I'll end up playing through as both at some point.

I never really understood the "I'll only buy a game if I can play as X type of character". I mean, if given the choice I'll always pick to have the option but it's not like I would pass up on a game as amazing as The Witcher 3 because I have to play as a grizzled white guy.

Pretty much that.

I never understood why some people only play games because they can play certain genders... who cares as long as the game is great?

Voice acting will be a good decider for me but I lean towards making Female Characters because I find the creation creator to have a lot more customization with the character on the female side and very limited on the male side. Then there is also the fact that most games usually make you play as a male so its nice to be able to play a game with a female lead.

All I can say is that I prefer to play as a female. I feel more immersed in the game if I can play as my gender. More importantly though, I want to support games that actually have a gender option.

Yeah, me too.  Female characters 99% of the time.  I occasional experiment and have fun playing a goofy guy, but I just have to have the 'immersion' factor, so I'll be playing female.

I think guys like me would play our own gender more often if the gender option thing was mainstreamed. But sadly only the most prestige of games have the option.

With Fallout 4 being announced and showing how they dealt with the gender option, I sorta want that neat thing to be in ME4 lol.

As you get older and have less time and energy for video games, you start become really, really choosy about what you want to play. I can go weeks without playing a game just b/c I'm so busy, or I'm tired, or my carpal tunnel is flaring up again. So when I get a chance to play a game, it has to meet a lot of requirements... things I really like in a game, because hey, time's money :)

Fair enough.

Maybe I'm just a bit too much into video games then. My work involves video games, and when I come home I play even more :D

I have played many games as a male PC and I'm going to do that in the future as well. But I prefer to play female PCs. Majority of the games also have a male PC and I can't necessarily choose a female PC so when there is a chance to play as a female PC then I'm more interested in that kind of game because I don't have that chance so often. There are a lot of jrpgs where I could play as female PC but my problem with those games is that usually I don't like the voice actors and the girls are very girly and young in those games. Nothing wrong with that but I would like play as a hero like I can do in ME and DA games because usually if there is a hero in a game then that hero is a man. I'm a woman so I think it's more important to me to play as a woman. I also want to support games where I can play female PCs because that way there is more chances that more games are made for female gamers. I think when I play the game as female PC then I feel that the story is more special than if I would play the same game as a male PC because there are so many stories about male heroes for example that when I play the same story as female it feels different and somehow new.

If the voice acting was good and the narrative doesn't differ much, probably both. I enjoy playing as either gender in Kotor, Swtor, DAO and DA2... but Mass Effect never felt right with Male Shep (and custom Shep has a face like granite). Mostly I didn't really feel he was unique as a person or see him differently than any other masculine badass space marine (there are other alternatives btw unlike female counterpart). At least, I do feel that the narrative was believable with her and she was more realistic whenever she had troubles making everyone to take her Reaper warnings seriously. FemShep doesn't came off like a one-man army like BroShep do. And nobody glance at MaleShep and think he's a stripper cosplaying as a soldier.

With MEA, I'll probably wait for more information on the story and voice acting but if its another space marine protagonist, I'll still choose the female version. Male heroes is always a default in gaming especially with military scifi fiction. Change is good.

It depends on voice actors, gear, and facial hair options.

If the voice actor situation is lopsided like in the original ME trilogy, I'm definitely playing as a female. If  both VA's are relatively unremarkable, like it was the case with DAI, I'll play a female character first and a male character second. If both VA's are unremarkable but males have awesome facial hair options (please, BioWare, make amazing beards happen--and by "amazing beards" I don't mean the plastic chin-helmet abominations from DAI-- I know you can do it)  then I might play male first and female second. If female PC is forced to wear stripper versions of male gear, I'm  playing as a male. Also, If there is a "beer gut" option and it's specific to one gender, I'm automatically going with that gender regardless of everything else.

So, in summary, best VA wins... unless they're voicing a stripper. If both VA's are equal, I'll play both genders and the playing order will be determined by the inclusion or absence of beer gut and luscious beards.

Like others have said, it depends on the voice. Jennifer Hale was so phenomenal I didn't want to play anything else. SWTOR examples: Xanthe Elbrick was so fun in the evil department and then I rolled a more nuanced inquisitor and her less insane lines surprised me. On the other hand, for some reason I can't warm up to Jo Wyatt despite acknowledging her talent. So male imperial agent it was.

Your post is swimming in condescension. I don't know if you intended it that way, but that's how it comes off.

It was intentional.

Well TIM does make you his pet in ME2 and in ME3 you're suddenly taking orders from the alliance at every turn, so there's that. Anyways, feedback over in the feedback forum was that DAI had too much hero-worship and that it should've cut back on the special-ness of the Inquisitor. Afterall you are ordering executions and ordering governments around, can force almost anybody out of the Inquisition, everybody comes to you for advice and are deciding the fates of long-standing groups you really shouldn't have any reason to. ME fans on the flip side seem to think that stuff wasn't enough, oh well.  :?

The reason I feel the castrated the male Inquisitor in DA:I has nothing to do with this though. It's how the Inquisitor is written that made me feel like the Inquisitor is supposed to be played as a female character, not a male character. The dialogue, the way the Inquisitor speaks and behaves and the fact even the most extreme "renegade" dialogue options in DA:I are absolutely innocent in comparison to the renegade/ruthless dialogue options in Mass Effect and Dragon Age 2.

I wanted to play a REAL inquisitor. A cold, ruthless and zealous son-of-a-b*** who would feel right at home in the real-world Spanish Inquisition. Sadly DA:I only allows you to play a calm, reasonable and rather innocent Inquisitor. Because of that I deleted my male Inquisitor and rerolled as a female Inquisitor, which made the game a lot more enjoyable for me.

Fair enough. I do think the game Had less extreme options then past games, Though I don't see how Being calm and reasonable means You re Not a man, or better fits a woman.
Also, DAI Inquisition=/=Spanish Inquisition. They never said the Inquisitiion in Thedas would be like the Spanish one.

I will play as female. I usually create "myself" in games where i can customize the protagonist. :)

No, but I wish it was, or at least we had the option to make the inquisition like that. The inquisition in DA:I is only an inquisition by name. It has nothing to do with what the word "inquisition" means in real life.

Nah, I'd be happy with Hawke-level of ruthlessness, with a bit of Warhammer40k-level of zealousness.
