Is there an instance in building an MP kit that you'd say it's more worthwhile to cover a weakness rather than play to it's strength?

If I understood the question, you would be reading the answer to it this very second as opposed to what you are reading right now.

Trying new things helps extend replay, if that helps.

Not really, generally you build to emphasize strengths of a kit and then you use a weapon to bridge the gap. If a kit has armor damage buff armor damage to the max, if it suck versus shields then throw on a acolyte or Talon etc to take care of those, you can use disruptor also if you have a spammable. If you have a kit that sucks versus armor then using rounds like drill or AP will give you more weapons DPS versus those defenses and more double hits as well. There really should be nothing that a kit is weak against though, have a plan for every enemy type.

I use equipment to cover up weaknesses in some cases, but shoring up strengths is easier

With the actual build I can´t think of anything atm. Regarding equipment, first thing that comes to my mind is the Warlord - I usually use AM3 to make up for his inability to vault over cover as I like to get around the map quickly. Power amp may be nice to make his hammer even stronger, but I prefer to make up for his clunkiness by making him run faster.

I suppose it depends. My earlier builds tended to cover weaknesses more, until I developed stronger all-around abilities. As I learned how to survive without needing as many "get out of jail free" tricks, I could continue to bolster strengths, which is ultimately more effective because of increased damage output.

But I still have a few things built, or loudouts arranged, for covering weaknesses. I use a Paladin on the Shadow, which is specifically for long-range offense that doesn't require me to cross the map. I could use an Acolyte, or other close-range option, but the ability to shoot enemies accurately from long distances is one that I feel I really need, or my Shadow is forced into counter-productive situations.

I don't fire the Paladin all that often, with my playstyle, but it's there for when I need it, which is regularly throughout any given game.

Focus on what the kit does well and shoot everything else in the face. Things work out well if you follow this basic philosophy.

I always try to cover the weaknesses. Preferably with spawn nuking.

Mine's a little different. Certain hacks with certain pugs situation;

Me - "Guys, we need to melt those double banshee's with awesome dps."

Pugs - "Pew, pew."

Me - "Or I call upon the powers of Armoured Compartments."

Should have reload cancelled that Widow and saved the rockets for wave 11.

You talk as if I always have Widow dps. Or always play infil-traitors.

Good point, pig. Blow the mother fucker out anything not dead by the basic shoot em in the face philosophy. I didn't want to discuss advanced gaming tactics but since you brought it up.

Patch it up with Medi-Gel. Weakness solved. Unfortunately, quarians get sick. Better scoot back before they weaken you.

You mean like, don't bring an Acolyte/Scorpion as sidearm in case Phantoms? Or don't bring piercing in case of Evil Guardians or dmg soak Atlases? Or don't bring Geth Scanner in case Ceberus smoke? ... I still prefer my backup of not preparing for Ceberus and just complaining about it on BSN instead.

Plenty of good builds cover weaknesses instead of playing to strengths.  For example, I always put an Adrenaline Mod on the Juggernaut or any Krogan I'm using (other than my instant-shield recharge Shaman) to cover their mobility weaknesses.  I also often put an Adrenaline Mod on Batarians, partially because they don't have a dodge, and also partially because I love the look on stupid Drells' faces when I speed by them and get to the ammo box first (assuming they don't have Adrenaline mods, of course).

As another example, I like to use the Paladin on the Phoenix Adept, because he already does enough damage up close, and I like having a gun that can do some ranged damage.

Yes. Especially AdrenMod3. It's like playing two totally different kits when the Jug has it or not. But I guess you can say that about any other kit too.

I do this sometimes when I'm playing with volus kits after trying out decent fitness + fast shield regen build, I ended up personally doing better without any fitness and going for complete offence.

The best way to cover a weakness is to kill faster.

Or adrenaline mods.  Can't kill what you can't catch.

(Not applicable for butt lazors and Prime pew pews)

Prime pew pews can be side stepped with AdrenMod3s.
