The only thing I can think of was Spec Ops The Line, but I'm sure there's more out there or some creative examples.

ExistenZ (film)
The whole organic "game console" thing is pretty silly, but the film is badass. And really disgusting, like other Cronenberg films. It came out around the same time as the Matrix (and got overshadowed), but they explored similar themes.

Off the top of my head, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home would be the main example for me. Dr. McCoy sums it up better than I ever could:
McCoy: You're proposing that we go backwards in time, find humpback whales, then bring them foward in time, drop 'em off, and hope to Hell they tell this probe what to do with itself?
Kirk: That's the general idea.
McCoy: Well, that's crazy!

That movie actually won me over to Trek when I was young. Kind of avoided it before.

Jaws. Seriously. A giant shark eating people, and the sheriff needs to fix the problem. Turned out fantastic.
Alien, too, actually.

Katawa Shoujo -- "Romance story about dating crippled girls"
Six-String Samurai -- "Rock n Roll Samurai takes care of kid"
A Boy and His Dog -- "A boy communicates telepathically with his dog as they scavenge for food and sex"
I dunno if they qualify as lame, but I was pleasantly surprised how well they turned out. Based on their descriptions I was expecting cheap forget it in a few days entertainment.

The TV show Dexter. The idea that a serial killer would not only be the lead character but that you would like him and that you would want him to get away without being caught seemed so insane to me. For the first 3 years of the show I refused to watch it no matter how many of my friends suggested it. After years of all the praise from both friends and critics I watched it and loved the show. Michael C. Hall is a really good actor.

I watched it a couple weeks ago. It was kind of kooky, but I enjoyed it.
