3 guys dead, not that bad for someone that didn't know a damn what he was doing.

Second try: Tali in vents because I forgot to activate Legion, Garrus led the second squad and also led the crew back to the ship. Samara kept up the biotic barrier and Jack and Tali helped me fight the boss. No casualties, despite Zaieed and Miranda being disloyal.

Fire-team leader: Jacob
tech: Legion
Got to the crew, sent Thane back
Second fire-team: Jacob again, worked once chose to do it again
Shield: Samara. No questions asked who was best for that job
Brought Jacob and Miranda to the final boss
Everyone lived, lost half the crew due to looking for last minute upgrades however.

The only choice for “tunnel rat” is someone who can bypass security obviously so why would I choose anyone other than Tali or Legion maybe Kasumi now also.
The only choice for “pest control” is someone who is a powerful biotic so again your down to only 2 real choices Jack or Samara/Morinth. No one else even came close to their power so why even consider anyone.
Leader of the other group I actually had to think about it for a bit and even still the only real choices I could consider are those who have some sort of leadership ability. Miranda and Garrus and maybe Mordin and Jacob but no one else. I did choose Miranda with Jack in her group just to see if something would happen between them but what a shock nothing…
The escort the crew back to the ship really didn’t matter on who I chose in any play through. Its not like choosing Zaeed is going to affect the “hold the line” segment of the fight.
The only time I lost a squad mate was when the game screwed me out of convincing both Legion and Tali to get along. I had maxed out paragon or extremely close at least at the time. So legion got killed in the final battle against the mega terminator.
Granted if you don’t do the loyalty missions then yea, your outcome will be very different. But honestly having to do loyalty missions to be a primary reason for them to survive is the best they could come up with?

Actually, leaving Zaeed to hold the line could help greatly if you want to take Grunt or Garrus with you to the final fight. Legion might have lived as well if he was left to hold the line.

-I accepted that I was going to loose Legion so I took him with me from beginning to the end on the final so called suicide mission. Then again that’s how I do it anyways. My “team Shepard” stays constant from start to the final shots with the boss.Pacifien wrote...

As long as your team is loyal, it doesn’t matter who is in that final "hold the line" battle. I have used Zaeed, Grunt, Samara and Mordin to do the escort and that battle goes exactly the same with the same results.

Second run, Jacob was the only death, and that was because 1) He'd annoyed me for the last time and 2) He volunteered to be tossed into the vents. Ok big guy, get right to it.

I suspect if you sent Zaeed on escort duty and took Grunt and Garrus with you to the final battle, you'd get a different result.
Wait, I should get out a save and try that. I'll get back to you later.

Just make sure your team is loyal other wise you will probably get someone killed. Mordin for example I understand is a easy one to get killed durring that "on the line" battle.

I had Miranda Bubble me - lost garrus. Samara led team first time. She died. Had Mordin lead second. He died.
Grunt me and Zaeed took down the monster... everyone go out from then on.
Ended up with - Zaeed, Grunt, Miranda, Jacob, Kasumi, and Legion.
I really wish I had killed Jacob instead of Mordin. He had his singing as a redeeming quality.
My actually trying to be perfect, not killing everyone playthrough ended... perfectly.
Was alot less fun.

Right, so loaded up an Insanity playthrough (I don't think difficulty has any effect, though), 12 loyal squadmates. Sent Zaeed back with the crew. Took Garrus and Thane with me to the final battle. I wanted to leave Grunt with the other defenders because I think he has the largest defense score out of the top three, so it gave those left behind the greatest chance at 100% success. Alas, Mordin died.
Tomorrow I'll see who makes it when I send Zaeed with the crew and take both Garrus and Grunt with me.

Interesting results. The difficulty shouldn’t matter either.Pacifien wrote...

-I would have thought that with the others in that big group especially a heavy hitter like Grunt and Miranda leading, that Mordin would have lived.
-Who was group leader? Keep in mind that is the key factor here I’m referring to about success of this spot.

I stuck to Garrus as a group leader this time around. Don't think it factors into the Hold the Line segment.
This morning, sent Zaeed with the crew and took both Garrus and Grunt with me to the final battle. Mordin and Tali died.
You know, I didn't think I'd enjoy runs where I try to get various people killed, but it's oddly fun. I don't get it. It's not like I want Mordin and Tali to die. Going to see how many of the squad I can kill now when the Normandy is fully upgraded and they're all loyal.

Loyalty for everyone.Every ship upgrade.Krogan Shotgun and health upgrades for Grunt .Mordin tech damage increase.Jack biotic damage increase. Widow and shield upgrades for Legion.
Garrus and Legion was my squad for the entire mission.
Let Miranda lead team 1st time.Tali went in vents.
Jacob was team leader and Samara was Biotic specialist.Let Mordin escort crew.
Brought Garrus and Legion with me to final battle with the Terminator. I then blew up the Collector Base and got the hell out. Illusive Man gets pissed. Disconnect.

I had all squad members loyal, all ship upgrades and team upgrades and saved the crew.
Legion went in the vent.
Garrus lead strike both times.
Samara for the ME field.
Grunt escorted crew.
Took Garrus and Morodin with me the first time. Tali Died
Took Garrus and Tali with me the second time Morodin Died.
I think this is complete bull. If your people will die if they are loyal or not then what the hell's the point. I've played through this game 4 times in all different ways. Still cannot get a ending where no one dies.
If your all your squadmates bieng loyal gurantees them all bieng alive than getting that achievement would be too easy, not to mention it takes away any tension the suicide mission may give otherwise.

I really didn’t expect these kind of results with who you leave in the “hold the line” battle. Thanks for giving it few runs to see how it varies from one run to the other. I honestly figured that if everyone was loyal that they would all survive there since there were so many in that group. I heard how the game screws you out of Mordin because of the weird in game computations about him and that is why he is always suggested as your escort guy.
