Bioware mostly just follow whatever trends happen to be the most popular... and the most popular theme right now is tragedy... see game of thrones and Wither trilogy and you'll understand what I mean. Also star wars is coming out... those movies tend to end badly as often as not.

Tragedy has always been an 'in' theme for story writing.

There might be optional bad endings if you make enough bad choices, but forced tragedy not something I would expect for ME:A. In any long-running franchise, each installment is almost always a reaction (often an overreaction) to the perceived flaws of the previous entry. People derided Superman Returns as "Superman Lifts Things," so Man of Steel was non-stop action and chaos. Moonraker, the most over-the-top ridiculous Bond movie ever made, was followed up by For Your Eyes Only, one of the most low-key Bond films in the entire catalogue. Examples like this could be multiplied all day.

Mass Effect will most likely follow this pattern, and given the backlash Bioware received over the comparatively dark ME3 ending, it's more probable than not that the developers will over-correct in the opposite direction. Whether or not this is a good or bad thing I'll leave for everyone else to decide, as I definitely do not want to get into a debate over the merits of the ME3 ending.

Yes.

Not only does the villain win he also sleeps with your romance.

And he's "better."

Depends if they let you choose the tragedy. Do you sacrifice a world to save your love interest or sacrifice your love interest to save a world...

'Bad endings' as in 'badly executed endings, xyz-wise' or 'endings that end the pc's/world's existence along with the story'? Not the same thing, doesn't matter how often these two are conflated.
Yet I also expect this thread to end badly. What is true for BW is true for their official forum.

                                                                             <<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>

I see two possibilites.

One

This is a stand alone game with Bio trying something new. The new is :

1. Showing off the FB3 engine with current graphics hardware.  Also, remember that the PC high-end graphics hardware outshines the PS4. So, I'm also expecting the PC version to take advantage of that fact.

2. Story wise, I anticipate the typical three ACT story arc... intro, conflicts and resolution... the end

3. A SP and MP cross-over game play not for the sake "can we do it?" but as a necessity to get some form of superiority over the enemy.

Two

ME:A is designed from the get go to be another trilogy. Same as above but the resolution is just a temporary reprieve.

As to "bad endings", I hope the designers will include loss of some squad mates due to

1. Unforseen event(s)

2. A hard choice

3. Stupid selfish choice.

or

4. Loss of an important  human controlled sector that will make human survival that much harder in ME:A 2

Unfortunatly, I fear that the core design is already cast in stone and I hope the minor plots can be tweaked to include some of our ideas.

Yup, it seems almost a crime to have happy endings in stories these days.

I think ME:A is Mass Effect again. Any second trilogy will depends upon sales figures. If this IP is still a licence to print money we'll see more games and probably more merchandising.

After ME 3, I would be seriously surprised if BioWare killed off a protagonist or had any kind of supposedly 'bad' ending anytime in the reasonable future.

Unfortunately, given what I've heard from the writers and seen in DA:I, it's likely being done for all the wrong reasons.

Because they are scared of angering the fanbase?

I'll give you Game of Thrones, but my Witcher 3 ending was pretty darn happy.

Yeah but who wants all endings to be tragic all the time?

A tragic ending is not a great ending just because it's tragic in and of itself. A movie can end tragically and still be a big POS, just as a movie can have a great ending and still end on a high note.

Because things in real life are tragic enough already, so it's nice to have happy, uplifting endings once in a while.

Can I just point out that tragedies have existed since the days of the ancient Greeks? It's not some new flavor of the month or trend, and neither G.R.R.M. nor the Witcher series invented tragedy (or made it trendy for that matter).

*waves to Shakespeare who was well known for writing tragedies way before G.R.R.M. was ever born*

Considering that we may be in Andromeda for a couple of games (who knows what the writers have planned), anything is actually possible - happy endings, tense cliffhangers (if this is the beginning of a new trilogy), deaths, tragedy, humor. I guess we'll see when the game is out.

DA:I's ending was too rushed, neat and tidy and the main villain leaves absolutely no lasting impression. It's like ME3's ending scared them so much they went as happy and bare-bones as possible. It also left on a yet-to-be-resolved sequel or DLC bait cliffhanger which I haaaate.

I love Witcher 3's endings though. One is happy, one is bittersweet, and one is tragic, but it's all left up to the player for which one of the 3 endings belong under which category.

I'm curious if this will be a new trilogy, or a one-off. If it's a one-off and they fulfill their claim of it being a more personal story amongst your crew, a sad ending that leaves hope for the future of the MWG races could be the best possible thing. Sacrifice the few for the many, but this time your character and his crew are the ones being sacrificed, not side character NPCs. We just need an actual conclusion. Not one that sequel baits, nor one that tries to be too smart for its own good.

ME1 and ME2 had great endings in my opinion. They can either be amazingly triumphant and hopeful, or depressing as the final battles required a heavy cost. You were rewarded for your actions regardless, and felt like you accomplished the impossible, while still feeling like there are troubles and adventures ahead. ME3 didn't do that for me, and Inquisition left me feeling like part of the game was stripped away.

I don't really see this being the last Mass Effect ever made, and I also don't see Mass Effect going the way of Dragon Age.  So in other words, I see a direct sequel if not trilogy.  And ending the first episode in a tragedy, just doesn't make any sense.  But then again you and I have completely different definitions of the word.  I don't recall a Star Wars movie with a bad ending, Witcher 3 had one bad ending, made that way by being a selfish dick, and Game of Thrones, the only tragedy there is the bad writing of the TV show.

Naw, BioWare tried the tragic hero ending with Shep...I'm thinking by the fan response they will never try that again.

After a few hundred hours of play and three games, people got a bit attached to their Shep.

Ambitious ending possible.

Tragic hero.

Nope.

I don't think TW3 had bad endings. The endings actually had some variance depending on choices.
