Cole is Cold/Hostile the moment I recruited him?

Is this normal? I know there's been plenty of speculation as to whether certain companions start off with approval other than 0, but I've been playing as an empathetic quizzie, so I can't imagine why my previous decisions would have resulted in his disapproval - other than If he disapproves of allying with the Templars but there isn't a notification for it.
Can anyone tell me if this is a bug or not? So far his approval is working fine as I'm finishing up some Hinterlands quests I left undone.

If you side with the templars he disapproves but since he's not officially in the party when you make the decision the game doesn't tell you. It's the same with Dorian.

It's normal. Cole disapproves of recuiting the Templers and conscripting the mages. You'll find Dorian is also cold towards you when you recuit him later on. But the good news is that Cole's approval is easy to make up since he tends to give approval for helping people even when he's not in the party. There's a quest in the Emprise du Leon that gives around five 'Cole Approves'.

That makes no sense. When you decide what to do with the Templars, he's not recruited yet, so he has no approval change. He Greatly Approves when you let him stay back at Haven, but unless after you let him join you started to do things he didn't like, he should not be hostile.

I think Dorian and Cole's approval work differently since they're not in the party for the first key choice of the game.
He's also presant when you chose to recuit or disband the Templers, so it does affect his view of the Inquisitor.

Yes but he's never hostile when he joins me, and I always ally with the Templars. His first Greatly Approves bumps him up to a decent grey area to work with. Is it possible after he joins, he's able to find out what you've been doing and if it's not all goody goody, he gets upset?

It may depend on how many sidequests have been done. I've never really looked into the mechanics of how approval in DAI works but it's possible that the sidequests that would lead to Cole's approval in the Hinterlands have the disapproval of allying with the Templers subtracted? I guess the only way to check would be to do Champions of the Just without doing any sidequests and seeing how Cole's approval compares to doing having done sidequests.

I think you might be right. I always clear out the Hinterlands (avoiding the forest until In Your Heart Shall Burn) before I do Champions of the Just. I also know that even after Cole is recruited, you don't have to take him on any quest for approval. He will always approve of good deeds even if you leave him behind.

So you're thinking that he approves and disapproves from the start of the game even well before he enters the party, and the game simply doesn't tell you? So he could be entering the party with 40 approval, for example? Do you think the same would be true for Dorian?

I'm not sure. I always had decent approval from him too when he joined, both when I allied and conscripted the mages to see what would happen. I noticed Cole seems to know everything because he's a spirit and can sense stuff, but with Dorian, I'm not sure exactly what I would have to do to upset him. He even seemed unhappy when I allied with the mages, worrying I would encourage them to act like Tevinter Mages, but he never disapproved. Just warned me to be careful.

I had Dorian acting a bit mean on this playthrough where I went to the templars first and conscripted them. I asked why he really wanted to join when I first reached Skyhold and he officially entered the party for the first time, and he raised his voice and started going on about how he thinks I'm like a dragon that simply knocks aside anything in my way. It didn't seem like a "high approval" kind of conversation. But this was a playthrough where I met him in the Chantry and went to the templars after that, so he might have disapproved of me going for the templars instead of helping him to deal with his old mentor.

That confirms it then. Cole and Dorian know what you've been up to before they joined, and will judge you for it. Unlike Cole who you can gain approval from easily by helping people, to get Dorian's approval, you'll have to take him on quests related to killing the Venatori. And yes if you abandoned him in the Chantry and side with the Mages, he's not a happy man when he comes to Haven. Lol

Indeed, Cole's approval is retroactive. I don't know about Dorian's though.
Here's what you can read in the Prima guide:

Spoiler
Seeing as we don't see the approval, it means it's noted but doesn't show for some reason, same with Alistair in Ostagar. His approval doesn't show after you first talk to him, but when I used the dialogue restoration mod, it showed up.

He'll come around to full approval by the end of the game, because he really does forgive everything eventually, and always remembers the good. I had the same thing happen and it worked out fine.

There are plenty of places to increase his approval. Hinterland was big and so was saving the slaves in Emprise Du Lion. That was approval (5) for seven groups.

I actually don't remember him being that hostile to me when I allied with the templars. So helping people in the Hinterlands even before you meet him changes his reaction to you?

I conscripted the Mages, and chose to let Cole knife the poor dying sod (just to see that dialog)- then as soon as I talked to him, he gave me his "I don't like what we're doing here, if you don't stop, I'm leaving" dialog immediately. I hadn't done many Hitherlands quests (rushed to Skyhold)... so yeah, your conscript/ally choice definitely influences him.
Likewise, conscripting the mages gets a somewhat bitter remark from Dorian, although I didn't seem to go as far down as I did with Cole. If you do go see Dorian in the Chantry then go to the Templars, though, he also gets bitter... though it's hard to blame him there.

I never would have thought that your efforts before meeting him could affect his feelings. I always ally with the Templars and one time I conscripted the Mages, and he still liked me. It really does seem to matter if you do good deeds before he joins. Dorian too.
