I've appreciated everyone's advice and help throughout my DA:O and DA II journey!
If anyone's still interested: after playing very slowly (like 10 minutes a day sometimes) for months due to work, I have finally come to the final quest in Dragon Age II. After this, I intend to play Legacy, and maybe Mark of the Assassin (thoughts?). Also, I skipped DA:O's Awakening originally, might go back and play that too? Not sure-- welcome to more thoughts about that, too! After completing all of those-- (which hopefully won't take me as long as DA II did), I finally plan to upload/create my Dragon Age Keep according to this story, and then re-play Inquisition (for like the 3rd time).
Dragon Age II thoughts (!!!):
- I totally understand, how, as a follow-up to Origins, this game could have been disappointing and frustrating to people. Knowing what to expect going in, however (smaller world, can only play as human, etc.), I was not at all disappointed, and loved it. And yes, sarcastic Hawke is such a winner (for the record: I went diplomatic mostly, though often sarcastic, and in moments of tension, sometimes anger).
- I thought the romances were a bit weaker than DA:O, but the combat was significantly better (for me, at least-- maybe I'm too used to Inquisition's graphics & combat).
- Hated Fenris at first (dude, chill out with the mage-hate, Bethany & Merrill are right there), but enjoyed his companion quests a lot, and love his banters with Isabela. You can also sympathize with his mage-hatred, given his background.
- One of my favorite Hawke lines: In response to Demon in Dark Roads-- "We're visitors here too! But I doubt we come from the same place." I laughed aloud. Also fond of, "I'm surprised you know what a note is, let alone how to read one."
- The Templar and Mage stuff is hard-- like, I have no doubts I'm going to side with the Mages, but still, Anders bro. NOT CHILL BRO. But, you're essentially talking about willfully slaughtering innocents and every mage in Kirkwall. Which is just nuts. One of Meredith's justifications is absurd, too-- "the people will demand blood and retribution." Well...that's great...the people often demand lots of (stupid) things, but that doesn't mean they are moral or ethically sound things. However, I also didn't find Meredith to be an entirely unsympathetic character. I also thought the voice actress who played her was marvelous.
- You think I didn't recognize Miranda Raison (Cassie! Cass!) playing Fenris' sister??!? OH I DID.
- I don't have a huge problem executing Anders-- it seems like (to me, personal opinion) the only thing you can do (given the other options-- personally I think imprisonment would be ideal), if you're playing a Hawke who doesn't support a full-fledged and bloody mage revolution-- but I don't like the manner in which he/she (Hawke) does it. Stabbing him in the back, quite literally? Not down. I wish there was an option to behead him, or, better yet, to have him put to death via the justice system/courts, etc. I agree that he should be punished for his crimes, but imprisonment is an option as well, too. Not sure what to do going forward with that. I, for instance, was open to letting Loghain go at the Landsmeet (though, honestly, given his crimes, its hard to do so), but since Alistair threw a hissy fit, and I didn't wanna lose him as a companion, I executed Loghain. However, the manner by which the Warden dispatches with Loghain was quick, swift, admirable. Stabbing Anders in the back is rough. But letting him go feels like a ) nepotism or b ) perhaps worse for my Hawke-- condoning his actions. FYI, for many things, I'm referring to how my RP Hawke sees things (which, does coincide with my personal feelings often, but not always). I like Anders a lot as a character, though-- whiny, yes, but tragic, too.
- Was less than thrilled that Isabela still tries to sleep with Zevran when she and my Hawke are dating (fully romanced), but I got around that by just not bringing her on the quest. That just didn't seem to make sense, given her final Questioning Beliefs mission. I understand that she enjoys sleeping around a lot (note: I really dislike it when people shame her for her behavior (patriarchy!)-- but its a complicated topic), but it seemed out-of-character given what she had just admitted to my Hawke, and what they shared.
- Loved Leliana's appearance in the game. This was my favorite appearance of a DAO character. Loved it.
- Arishok was a great rival/"enemy" in the game. I respected his dedication to principles and justice (and my Hawke did, as well), even if I didn't agree with his methods or philosophy.
- On that note, I actually think this is one area where DAO and DA II might "outshine" Inquisition-- Corypheus is a fairly one-dimensional villain (I'm open to other arguments though!), whereas Loghain, Arishok, Meredith/Orsino, and others, are not one-dimensional. I dug this. One could point out that the people who support Corypheus on the other hand (Samson, Calpernia, Fiona or the Templar Leader (forgot his name)) are not one-dimensional, and that's a good point.
I have more, but don't wanna make too long a post. Cheers all!
