I'll give you Game of Thrones, but my Witcher 3 ending was pretty darn happy.

Spoiler

2 out of 3 endings in TW3 were tragic to some degree. Only that stupid Witcher Ciri ending was happy, which was the worst ending in my opinion.

Empress Ciri ending is my favorite. Geralt's suicide ending was the best in terms of drama and tragedy though. I could really feel Geralt's pain during that one.

Tragedies are great endings. Why do you like hollywood happy ending BS so much? Life is tragic.

This.

Of course it all depends on the story being told. The ending has to fit with everything that came before it. While I didn't care for the execution of Mass Effect 3's endings, particularly before the Extended Cut, I think a bittersweet ending would have the only appropriate tone for the finale. A happy ending where there were no personal losses or sacrifices among the Normandy crew would have been out of sync with a story set during a conflict which had likely claimed billions of lives.

Happy endings and tragic endings are good as long as they are well written and make scene in the context of the story. The more important question should be how well written the ending is?

Bioware mostly just follow whatever trends happen to be the most popular... and the most popular theme right now is tragedy... see game of thrones and Wither trilogy and you'll understand what I mean. Also star wars is coming out... those movies tend to end badly as often as not.

The Witcher? What? My TW3 ending was pretty much 100% 'happily ever after.'

There is a miserable ending too, mind you, and a bittersweet one...but still.

Sounds like someone wasn't playing it right then.

Seeing as you get the good endings by not being a horrible dad...no. I'm quite content with how I was playing it.

I am a fan of tragic endings if it fits within the general mood and theme. However...

In the best case scenario, if ME:A will not be part of a new trilogy, we can get multiple good and bad, or even neutral endings with preferably a lot variation. This would make everyone happy (one can hope, right?). It would be great if some things would already depend on early choices we make, would make for a better impact imo as no-one can go back and change it easily B)

Tragedy if done well is okay in my opinion. I did find ME3's ending quite tragic, but I don't think it was done well at all ^^; If there is tragic ending I'd like to be sad and shocked in the end, not frustrated ^^;

Though I think I still prefer happy endings over tragic ones so I wouldn't say no for happy ending either.

I don't think TW3 had bad endings. The endings actually had some variance depending on choices.

Shame those choices bore no relationship to the plot and there is no rhyme or reason to explain the ending you receive... You might as well pick your ending out of a magic hat.

. Except for the part where it totally is based on a line if reasoning, giving Ciri room to grow and make her own path not Geralt riding in to try and save her all the time.

Got to love how even Mass Effect discussions are now becoming W3 discussions

ME3's ending wasn't dark. It was stupid. Up until anderson's scene and you bleeding out, has anyone been against the game ending right there (followed by a victory epilogue)?

Seriously during the entire original ending hooha, BSN was full of posts saying that they did not mind Shepard dying while posts by those wanted a rainbow and unicorns ending were few. Mordin's common ending was referenced positively as well.

As long as they actually make the endings less of a moronic "i'm going to ignore everything you did and give you three colors or maybe two", i doubt the fans will be complaining about having fan faves die in the story's end

Yeah, The Witcher isn't really a tragedy. Assassin's Creed, now that is a series full of tragedy. I love it, every entry in AC is a tragedy that makes Oedipus look like Mr. Rogers. Great tragedy is a rarity and should be treasured.

TW3 had great endings that weren't random. They even have Ciri doing a flashback on some choices that greatly effect her ending in the final scenes. You choose your relationship and are able to screw it up causing you to be alone. Also your choices greatly effect the rulers.

And all the choices are made over the course of the game not just the final scene. As opposed to ME3, which no matter how you got to the end you were left with 3/4 terrible endings that are decided end game only.

Well, yeah, people said that ... but every time someone posted a rewrite of the ending, it was always happier.

Ignore everything you did? You mean the way DA:O did? Or ME1? Or KotOR?

I doubt the ending will be "bad", because this is just the first part of the trilogy most likely.

Were it up to me, I'd have just ended ME3 with Shepard smashing down on the console to fire the Crucible. Though I'd probably also cut the being trolled by Harbinger part of the beam run and find another way to get Shepard fatally injured.

I would hate a tragic Ending.

Why would I hate a tragic Ending?

Because there are so many tragic Endings nowadays. Fiction has become increasingly dark and tragic over the past few Years, doubtlessly in Parts thanks to the massive Popularity of darker Stories (like, to cite a very well done Example, the dark Knight OR to cite an overdone Example, Game of Thrones). It seems, that Darkness, Cynicism and Tragedy is increasingly interpreted as "realistic", which paints a rather grim Picture of how many People perceive Reality. Because, Reality is at least nuanced and has just as much bright Spots as there are dark Spots, just as much Things that inspire Idealism as there are Catalists for Cynicism. And at this Point, coming off a Season of Game of Thrones where their need for Darkness made their Storytelling atrocious, I'm absolutely fed up with Tragedy, Cynicism and Darkness, be they forced or not.

I liked DA:I's in any Way unambigously happy Ending. That's because I like happy Endings and am able to acknowledge that even in Reality, sometimes the good Guys really do win unambigously. In the most violent War of History, the good Guys won unambigously and there was no Doubt about who were the good Guys.

And I want at least the Possibility for an unambigously good Ending in any Game I play. I don't care if you make me work hard for it, make it difficult to attain, that's okay. But give me an Ending, where I feel good. Where I feel happy. Because that's why I experience a Story. I don't do that because I want to get "The World is a bad Place" shoved in my Face.

Tragedy has always been an 'in' theme for story writing.

No, it's a completely new invention.

                                                                                                 <<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>

You know, a good ending would imply a single game... non trilogy.

Now, the Mass Effect IP has many stories and places to it.  If MEA is a single story, then I expect Bio to create other ME single games as well. But, will they be as interesting as a trilogy? Will we, as players, allow ourselves to be emotionally involved with the PC?... followed by another different PC in the next game? I mean, what is so damn appealing about the Mass Effect universe?... Shepard's story of course.

I lean towards Bio going to another trilogy. This means that the ending will be a reprieve for the humans.. giving us time to catch our breath and onwards to the next game in the series.

I would count the Mass Effect 1 Paragon Ending as a good Ending.
