Could CGI replace live models for photography, or even acting and stuff?

I'm picturing a software package where you could input the models stats as you want them, a range of clothes and locations and do virtual shoots indistinguishable from attending a shoot in person.

Just to expand on this..

I input the following..

Model 5"9 brunette
athletic build, longish arms and legs <adjusts these to suit>
location Paris around mid day.
<inputs selection of clothes>
<starts virtual poses>
<takes photos>

 

Could this be done one day easily or would something like this need a lot of work to produce a package that everyone could use with a minimal learning curve?

Wouldn't be as organic. Animation is still difficult in terms of fluidity.

I know but it's nowhere near something that could replace the use of live models on photo shoots. That's the kind of application I was thinking of.  Something with dynamic lighting and control over every part of the environment.  But that could be used to do shoots instead of hiring a model.

CGI has already replaced models, I think. Pics of models these days are almost always manipulated in a ton of ways.

Yes but that is Photoshop.  That's manipulation of an image already taken with a camera. Not an image totally generated in a digital format from start to finish.  I've never used that at all ..  I believe what you photograph should be what you show to people.

For still photos, MAYBE. You'd need insanely good tools and lots of time to produce photo realism for even one picture, nothing that would be cost effective over hiring a pretty face and a camera man for an hour photo shoot.

For movement/animation/video... no. We're not there (or anywhere close to there). The best CGI animation is based off of tons of motion capture to simulate each motion and contour during even pedestrian movements. We aren't at a point where motion capture is even an easy technology, so replacing it entirely isn't on the horizon anytime soon, I don't think.

And that was done with extensive motion capture and live modeling (obviously of The Rock).

BTW I did try a program along these lines called Poser but it had a rather nice learning curve which I did not have the patience to do. But it kind of was along the lines of what I described if primitive.

Possibly, but if faking photos gets easy then there will be backlash and it'll be popular to make photos be as authentically real as possible.

Well, it's not just a matter of processing power, but also having a sufficiently diverse and deep library of assets to draw from. We have decades of experience to know what someone means when they say "5'4" brunette female" but a computer could produce a picture of an insanely tall brown dog and be accurate within that description.

The question is not the doing, but rather the translation of the request to the finished product. That's the largest hurdle, not the actual rendering. A computer could create the pixels for a photo realistic picture as easily as it generates a real photo... the issue is it has no way of knowing that's what the request is.

This is how animation works. 2D animation is literally just a sequence of images one after the other. Seems easy enough. 3d animation? That is quite different, it is a transformation of points or attributes in a period of time. The secret of animation is all in the calculation of this matrix. Let us not forget the lighting and shadow element of it. Wait, is that more calculations of that matrix from a light, reflex and shadow perspective? Don't forget color interpolation. Amazing how these primitive objects manage to form something. Also this lighting is not as strong, let's switch to ray tracing which takes 3 times to process.

Basically animation is a convoluted mess and by the time it reaches anywhere close to near fluidity, movies and the techbology behind will be at such a stage that it wouldn't be worth it. At all.

I also feel like the way Disney focuses exclusively on these hyper deformed CGs now is a step back from traditional animation.

I've thought about this a few times and your comment got me to think of this video https://www.youtube....h?v=BEWAmfwC-XY. It isn't photo realistic of course but the neat thing is that was being rendered in time. Just by three very expensive graphics cards.

 

Personally I do believe we're approaching a time in which CGI will obtain photo realism. A time I'm very eager for so game makers can stop focusing on graphics and put more energy into story and game play. By energy I mean money and approaching I'm hoping within the next ten years. I imagine we've already reached a point where we can expect to see a lot of resources sharing. For example using the same buildings in a variety of games rather than remaking effectively the same building for both games.

It seems that the traditional animation needs more handjob and the CG Animation needs more mousejob. Both of them have their own kind of difficulties.
