with a male PC. If (one of?) the female PC voice actor(s?) is someone whose voice just clicks with me, and the female default face is decent / it's relatively painless to make a decent looking female PC (again, shallow), I'm gonna mostly play with a female PC. If the CC / default faces are absolutely horrible, I'll go with the gender whose voice I like best with the condition that his/her face doesn't look too much like it was introduced to too many blunt objects at a young age (my relationship with CC has been somewhat difficult in the past).

If both are kinda meh or I don't have strong feelings about either, I'm gonna play as a female first and as a male later.

If I really don't like / don't click with the(/any?) female/male PC voice actor(s?), I'll just play as the opposite gender for the majority of the time and maybe do one female/male playthrough just for certain romance (or out of obligation).

I'll play as a woman. I don't play video games that don't give me the option as playing as a woman.

Darn it, you found my exception! Which makes me realize that I also make exceptions for Zelda and Legos, and argh! My principles are crumbling, lol!

Okay, I only play RPGs that allow me to play as a woman.

I hope the game is good enough to play it at least twice, so I play both (as I usually do with BW games). First PT may be F or M depending on which voice I like more.

I do greatly prefer games that provide the option, but RPG's are few and far between, so I feel less compelled to be really choosy.

I don't play many games for that reason. I've watched my husband play Assassin's Creed and I've been tempted. But, I really want to play as a woman! I'm so glad they've finally released a new one with a female option. I'm buying it!

Let's see, I also play Skryim and the fallout series. In general, I make an effort to at least try out any game that gives a female option. I like to put my money where my mouth is.

I'll end up playing through as both at some point.

I never really understood the "I'll only buy a game if I can play as X type of character". I mean, if given the choice I'll always pick to have the option but it's not like I would pass up on a game as amazing as The Witcher 3 because I have to play as a grizzled white guy.

I'm not that hardcore: I do play and buy games where you can only play as a guy (Assassin's Creed, Deus Ex), but having a playable female protagonist is a really important point for me when I decide which games I'm going to spend my money on.

Let me start off by saying that personally I HATE just about anything SJW related and the entire state of the world we live in with SJW agendas being pushed in your face at all times. HOWEVER I personally have an affinity for stories with strong female characters.

To me a lot of times they seem more interesting, less cliched' and more emotionally involved. For the longest time I just couldn't get into the Mass Effect series until one day I started up a FemShep character on a whim. I've been hooked ever since.

I just wonder if it will be the same with no Jennifer Hale as the lead in MEA and a different and better VA for the male as well .

I'll probably start up the game as a male just to see what he looks and sounds like but then re-roll a female for my full platythrough.

Which way are you gonna go?

I agree with this completely.

One of the things that appealed to me about Mass Effect was the ability to make a female character.

When I first got the game, my impression was that it would be little more than a third-person HALO wannabe, and so I took the option to make a female character to give it as much distinction from other "space marines vs. aliens" games.

I'll likely play ME:A several times, so I'll wind up trying both. But I might create another female character right off to continue my ME tradition.
